San Jose Hockey Now Podcast #10: Kevin Constantine Guest Stars + NHL Scout Talks Granlund, Hoffman, Rutta

San Jose Hockey Now Podcast #10: Kevin Constantine Guest Stars + NHL Scout Talks Granlund, Hoffman, Rutta

Kevin Constantine joins the San Jose Hockey Now Podcast!

But before we get to Kevin Constantine (33:57), Sheng and Keegan discuss the latest additions to the San Jose Sharks staff like Ryan Miller and Thomas Vanek (1:10), and what the Miller hiring signals about the Sharks’ continued investment in player development (8:20). They also reflect on former Sharks’ first-round pick Ryan Merkley signing in the KHL (14:45).

Sheng shares an NHL scout’s thoughts on new Sharks players Mikael Granlund (23:12), Mike Hoffman (27:42), and Jan Rutta (30:32).

    Now, Kevin Constantine (33:57)!

Constantine recalled coaching influences as diverse as Phil Jackson, Bill Walsh, Bo Schembechler, and John Wooden (36:40). What was Constantine’s hockey take on Wooden’s Pyramid of Success?

He coached the Kalamazoo Wings when they were a Minnesota North Stars affiliate, before the North Stars split up to help form the expansion Sharks (45:15). So Constantine coached the legendary Link Gaetz, and tells the story of when Gaetz beat up his own goalie.

Constantine took over behind the San Jose Sharks bench in the third year of the franchise, after they had only won 28 games in their first two seasons in the league. How did he add belief and discipline to a 1993-94 group that would go on a surprise playoff run, upsetting the top-seeded Detroit Red Wings in the first round (49:35)?

That season, Constantine made the unusual coaching decision to allow five players a lot more latitude offensively than the rest of the team. Those five, Igor Larionov, Sergei Makarov, Johan Garpenlov, Sandis Ozolinsh, and Jeff Norton, were the precursor to Detroit’s Russian Five, and would help propel the Sharks to success. What was behind Constantine loosening the reins on Larionov and company (53:52)? And how are Pittsburgh Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan’s recent comments about integrating Erik Karlsson related (57:53)?

Constantine shares why he wasn’t happy about the city of San Jose throwing the Sharks a parade after their second-round loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs (1:04:00).

Constantine says he was in “Dumb and Dumber” and talks about how that movie and Jamie Baker helped inspire the ’94 Sharks (1:07:20).

Constantine reveals Tom Pederson’s girlfriend as the culprit behind leaking the Red Wings’ playoff plans to the Sharks (1:10:35).

He also recounts going with backup Wade Flaherty over Arturs Irbe in the 1995 playoffs, which helped propel the San Jose Sharks to another first-round upset, this time against the Calgary Flames (1:17:25).

Constantine opens up about getting fired by the San Jose Sharks early in the 1995-96 season (1:20:02). He was 37 then, and up to that point, a bit of a coaching wunderkind, so he took it hard.

Though he was a young head coach, Constantine says that he was a yeller who learned to relate to players a lot better as he got older, in the second half of his career (1:23:35).

After head coaching stints with Jaromir Jagr’s Penguins and Martin Brodeur’s New Jersey Devils, Constantine continued coaching in the NAHL, WHL, and AHL. In 2010, he got offered a coaching position in France, and was advised by multiple hockey people to not take that job. But he did, why (1:35:25)?

This started an international coaching odyssey that’s taken him also to professional leagues in Switzerland, Korea, Poland, and Hungary. He reflects on those experiences.

Constantine closes with a couple hilarious Jagr stories (1:42:08).

Finally, we wrap up with Constantine’s thoughts about taking over new WHL side, the Wenatchee Wild (1:51:38).

Principles Friday: "Always Keep Moving" by John Wooden

Every Friday, I share with you one principle that has inspired me.

In this episode, I share with you one principle by John Wooden: "Always Keep Moving."

In our daily life, we have to make multiple decisions daily. It becomes really hard when you don’t have any key points based on what you will make that particular decision. Our understanding of the world around us is largely shaped by the core principles we have accepted. Principles recognize what is true and help us apply truth to new or unknown situations. A good set of principles will enable us to make decisions quickly, even if our situation is completely new.

Principles Friday will help you share the principles of successful entrepreneurs, founders, and big thinkers.

Season 13, Ep. 12: Behind the Scenes with a New York Times Best Selling Author (Don Yaeger)

In today’s episode, I read between the lines with former Sports Illustrated Associate Editor and 11-time New York Times Best Selling author Don Yaeger. Don is an equally powerful leadership speaker and host of the Corporate Competitor Podcast. His sports knowledge is unparalleled, and his book writing process is fascinating. Don has an innate ability to get people to have the courage to open up and be truly vulnerable. To say he is a master at his craft would be an understatement. I first met Don at the National Speakers Associations annual conference in 2018 and have been a huge fan ever since.

This season I’m exploring what high performers do behind the scenes. I’ve been enjoying fascinating conversations with professional stand-up comedians, magicians, actors, rappers, dancers, YouTubers, athletes, coaches, and everything in between to find out exactly what they do behind the curtain – when the cameras are off and the arenas are empty – to work towards mastery of their craft and to prepare themselves to perform at a world class level. I hope you find their insights, perspectives, and personal strategies as helpful as I do and use what they share to continue to Raise Your Game.

Thank you so much for investing your time with us. I hope we helped you Raise Your Game and provided useful insight on how you can maximize your time and effort. If you found this episode helpful, would you be open-minded to supporting the show? Would you be kind enough to share it with a friend or colleague? Would you take 30 seconds and leave us a rating and review? Those two things help support the show’s mission and message more than you know. And don’t ever forget, a candle loses nothing by lighting another candle.

Coach Bruce Brown - Wisdom, Curiosity, & The Car Ride Home

As you've seen, Season 3 is dedicated to my father, Mike Jacox, who passed away late in 2021. I Love and miss you, Dad.  Thank you, #CatchSitkaSportFishing and #ACMEHomes, for your continued support!!!  Today's episode only happens thanks to a heartfelt introduction from my good friend, Josh McFadyen.  THANK YOU!

Today, we sat down with the legendary Coach Bruce Brown, the Managing Director for Proactive coaching.    After spending time with Bruce over Zoom, I was lucky to visit him and his lovely wife, Dana.  The one thing that stood out and was so powerful with the attention, the look in his eye, showed how much Bruce and Dana are in love.  So inspiring and a reminder for us dads to slow down to make sure our wives know how much we love them.

Bruce is a very talented author, coach, speaker, and mentor to many.  Below are some career highlights

    • 35 years as a teacher, coach, and athletic administrator at the junior high, high school, junior college, and collegiate levels.
    • Coached football, basketball, baseball, and volleyball
    • Former National presenter for the NAIA’s Champions of Character Program
    • Clinician – Speaking nationally to athletes, coaches, parents, school districts, and corporations

Here is one of the famous articles written about Bruce Brown and his partner, Rob Miller.

    Some other highlights worth sharing:

    • Encourage healthy risk-taking for our kids in sports.
    • Value is not measured by the performance of the game.
    • Are your words serving us as dads OR are they serving others? Powerful!
    • An amazing story when Bruce spent time backstage with the famous Cal Ripken.

Lastly, Coach Brown has been on stage with some amazing individuals that I'm sure you have heard of including: Coach John Wooden, Coach K, Coach Dean Smith, Coach Dick Vermiel, and Coach Buck O'Neil from the American Negro Baseball league.

Please don't forget to leave us a review wherever you consume your podcasts! Please help us get more dads to listen weekly and become the ultimate leader of their homes!

    Bill Walton - Part 1

    Bill Walton - Part 1
Bill Walton said the Celtics saved his life. He was a kid from La Mesa, California, who didn't have a TV at home, but would catch Celtics games wherever he could. It was his dream to play on the parquet floor, and when it finally happened in 1985, Walton thought he was so terrible "a disgrace to basketball" that he apologized to the team. Bird and McHale told him not to be so hard on himself, there were 81 games to go. The 1986 Championship team was the happiest time of his professional life. The cycle was complete - Walton was still the pot-smoking Grateful Dead-loving guru he'd been at UCLA, but now he won titles with both John Wooden and Red Auerbach. And stay tuned for why he rubbed dirt from Larry Bird's driveway on his chest.

EP 58 - Coach Larry Farmer, 44 Years of College Coaching & Lessons Learned Playing for Coach John Wooden

EP 58 - Coach Larry Farmer, 44 Years of College Coaching & Lessons Learned Playing for Coach John Wooden

    Coach Larry Farmer,
In this episode, you’ll hear from Larry Farmer. Coach Farmer recently retired after a great 44-year coaching career. After a terrific high school career in Denver, Coach Farmer attended UCLA where he played for the legendary coach, John Wooden. At UCLA, Coach Farmer was a part of teams that won three straight National Championships. UCLA had a 89-1 record during this three-year span. As a matter of fact, Coach Farmer just returned back from UCLA; celebrating the 50th anniversary of the 1972 National title team. After being drafted in the NBA by the Cleveland Cavaliers and in the ABA by the Denver Nuggets, Coach Farmer played professionally in Germany. However, early on, Coach Larry knew that he wanted to coach. Returning to his alma mater,  Coach Farmer was an assistant coach at UCLA from 1973 to 1981. And, at the age of 30, Coach Farmer was named the Head Coach of UCLA. Coach Farmer was a college Head Coach for 12 Seasons: at UCLA, at Weber State, and at Loyola Chicago. He also has been an assistant at UCLA, at the University of Hawaii, at Rhode Island, at North Carolina State, and at Western Michigan, as well as an assistant coach for the NBA's Golden State Warriors. This podcast is an incredible reflection of some of the great teachings of Coach John Wooden. And, Coach Larry Farmer is indeed a teacher of the game of basketball and life. Wait until you hear Coach Farmer talk about topics such as: being patient, be enthusiastic, how to be demanding but not demeaning, and how to be encouraging. Whereas, we all talk about our teams being fundamental. The real life examples that Coach Farmer shares about how the fundamentals were such a key ingredient to Coach Wooden’s success will have you rethinking how you approach your own team. Finally, the concept of “We and Us versus I and Me” is such a wonderful ending to the podcast. This teamwork mindset is such a great reminder for your team and family. Oh by the way, at the conclusion of this podcast, I promise that we will all be pulling out our pencils again. Coach Farmer ends the podcast with a massive tip on why he always used a pencil and how we should be always thinking about our post practice notes!

Do You Have Leadership Double-Vision? Should You?

Do You Have Leadership Double-Vision? Should You?

One of the many challenges we face as leaders is where to spend our time and energy.  Recently I came across an insightful analogy that can help us approach this problem.  It has to do with having a kind of leadership double-vision.

     Notes and Resources:

“If the ladder is not leaning against the right wall, every step we take just gets us to the wrong place faster.”  - Stephen Covey

If we are to devote time to any task, no matter how mundane, we should make sure that time is well-invested.”  - Ken Downer

Wooden’s focus on the details of every practice brought his team to the point that when the big games came around, he did not worry about the outcome.  He allowed the score to take care of itself.   - Ken Downer

He is also the author of Coach 'Em'Way Up: Five Lessons for Leading the John Wooden Way. Lynn spent significant periods of time in the presence of legendary UCLA basketball Coach John Wooden before his passing in 2010, learning a great deal of wisdom from this "philosopher-coach" who impacted the lives of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Bill Walton and many others. Lynn now shares this wisdom with us.

The profundity of insights in this conversation is beyond compare. We dig deep into Coach Wooden's definition of success which helped him stay present, calm and at peace day to day. #70 - 3 Minute Thursday: Coach John Wooden's Rules for Success

#70 - 3 Minute Thursday: Coach John Wooden's Rules for Success

Welcome to our new segment, "Three Minute Thursday"  (#3MinThursday) where I highlight a piece of wisdom I’ve come across from my own readings over the past week, or share with you an inspirational anecdote that can help you lead a more calm, free and full life.

    --

Coach John Wooden is one of the most revered coaches in sports history, the brains behind the Pyramid of Success, and known for his simple, inspirational messages that have impacted thousands of individuals and organizations. Since on this podcast I try to uncover timeless wisdom – no matter who its from or what century it was born in that can help us lead our best lives - I’ve been drawn to Coach Wooden's work for a while and today I wanted to share some bits of wisdom I found from a recent book I read on the life of John Wooden.

It seems John Wooden learned the bulk of his most important life lessons from his father, Joshua, a farmer than a sanitarium worker from Indiana who lived through the Great Depression. One day Joshua wrote down a direct set of rules “Two sets of Threes” for John and his brothers:

    Never Lie, Cheat, or Steal.

Don’t Whine, Don't Complain, and Don't Make Excuses.

Coach Wooden never put up with complaining from his players. He expected a see a positive attitude from every player every day. Whining was particularly destructive because it took the spotlight off the “we” and onto the “me”.

Complaining is draining – it drains us and the people around us.

The act of complaining is 100% under our control. The attitude we bring to every moment and every situation in our lives is under our control.

This little story also made me think immediately of this quote by 18th c French philosopher and writer Voltaire: “The most important decision you make, is to be in a good mood.”

Our life is only as good as the choices we make. The more we can find that space, the breath, the moment to catch ourselves in every new situation and respond by not complaining rather than reacting by complaining, that’s when we utilize the skills we have on the inside to live our best lives on the outside.

Ep. 42: Legendary photographer Michael Zagaris (Part 1)

Ep. 42: Legendary photographer Michael Zagaris (Part 1)

For a few blissful moments shortly after midnight on June 5, 1968, young campaign staffer Michael Zagaris believed Bobby Kennedy would become President. The Senator had just won the California primary, but moments after his victory speech at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles, he was assassinated--as Zagaris and others looked on in horror. In Part 1 of our wide-ranging look at his legendary career, Zagaris recounts RFK’s shooting and the impact it had on his psyche and aspirations. Ultimately, advice from guitar god Eric Clapton--after the two had shared several bowls of hashish in a Sausalito hotel room--would compel Zagaris to become a photographer, one who would make a massive impact in the rock n’ roll and sports worlds. We learn about his Baptism By Vomit (courtesy of drunken Doors frontman Jim Morrison) and much, much more.
