Episode 602: In The Seats With.... Christos Nikou and 'Fingernails'

Episode 602: In The Seats With.... Christos Nikou and 'Fingernails'

Trying to quantify, the unquantifiable can cause complications....

On this episode we find ourselves back in the saddle with films that bowed at TIFF as this entry looks at a film that tries to simply that ever complicated emotion of love.  It's time for 'Fingernails'.

Anna (Jessie Buckley) increasingly suspects that her relationship with her longtime partner may not actually be the real thing. In an attempt to improve things, she secretly embarks on a new assignment working at a mysterious institute designed to incite and test the presence of romantic love in increasingly desperate couples.

From Co-Writer and Director Christos Nikou; Fingernails is a fascinating sci-fi allegory about how love can't every really be boxed in by any set of rules.  Starring Jessie Buckley and Riz Ahmed, this film really manages to be gently subversive and twisted while talking about the idea of love.  Playing in realms that criss cross between science fiction, philosophy and your favourite Jane Austen novel, Fingernails might not be for everyone but it's got some really fascinating layers for those willing to look.

We talked with Christos about the origins of the film, shooting in Toronto and so very much more....

Fingernails is on Apple TV+ now.

    Men

    321 - Men

This week we’re talking about Men, the latest nightmare from Alex Garland that we both pretty much hated. We discuss the confusing thematic elements, the grotesque final act, and the 40% retention rate of Samuel’s viewing audience.

Also, why we hate seat-stealing cats. (Recorded May 30th, 2022.)

    Men: Human Slinky Rebirth

"Misogyny is bad, mmkay?" - Mr. Garrison, I mean Alex Garland. Mary joins Caitlin to talk about A24's new horror movie Men. While it has notes of everything we tend to like (commentary on misogyny, original sin allegories, cool body horror, and folklore), this one felt a little ham-fisted, and a bit 101. Still a cool effort, and certainly lots to dig into. Count how many times we say "I don't know." It's a lot. Be sure to check out Whitney's review at bloodygoodhorror.com, and keep an eye out for Mary's new show Binge This!

Episode 308: Hold Your Fire, Top Gun

Episode 308: Hold Your Fire, Top Gun

Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy return after a week off to catch-up on reviewing 12 new movies for you. They include a baseball documentary that premiered at SXSW this year (Facing Nolan), a new film written by Paul Schrader (There Are No Saints) and the great Haley Lu Richardson stars in a film about revisiting family trauma (Montana Story). They also revisit a Sundance comedy about two black friends trying not to get blamed when a white girl passes out in their house (Emergency) and one of the choices from the Chicago Critics Film Festival is a documentary about the longest hostage standoff in New York history (Hold Your Fire). Someone who never held their fire is given the four-hour documentary treatment by Judd Apatow (George Carlin’s American Dream). Four is also the number of television shows getting the feature length treatment including a pair of sequels (Downton Abbey: A New Era, Jackass 4.5) and two animated ones (Chip ‘N’ Dale: Rescue Rangers, The Bob’s Burgers Movie). Erik and Steve have divergent thoughts on the new Alex Garland film (Men) but they are certainly wingmen when it comes to throwing cold water on the latest legacy sequel (Top Gun: Maverick).
