Job regrets? What to do when your new job sucks

You were SO excited to accept your new job, with your pay rise and new title. So, when you find out a couple of weeks in to your new role that it’s not what you expected, it can be DEVASTATING.

In this week’s episode, Emma and Sarah, answer a listener who has a situation where she doesn’t like her new job. We'll talk about the value of giving it some time, looking at your original reasons for taking the job in the first place, but if you're just not happy a few months in, it may be time to move on...or is it?

🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Emily! She said “Emma and Sarah!! Thank you so much for making your podcast. I’m currently in the process of changing industries and I recently had an interview! I listened to your episode about preparing for interviews three times before I went in for mine. I was a little worried that I would start talking in an Aussie accent during it after listening to so many episodes haha. I’ve currently been emailing with another job that I really want to get, but it kinda makes me wonder, am I doing the emailing right!? Is there an episode about communicating professionally via email and text with job prospects? Thanks again for all the helpful info you guys share. I love it!”

The Toll Of Burnout On Medical Workers — And Their Patients

The Toll Of Burnout On Medical Workers — And Their Patients
Burnout has long been a problem among health care workers. The pandemic has only made it worse. Some were hopeful COVID vaccines would provide some relief, but that hasn't been the case. Now, health care workers are leaving the industry — and they're taking their expertise with them. Plenty of surveys say that burnout hurts patient care. NPR correspondent Yuki Noguchi spoke to medical workers who agree, the burnout they see on the job means that sometimes patients are not getting what they need.

    Working Your Way to Happiness

    Working Your Way to Happiness

Marty kills rats... but if you asked him what his job is he'd say it was "solving problems" and "helping people". How we view our work can contribute greatly to our daily levels of happiness - far more than money or status.

Dr Laurie Santos examines how we all came to ignore the importance of job satisfaction and hears from Professor Amy Wrzesniewski about "job crafting" - the reframing skill that happy people like Marty use to see their careers as more than just a way to make money.

#578: Figuring Out If You Should Change Careers (And How to Do It)

#578: Figuring Out If You Should Change Careers (And How to Do It)

Have you been feeling doubts about your career recently, or perhaps for quite some time? Maybe you're not sure if you're in the right job, or even in the right field, and you can't figure out if you should try to keep making your current position work, or jump ship to something else.

Then you'll likely recognize yourself in the stages of career transition my guest will describe. His name is Joseph Liu. He's a consultant, coach, and speaker who helps people navigate the challenges of switching careers. In his work, he's seen that there's a recurring pattern individuals follow when thinking about and making this weighty decision, which he calls the "7 Stages of Career Change." Today on the show, Joseph walks us through these stages, which begin with Doubt and Dismay and end with Reflection and Relaunch. With each stage, Joseph explains what typically goes through people's minds, common mistakes that are made, and the best actions to take, which sometimes involves transitioning out of your current career, and sometimes does not. We end our conversation with the considerations to keep in mind if you do decide to make a change.

    You 2.0: Dream Jobs

    You 2.0: Dream Jobs

Why do you work? Are you mostly in it for the money, or do you have another purpose? Popular wisdom says your answer depends on the nature of your job. But psychologist Amy Wrzesniewski finds it may have more to do with how we think about our work. She finds we're about evenly split in whether we say we have a job, a career, or a calling. As part of our You 2.0 series, we bring you this March 2016 conversation with Amy about how we find meaning and purpose at work.
