Finding Joy part 7 - Compassion

Finding Joy part 7 - Compassion

    Episode 100 - Finding Joy part 7 - Compassion

Compassion is a vital part of finding and reaching for joy. Joy is about embracing the entire human experience – the good, the bad, and the really hard. Compassion is the 7th pillar, and one of the pillars of the heart. When we use this pillar of compassion, we see the shared humanity within all of us and we connect more with others, and that in itself helps us to reach for joy.

    Take away #1
Compassion connects you to other humans. This is vital to your biological need to be a part of a group. Your shared humanity with others and the ability to connect with others through that shared humanity can help you find joy.

    Take away #2
When you have compassion for yourself, you naturally will begin to extend it to others. Second great commandment – love others as you love yourself. Can’t love others when you can’t love yourself. We are the most joyful when we focus on others.

    Challenge
Kristin Neff is a self-compassion expert. She has a short test on her website that measures the elements of self-compassion (self-kindness, common humanity, and mindfulness) and the things that get in the way (self-judgment, isolation, and over-identification). Go take the test and sign up for her emails. This will help you see what you need to pay attention to in your own life in developing compassion.

I lay it all out in this episode.  The core beliefs that my brain has ingrained since childhood that push me towards perfectionism and how I have to keep practicing self-compassion to break those connections in my brain.

Mindful Moment: Dealing with Difficult Emotions (38)

Mindful Moment: Dealing with Difficult Emotions (38)

This mindful moment shares a meditation on dealing with difficult emotions based on RAIN from Tara Brach and Dr. Kristin Neff's practice, "Soften, Soothe, and Allow".  This practice holds space to feel and nurture yourself and difficult emotions as they arise. Practice this meditation in a place where you feel safe and supported, and if you do not feel ready to practice, or are in a peaceful mood, skip this one and return to it at a later date. This practice is based on Episode 37: What You Eat Matters with Jessica Due.

Encore: EP 37:ThePowerful habit of Compassion: SelfHelp Guru:Dr. Neff
Join Best Selling Author Dr. Kristin Neff as we discuss the habit of how we talk to ourselves - with compassion rather than criticism and HOW we can talk to ourselves to be our own best friends. Dr. Neff received her doctorate from the University of California at Berkeley, and is currently an Associate Professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Texas at Austin. During Kristin’s last year of graduate school she became interested in Buddhism and has been practicing meditation in the Insight Meditation tradition ever since. While doing her post-doctoral work she decided to conduct research on self-compassion – a central construct in Buddhist psychology and one that had not yet been examined empirically. Kristin is a pioneer in the field of self-compassion research, creating a scale to measure the construct almost 20 years ago. In addition to writing numerous academic articles and book chapters on the topic, she is author of the book Self-Compassion: The Proven Power of Being Kind to Yourself, and in June 2021 she will be releasing her new book Fierce Self-Compassion: How Women Can Harness Kindness to Speak Up, Claim Their Power and Thrive. In conjunction with her colleague Dr. Chris Germer, she has developed an empirically supported training program called Mindful Self-Compassion, which is taught by thousands of teachers worldwide. They co-authored The Mindful Self-Compassion Workbook as well as Teaching the Mindful Self-Compassion Program: A Guide for Professionals. She is also co-founder of the nonprofit Center for Mindful Self-Compassion.

Solo episode: Mary starts a self-compassion practice

Solo episode: Mary starts a self-compassion practice

I feel truly inspired to share my new self-compassion practice. You know when something just hits you on the right day at the right time and it feels like you just stumbled in to your future??? As I continue on my personal growth and healing journey I have become more and more open to new ways of approaching the same problems and finding a lot of creative solutions. Self compassion feels like the next creative (yet logical and rooted in science) addition to my journey. I release the feelings of foolishness or vulnerability when I tell people "every morning I look in the mirror and tell myself that I am my own best friend". Nobody judges me more than me, and now I say enough. I deserve better.

    Resources I mention:

This is NOT a comprehensive list, but truly where I started. These three researchers (Germer, Neff and Shapiro) appear to be the biggest names in the field. So I definitely stumbled into the best place to start.
I am honored you are joining me on this journey, and I want to hear from you. Seriously!
