In the beginning of 2021 a company, Desktop Metal acquired EnvisionTec, a company credited with the development of Digital Light Projection (DLP) 3D printing and  almost 20 years of  research, development, and experience bringing both 3D printers and resins to market in the Additive Manufacturing industry.   Through this acquisition Desktop Health was born. 

I was excited to be able to catch up with Michael Jafar, President and CEO of the newly formed Desktop Health to discuss the direction of this new company and the waves they are making in the dental industry.  Michael and Desktop Health are focused on changing how 3D printing works in dentistry.  Taking 3D printing from a behind the scenes technology printing support materials such as models and trays to manufacturing end use products starting with removable dentures made possible by Flexcera.  Desktop Health is also making news when it acquired its first fully functioning dental lab.  A decision Desktop Health is confident will help increase the speed of innovation, adaptation and level of ​satisfaction for dentist, lab and patient.

I think 3D printing is simply cool.  It has taken all of my adult 'responsibility' to resist buying a 3D printer to satisfy my personal curiosity.  I am secretly waiting for the day that my son is old enough so that I can use him as the excuse to buy one. 

I think 3D printing has the opportunity to make an impact in any industry that deals in physical products.  Be that manufacturing, prototyping, medical, dental and others.

The types of printers and the materials they print are advancing and it was fun to talk to Kevin Dillon the Channel Success Manager at Desktop Health about the advancements they are making in their company and the industry.  I think this disruptive technology is going to push the dental industry in a similar way that CAD/CAM has.  Dental clinics and Labs will have to consider the traditional ways of manufacturing dentures, aligners, implant guides and even final single unit restoration and compare that to the advancing technology of 3D printing.   I would not be surprised if 3D printing makes a faster and larger impact on dentistry than CAD/CAM as more types of treatment can take advantage of the technology.

For as long as I have worked in the Dental Industry the running light hearted joke has been that dentists walk into a bank and say they want to build or buy a dental practice and they have walked out with a blank check.  Rob Wild of TD bank is the guy writing those blank checks.  I wanted to talk with Rob to see how Covid has changed lending practices for dentists?  Do banks still look a the dental industry as a recession proof investment.  I also wanted him to answer the question: is a bank, a bank a bank? and how does he address the commoditization of the banking industry.

I always enjoy connecting with Kevin Wong.  He is a good friend and someone I look too for advice when needed.  At this time where we all hope that we are moving forward and leaving the last 18 months in our rear-view mirrors I wanted to connect with Kevin to discuss his take on what may or what could lie ahead for us.  Kevin owns and operates EvolveOne Media a full service digital marketing agency.

Andy Thiessen used to ref NHL games, now he sells the Solea All-Tissue laser.  Today we discussed how he sees the game of hockey change during the playoffs and how the Solea laser could impact dentistry.

I enjoyed the conversation and I think we touched on some important topics.  It is always hard to pick what new technologies are going to take off and which will linger.  I know Hard Tissue lasers have not become as accepted as anticipated but the Solea laser is based on different technology and different science.  I think this is promising technology as we are already seeing offices having success with the laser.  I think this was a fair and honest conversation.  I wanted to discuss the potential of this technology but did not the entire episode to be a sales pitch.  I did my best to ask some hard questions and keep Andy on his toes.

Vickie Burgess has in interesting story arch that landed her in the banking industry.  Her journey is not that of financial schooling and institutions that would naturally lead to banking.  Rather she came from the wold of Social Work where she spent eight years working with high-risk youth offenders in Toronto.  Now this start may seem to have little crossover into banking but Vickey shows that this added perspective does prove useful when working with clients as they work to build the financial plan.

I really enjoyed catching up with Dr. Mark Tholen as we discussed a range of topics surrounding the continuing evolution of the dental operator and dental office.   I have known Mark for years as I was fortunate to attend his design seminars when he was partnered with Pelton & Crain and now A-DEC.  These seminars were always educational, entertaining and the setting of Portland OR was always fun to explore.   

I look forward when we are able to travel back to Portland with clients and listen to Mark speak on dental office design and converse over a nice glass of wine.

Ted Gray of SciCan spends much of his time visiting offices observing their Infection Control protocols and education the doctor and team on ways to improve their systems.  He has seen the best of offices and he has seen the worst of offices.

I met Mike Clark in 2019 in Kelowna at an unofficial Dental Summit.  It was a meeting organized by a number of Henry Schein reps from Western Canada and gave us a chance to swap stories and notes on how we were working in the dental industry.

Mike and Workforce was one of the shining lights of that meeting as he addressed the issues of staffing, which we as reps get bombarded with requests when offices need people.  But Mike also educated us on the general unorganized mess that the Dental Temp Staffing arena is compared to other industries.

There is a lot of risk and inconvenience with how the current temp-staffing world works - for employees and employers.  Workforce is doing what they can to improve the experience for both employees and employers.
