The Movies of Tim Burton: Which Are His Best?

The Movies of Tim Burton: Which Are His Best?
Podcaster, movie critic and friend of Jagbags Morgan Gire comes back to talk the films of the eccentric Tim Burton. Which films are his very best? Which ones are most overrated? Underrated? Is Planet of the Apes in fact his worst film, or is another movie more deserving of the title? We talk all this, plus we compare him to other directors and talk about the diverse array of A-list stars that have appeared in his movies over the years. Put some Jagbags in your ear!

Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes

Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes

Tim Burton is an interesting choice to direct for a Planet of the Apes film. What might be interesting in theory doesn't hold up much in practice. The Visitors are at a real loss to say anything complimentary regarding this entry in the series. The plot is missing. The characters are plentiful but dull. There's money on screen in the production design, but to no real end. Should you watch this film yourself to experience it? Listen to this episode and find out! Spoiler: The answer is 'no'. Download now!

    Sleepy Hollow (1999)

    Sleepy Hollow (1999)
In this week's episode things get a little bit spooky as we take a look at Tim Burton's darkest entry into his filmography to date. 1999's Sleepy Hollow is an ode to Burton's Disney animation roots and is a fascinatingly dark film with performances from Johnny Depp, Christina Ricci and Helena Bonham Carter that show how dark Burton can go without losing the whimsy we've come to love. Together we chat the film, it's journey to screen and so much more.

    219. Alice in Wonderland (2010)

    219. Alice in Wonderland (2010)

Diane and Sean discuss the 2010 Tim Burton version of the children's classic, Alice in Wonderland. Episode music is, "Alice's Theme" by Danny Elfman from the OST.

The Truth About MAF’s Most ‘Problematic’ Man

The Truth About MAF’s Most ‘Problematic’ Man

    On the show today…

Former The Crown star Helena Bonham Carter said in a recent interview that the Netflix series should end now as its no longer a historical drama. But we have a very different opinion.

And we’re in the thick of the new Married At First Sight season, with the unfortunate couples now in the honeymoon phase of the so-called experiment. But this year there’s one lie about the series we need to stop telling ourselves, and while we’re at it, let’s delve into what we really mean when we call men ‘problematic’.

Plus, it's Weekend Watch time! This week we have two movies to recommend to you, a classic Australian story and a new horror film that might actually be a bit of an anti-recommendation.

Helena Bonham Carter, Amber Heard And An Upsetting Interview

    On the show today….

Netflix has released some interesting news about their new Jenna Ortega-led series Wednesday. News that is sure to upset fans of the hit show Stranger Things.

Plus, Hollywood’s awards season has swung into action this week with The Gotham Awards taking place in New York this week. A slew of A-list celebrities attend the prestigious film awards, but it was Adam Sandler’s now-viral acceptance speech that has divided viewers (and The Spill team).

And in a new interview with the Sunday Times, Helena Bonham Carter has made some disturbing claims about Johhny Depp and Amber Heard, along with calling out her younger Harry Potter co-stars. But are her words just an honest insight into how the old guard of Hollywood really talks or alluding to something more sinister?

Episode 317: "Big Fish" Little Lies

Episode 317: "Big Fish" Little Lies

"Big Fish" is 100% a movie that makes us cry every single time. Are we gluttons for emotional punishment? Maybe. But the movie is so good! It's a great story that uses the fantastical to help people come to terms with their history and deal with loss. And it was made into a Broadway musical, which we're still mad about not seeing. We pair it with a Cabernet Sauvignon from True Myth.

    Metacritic Score: 58/100

Movie Sync Notes: We stream "Big Fish" Netflix. We start "Big Fish" 10:07 into the pod and push play on part two 1:19:00 into the pod.

    Fight Club

    Fight Club

On a long enough timeline, Mark's understanding of Fight Club rises above zero as he tries to figure out why Tyler Durden is so iconic, how the film makes a different argument to its screenplay, and if it really is a romcom with added blunt force trauma.
