Is home ownership becoming the great divide in Australia?

Is home ownership becoming the great divide in Australia?

For decades in Australia, a house hasn't just been a place to call home, it's been a good investment.

House prices have significantly outpaced other parts of the economy and while the average cost of a house used to be about 3.5 times the average income, these days it's closer to 7.5.

And that's great news for those who've received good returns on their investments, but has lead to tough times for anyone paying off a mortgage or trying to buy their first home.

What's led to this rapid change? and is it possible to find a better balance in the way that we look at housing in Australia?

John & Tim's State of the State

John & Tim's State of the State

John and Tim are guest-less on this episode and while they may feel naked, they aren't afraid. We talk about the construction industry as inflation, gas and material prices are up. Yet, there are some companies that have decided to invest during the pandemic, and we are seeing that as doors are starting to open back up for customer visits and training. One such visit was Rinnai, which has invested in domestic tankless manufacturing. You'll hear from Rinnai president, Frank Windsor. We also talk about the most expensive and cheapest areas of the country for home improvements. A lot of nuggets in this week's convo. Photo courtesy of C.J. Erickson Plumbing Co.

Kohler: 42 Years of Strategy, Innovation & Expanding Builder Segment with Wally Schwartz

Kohler: 42 Years of Strategy, Innovation & Expanding Builder Segment with Wally Schwartz

Wally joined Kohler Co.’s Minneapolis Branch directly following his graduation from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN in 1976.

In October 2020, after over four decades with Kohler Co., Wally retired as a Director – Sales, Builder Channel, a position that he had held since 2008. Today, he serves as a consultant and brand ambassador for the luxury kitchen and bath manufacturer.

In 2014, Wally’s contribution to Kohler Co. was acknowledged when he was chosen as the recipient of the company’s highest and most prestigious recognition, the Chairman’s Award. Wally was also recognized by CBUSA in March 2020 with its first inaugural and annual Walter G Schwartz – Award of Excellence award.

Wally considers applauding good work and innovation, as well as having an atmosphere and a spirit of collaboration, as keys to cultivating good company culture. He also encourages going above and beyond what is expected in demonstrating to your people that they are supported, such as by sending them handwritten notes.

He goes on to discuss his 12 years as the focal person for “all things builder” within Kohler Plumbing North America, how he came to collaborate with CBUSA, and the major changes he personally witnessed within the company since joining them over 40 years ago.

In particular, he speaks on the reputation that Kohler has built for “elevating kitchen and bath into the fashion industry” and its recent push for more sustainable and environmentally-friendly products.

    Key Quotes by Walter Schwartz

    • It’s important in any company to have an atmosphere and a spirit of collaboration.
    • I love Kohler Co. The work was hard; but, when you have a passion for something and when you really love something, it’s a great feeling.
    • The elevation of the kitchen and bath into the fashion industry – even our competitors would admit that Kohler Co. has been the leader in doing that.
    • Kohler Co., for as long as I can remember, has consistently reinvested 90% or more of its earnings into the company. I think that’s really important when funding the growth of the company and expansion and so forth requires a lot of fiscal discipline.

    Episode 47: Whistling Straits/Blackwolf Run

    Episode 47: Whistling Straits/Blackwolf Run

On this week's episode Brian and Dave break down their trip to Kohler, WI to play in a two day, two man event at Whistling Straits and Blackwolf Run. The boys give Doug crap for his Milwaukee dinner recommendations, Dave talks about his putting woes, and Brian explains how it's possible to hit a ball multiple times into Lake Michigan.

Despite some up and down golf, the boys were actually pretty competitive and share their thoughts on the two courses and what it was like playing Whistling Straits a month after the Ryder Cup.

    Episode 43: Ryder Cup Preview

    Episode 43: Ryder Cup Preview

On this week's episode we hear a brief recap of how Todd battled Dave's 13 year old daughter down to the wire. You'll have to listen to see how it plays out.

Then we turn our attention to all things Ryder Cup. We talk about the role of the captain, who are the leaders for the US team, and why the Euros have been so successful.

Next we turn our attention to the course itself and which holes on the front and back that will probably be the swing holes before trying to take our guesses on who Stricker and Harrington will pair together in the foursomes/fourball matches.

D.J Humphries of the Arizona Cardinals

D.J Humphries of the Arizona Cardinals

    D. J. shares his path to becoming an offensive lineman in the NFL and the mentors that guided him down that path, which includes his father, former wide receiver D. J. Humphries, Sr. He then describes his thought process going into his decision to join Florida after being recruited by virtually every Division I program in the country.

    D. J. then talks about the “loss of structure once you leave the building” that he was faced with after being drafted into the NFL. Being his own “sole proprietor” as a professional athlete, D. J. needed to make his own judgement calls throughout his young career. This consisted of everything from the business of being a player in the NFL down to figuring out how he uniquely performed as an athlete and how far he was willing to push himself (even while injured).

Finally, D. J. dives deep into the topic of leadership and team culture, not just within football, but when it comes to sports in general. He explains his mindset that always pushes to “bridge the gap” of misunderstandings and other conflicts between team members, and why open communication and having tough conversations are a must in order to understand cultural differences and maximize the synergy of a team.

    Key Quotes by DJ Humphries:

    • I feel like I’m a pretty smart guy, but I don’t like being forced to learn things that I don’t want to learn.
    • Once I figured out how bad it feels to play injured, I became effective at playing injured. If I’m hurting, I’m playing. If I can play injured and still be effective, I’ll be fine.
    • Having synergy and being accountable to each other, not just in sports but even in business, is huge.
    • Bringing together people who come from different backgrounds and have different experiences all comes down to having an open mind. I can’t be pissed off if I can’t explain my side. This is where, as humans, we have to bridge the gap by wanting to learn from one another.

Adapting a global company, the Ryder Cup postponement, running a family business, and the importance of companies being an environmentalist as well as capitalist are all things we talk about on this episode with David Kohler, CEO of the Kohler Company.

    29: Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

We apologize in advance for the sounds that we produce towards the end of this episode. That is all.

INTRO: (00:00) Improv skills make for an entertaining podcast, for sure. Alison and Lulu are together in Florida, so they went to Birch & Vine, which Alison had visited in Episode 9.

OBSESSIONS: (5:20) Alison is obsessed with Angry Orchard Rosé Hard Cider, its just so good. Lulu is obsessed with Emerald Jalapeño Cashews, which she shared with Alison without describing the jalapeño part first. Oops.

WISHLIST: (7:29) Alison is wishing for new luggage. It’d be handy for these 10k Dollar Day trips, but also for real life. Lulu wants to figure out a way to get to this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

ALISON’S 10K DAY - BOLIVIA: (11:51) Alison has a hard time spending money on her trip. She stays at the Hotel Camino Real. It’s elegant, but not quite the 5-star experience she’s “used” to. Alison takes a quick flight to Uyuni, where she enjoys a private tour of the Salt Flats including a magical sunset, with complementary wine! Alison has lunch at Sal Negra before heading back to Santa Cruz. She enjoys a chocolate therapeutic massage at Zen Aqua Spa. Touted as the best restaurant in Bolivia, dinner at Gustu Restaurant was incredible. With nothing else to do, Alison splurges on a bottle of wine, the 2015 Cheval Blanc Bordeaux Blend. It costs over $7,000.

LULU’S 10K DAY - KOHLER, WI: (30:25) A stay at The American Club, where the Kohler company housed immigrant workers in an effort to make them feel more at home. Lulu heads out for the day in a rented Rolls Royce. Lulu  charters a sport fishing boat. Next she visits the Kohler Design Center, then takes a tour of Bookworm Gardens. She helps cook the fish she caught earlier thanks to a cooking class at Relish Kitchen Store. Next is a Waterfall Massage at the hotel spa. Dinner at Wisconsin Club, where she takes two shots of Macallan 25 year to go, to sip while in her incredible Kohler bathtub, of course. L-u-x-u-r-y.
