    Driveway Beers Podcast

    Julian Assange!!

Julian Assange has been imprisoned for close to 5 years fighting extradition to the United States. Recent developments may change his status, but when will the witch hunt end? We talk about why he's being held and why this is one of the strangest stories of the last 5 years. Oddly enough, the person that sent him the information has already been released from prison with no further issues, so why is the guy that published the information still an issue?

    A New Civil Rights Movement

    A New Civil Rights Movement

On today's episode of Justice Matters, co-host Maggie Gates talks with Jill Collen Jefferson, a civil and human rights lawyer and the founder of Julian, a national organization based in Mississippi that works to attack discrimination in all forms through legal advocacy, organizing, policy, and innovation. With experience on Capitol Hill, at think-tanks, Organizing for Action, the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, the Public International Law and Policy Group, and big law, Jill brings a tremendous depth of knowledge and personal experience to her effort to build the future of civil and human rights. Together she and Maggie discuss: the founding of Julian, how they draw on  international human rights movements to build their civil rights strategy in the US, why focusing on Mississippi is so important, modern day lynchings, and how building community is central to building a new civil rights movement.

The Sea Orphan - Julian Harvey & Bluebelle

The Sea Orphan - Julian Harvey & Bluebelle

When Julian Harvey was found in the ocean floating in a dinghy, he convinced everyone that he was the lone survivor of a catastrophic shipwreck. After all, 7-year-old Rene Dupperault lay lifeless beside him, proving that everyone else on board had perished in the disaster. When Harvey was brought to Nassau for questioning, they didn't have much to hold him on, so they shipped him back to the United States. While in the middle of questioning with the Coast Guard in Miami, more news came of the shipwreck. A survivor, and not one that Harvey expected.

Helping Mission-driven Founders Set Vision and Values with Lindsey Julian

Helping Mission-driven Founders Set Vision and Values with Lindsey Julian

In this episode of The Sixth Degree Podcast meet Lindsey Julian a communications coach and consultant who helps mission-driven founders and executives with internal and external communications, including thought leadership and brand building. Lindsey leverages her super powers to help founders figure out their company culture and tell their founder story to create impact and legacy.

    What you'll learn:

    • Lindsey emphasizes the importance of authenticity and real conversations, particularly in podcast interviews, where she loves being people's first guest. She values the opportunity to dive deep and connect with others without posturing.
    • As a thought leadership and communications coach, Lindsey helps founders and executives clarify their vision and values within their organizations. She emphasizes the significance of consistent and clear communication both internally and externally. She helps clients build authority and humanize their brands through various content strategies and media placements.
    • Lindsey mentions Sara Blakely (Spanx founder) and Arianna Huffington as examples of founders who excel at being the face of their brands and consistently show up with their brand story. She appreciates brands that go beyond profit and align with a purpose, which resonates with her own values.
    • The human element and storytelling are crucial aspects that distinguish brands and cannot be replicated by AI or robots. Lindsey believes in uncovering the distinct "you" factor and incorporating unique experiences and journeys into brand communication.
    • One common mistake she observes among her clients is focusing too much on a narrow niche and neglecting to showcase the human behind the brand. Lindsey encourages founders to highlight all aspects of themselves that make them unique, which allows for a broader audience connection.
    • Lindsey breaks down the mistakes into three categories: external, internal, and overarching. Externally, she advises against over-focusing on a narrow niche and encourages showcasing the multifaceted aspects of the founder. Internally, she emphasizes the importance of clear and consistent communication from top to bottom within organizations. Overall, she believes that building a personal brand requires highlighting the human element and being true to oneself.
    • Lindsey's approach to communications coaching and consulting centers around helping clients build their brand's credibility, authority, and authenticity. She values the power of human connection and the role it plays in effective communication and leadership.

S6 E4: The Triumph of the Cross

S6 E4: The Triumph of the Cross

We begin this episode with a guarantee to not go on any rants, which itself prompts a rant! We discuss how Christianity came to be accepted in the Roman Empire, the flawed conversion of Emperor Constantine, the early Liturgy, the first monks, and much more! Centered around figures such as St. Augustine, Julian the Apostate, and St. Simeon Stylites, this is a wide-ranging discussion that covers many topics. As always, we share our own opinions on topics like allowing priests to marry, the value of architecture, and personal gripes with certain prayers at Mass!

Alfred K. LaMotte, Fred, Uplifting and Awakening Poet, and Interfaith Chaplain

Alfred K. LaMotte, Fred, Uplifting and Awakening Poet, and Interfaith Chaplain

In this episode, we share a beautiful heart-centered and heart-awakening conversation with an Interfaith chaplain and college instructor in world religions, Alfred K. LaMotte, familiar to us as Fred.

    • We get invited to walk barefoot and un-name the stars
    • We learn that when you have no agenda life can be so original and simple
    • We admit that we have wings that are vast and crystal
    • We P-R-A-Y together and P-R-E-Y together until a flame of healing arises and we purr
    • We give ourselves permission to eat whatever is delicious
    • Hear how an aspiring general has alchemized into a warrior of the spirit
    • We honor inhalation like a royal guest and make a spacious tent of our flesh
    • We learn that the one who whirled the stars into life has come into our body as this breath and unless we become hollow….we won’t be filled with music
    • We remember that when we are aware of our own flesh under our feet we save the earth by savoring the earth

Fred has published five books of poems, “Wounded Bud: Poems for Meditation, / “Shimmering Birthless: A Confluence of Verse and Image”,/ “Savor Eternity One Moment At A Time”, / “The Fire of Darkness: What Burned Me Away Completely, I Became”, and his forthcoming and highly anticipated book, “The Nectar of This Breath”… from Saint Julian Press, scheduled for release the week this episode was recorded.

Fred is a graduate of Yale University and Princeton Theological Seminary, He is a meditation guide who loves to gather circles for meditation and poetry.

He lives in a small town on Puget Sound with his beloved wife Anna. It is rumored that he “…loves to walk barefoot in the wet grass at midnight, un-naming the stars.”

Fred says, "The radical act is being present. The revolution is to breathe."   Let’s be radically present with him and breathe his poetry as prayer!
