BALANCE: an even distribution of weight enabling someone or something to remain upright and steady
Eva Frieden joins us on this episode to share how she has found BALANCE in the sport of triathlon. We had an impactful discussion on all the elements that are important to finding sustainable success as an age group athlete. SPOILER! Having fun and enjoying what you do = LESS chance of burnout and injury! Perhaps no surprise there, but this was a really good reminder for us.
Eva resides in Santa Monica, California and has been in the sport for a handful of years. Formerly a collegiate rower, she grew up very active playing a variety of sports and finding that the social aspect was something that really fueled her and kept her engaged. Now, she has completed over 10 Ironman and Half Ironman distance races! In 2022 she finished 2nd in her age group at Ironman Alaska and also earned her Kona spot, racing Ironman Hawaii in October!
There's no denying that Eva is a strong athlete - mentally and physically. You'll learn a lot from how she's navigated her race schedule, her approach to training with athletes often outside of the triathlon community, and really dialed into the things that bring her joy! She's a fan of good food, good coffee, and good company!
Up Next: Eva is racing the 2023 Boston Marathon - a first timer at a home race of sorts for her!

Stephanie Melkonian lives and trains in Albuquerque, New Mexico and is by no means new to Ironman. One might say she was not an overnight success in the sport - but what Stephanie DOES have is dedication, grit, and undeniable passion which FINALLY led her to earning that coveted Kona spot at Ironman Chattanooga in 2022.
Stephanie shares her journey - the ups and downs and the "almosts" - which created the path she was destined to follow. You may find many parallels to your own triathlon journey in her stories.
We also enjoyed hearing about the awards ceremony at Ironman Chattanooga where so many women were able to accept Kona spots for 2023. Stephanie shares that the room was full of energy and the women were SO excited. This is what it's all about - lifting up each other in sport and sharing in the joy of all the hard work day in and day out to reach dreams that were not possible until now.

This episode kicks off our new series - Couples Who Tri!
As Mission Kona Podcast co-hosts and a couple who does triathlon, Mike & Michelle thought it would be really interesting to hear how other couples navigate the sport together, what training looks like, how they came to the same sport... and SO MUCH MORE.
Our first couple, Nicole & David Levenson, recently completed 2022 Ironman California. And when we say completed, we actually mean CRUSHED it! Nicole finished 2nd in the 35-39 age group with a time of 10:00:50 in her second ever ironman distance race! This also secured her a spot to Kona in 2023. David finished 18th in the 35-39 age group with a time of 10:11:47 in his very first Ironman!
We enjoyed chatting with Nicole and David about their exposure to the sport, strengths, setbacks, successes, and failures that led them to an incredible race at Ironman California. You'll learn more about the course in CA, the unfortunate cancellation in 2021 due to extreme weather, and what makes it so special to share the love of the sport with your significant other.
Fun fact: Nicole is ALSO a sugar cookie decorator like Michelle! There could have been a whole podcast about that, but alas this is Mission Kona ;)

Shyanne McGregor - wife, mother of 3, physical therapist, coach, IRONMAN - from Duluth, Minnesota chats with Mike & Michelle about her success in triathlon right out of the gate. After an age group win in her first ever Ironman (Florida 2019), she shares the indescribable JOY that followed as well as the pressure that can accompany such an EPIC race day.
We can all relate to the ups and downs in the sport of triathlon, and Shyanne is open and honest about the challenges she has faced. Her strength and perseverance shined through in her most recent race at the 2022 Kona Ironman World Championship where she finished in under 11 hours (racing WITH a stress fracture)! I think we can all agree she got a BOOST of energy when she got ice on the course from none other than Jan Frodeno!
Shyanne is truly talented across all 3 disciplines, but also values strength training and mobility in her workout regimen. She lives a busy life, and does it with true grace! She credits consistency to much of her success.
Keep an eye on Shyanne - she's a fighter!
5:20 - "I bought a used road bike for like, $250 or something like that, in the summer of 2018, and just kind of fell in love with the sport from there."
12:13 - "I don't feel like I can ever top that as far as the feeling of it, because, the first one, I had no pressure, no expectations."
31:05 - "[I was] excited to get off the bike and be on my own two feet, and I was a little nervous. I just don't even know if my body is going to hold up for this long."
31:54 - "...and I look up and there's Jan Frodeno handing out water. And I'm like 'Can I get that water from you?' and he's like, yeah... so that was definitely a highlight of my race."
39:15 - "...you have to stay consistent. There's no secret key to any training program... it's just doing it day in, day out."
Professional Triathletes Shyanne would love to train with:
Chelsea Sodaro
Paula Findlay
Skye Moench
Shyanne's favorite gear: Cervelo bike

650+ weekly blogs / 400+ podcasts / 26 marathon races / 5 half ironman races / 2 books / 1 Mt. Kilimanjaro / 1 TEDx Talk / 1 Ironman….
Ironman Ironman I’m gonna do the Ironman
The bonkers race, all over the globe, the thousands training,
The Periodisation, the 10% increase, the coaching, the fueling
Whether or not you’re moving
its snowing or it’s raining.
The 4am get up, I’m in training.
The pick up, The kit, The pack, the club, the inspiration
Representing your nation
Ironman Ironman I’m gonna do the Ironman
The travel, the bike bag, the big list to pack
The id, the waiver,
or niggle in the back
I’m feeling tired cos of taper,
The stress of the airport, the baggage reclaim,
finding me bike,
diagnosing the foreign train
Where’s the hotel, the expo, the finish line clock
I Imagine the bliss
I’ve gotta get there I spent 30 weeks training for this
The water, the bike course, the run route the start
I am surrounded by physical specimens, they all look the part
Ironman Ironman I’m gonna do the Ironman
The bravado, the fear, the pre race Brief
A breakfast with Paula Newby Fraser
A dream beyond belief
The clank of the scaffold, the tarpaulin flap, the sound check
the wind, the smells, the tastes….
I’m drinking coffee in Klagenfurt, Freezing ice cream in Frankfurt
Pasta in Lanzarote in the Heat
or in the cold of Haugusund a cinnamon cake makes me repleat
The pre race food, decrease fibre, increase carb
The drop in caffeine, im being too fickle
Don’t eat too much, don’t eat to little
Check your bike in, check your bags in, white blue and red
Don’t mix them up their content being critical, this is doin me head
Ironman Ironman I’m gonna do the Ironman
Settling to doze, it’s 9 at night
The race is 10 hours off, sleep tight
I awake at 3, feel for my drink,
Then dress, go to the loo and check my kit
Down to breakfast to watch the Farce
Iron warriors, their rigid habits, does it matter
The Fueling dance
Bananas, honey, cereal, white bread
Yoghurt or Juice; not too much
The caffeine buzz to brighen the head.
Each to their own, what’s your daily bread.
I Queue for a bus, am I booked on it
or walk tired through the streets
white street bag and wetsuit, getting ready to don it
I am on my way
no turning back
An inspirational track
Zoning out listening to music
But I feel my heart starting to beat
Walking among the throngs in the dark dark street
Ironman Ironman I’m gonna do the Ironman
Approaching transition I hear the PA
The noise of the athletes mumbling away
The headtorches at 5.30 am
The sound of bike tyres being pumped and a groggy yawn
In the hope that the pressure will speed you along
The queues for the toilet, final bike check,
loading it with nutrition, Ah what the heck
I help an athlete do his zip, easy with so many acts of good will.
Let’s get my wetsuit on, in the morning chill
I work to stop chafing by putting on neck glide,
I see the athlete I helped
We look at each other smile, the exhilaration we cannot hide
Ironman Ironman I’m gonna do the Ironman
So to the start and we are packed together
1000s of us like penguins
but not standing on ice, between the toes just the feeling of sand or wet grass, nice
The PA, the 10s of thousands of spectators, wow what a roar
The national anthem
Our hearts in our chests or even our mouths, what more can you ask for.
7am, The siren goes and we run, run, as fast as we can like the race is 17seconds not 17 hours
I feel the water reach to my waste, dive in
I’m away… at last just my thoughts, the bar fight and my haste.
Ironman Ironman I’m gonna do the Ironman
The rhythm of swim, the sighting, the pace
The pleasure of feeling at one in your space
The Australian exit, then back in without time to thaw
I don’t want it to end, round again once more
As the swim comes to an end,
The distant cheer
The crowd comes into muffled swimcapped ear
And its up on my feet, to transition
To check on the weather, what do we have here?
The heat of the canaries, the rain and lightening of Norway or the Gales in Wales
Whatever it is….
Ironman Ironman I’m gonna do the Ironman
So onto the bike and into a spin
Athletes fall off, burst tyres as I try to settle in
The roads are a mix of asphalt, cobbles, tramlines
Hills, some with heat and some with wet slippy spills
The rear wheel slips as you Hit the hill at 100 miles
The sight of a country
You’ve never been in, the marshalls the drafters, the penalty bin.
Or the Wrestlers in Bolton, cheering you on, for an hour my face is one big grin.
Then I feel a bee sting on my leg
As we get to the end I feel sweat drip
from inside my helmet and onto my lip
The legs are tired; I get to the end and drop off the bike, helped by the ironman crew,
in a maze , The scaffolding we call T2
Then the duck waddle starts
Just trying not to think of the marathon ahead. What goes?
A chance to run on the route with the pros.
Ironman Ironman I’m gonna do the Ironman
On the run what’s your habit?
Run walk or run run or just eat crisps
Energy gels with salt or carb or caffeine
Or oranges, flat coke or Sandwiches by Greggs
Whether heat or rain, the supporters remain
They’re the real stalwarts, the hard ones
There for you to sustain
The second half of the run is tough enough,
The cage fight, kept light by the kids who high five
I am running out of energy
But the dream’s alive.
Treadwatering sea turtles Kona, big island, where the spirits thrive.
Ironman Ironman I’m gonna do the Ironman
To the last mile, for some its dark again
it’s getting late right?
Remember the cut off 12 midnight
The finish shute
Red carpet, the shout “you are an ironman’
The medal the food tent the t-shirt
The cheers and excitement
The realisation of hurt, the soreness the worn out shoe
Wondering did I bite off more than I can chew.
Out to support the people still racing
The Shouts of elation and Fireworks and family embracing.
So what next, there’s always next year
It’s never complete, not a race, it’s a way of life
Another race, another Ironman, another Ironwoman
Ironman Ironman I’m gonna do the Ironman
I recently asked Bobbe how she felt about not being able to compete in 2020, and if she plans to compete in 2021. She responded:
“Throughout 2019, I was asked if I’m going to “defend my title.” Then came the pandemic, which meant all of the races were canceled. But as it turns out, I hold my “title” for an extra year, save a ton of money in race fees and travel, and most importantly, as the “winner” I‘m automatically guaranteed my spot for the race in 2021. This is especially important to me this year because I turn 75 and only two women have ever completed the IM World Championship in the 75-79 age group. Regardless of the outcome, I’m super excited to race, and hope that it happens!”
I’m so honored to have Bobbe as my very first guest on I Am This Age! I’m inspired by her every time we speak, and I wish her the best of luck in her next race, hopefully in October of 2021.

Candice Warner is an ironwoman. She’s also the wife of Australian cricketer David Warner, and the mother of three girls. Most recently you would have seen her on Channel Seven’s SAS Australia.
Candice knows what it’s like to hit rock bottom. The first time she was there was because of a short-lived relationship she had when she was 22, and the second time was Cricket Australia's Ball Tampering incident of 2018.
So how did she get through those tough times? And what she has learnt about herself because of it?
