To Have Hope, or to Go to Bed (Dodgers Series Recap, 5/15-5/17)

Technically the Minnesota Twins lost two of three games to the Dodgers in Los Angeles this week, but neither David nor Dan are fully willing to admit it based on how the end of Game 1 went down, thanks to some bad umpiring. They discuss that as well as the Twins' bounce-back victory in Game 2 and a lackluster performance in Game 3. David returns and defends himself against the many attacks he feels he suffered from Dan and Hoges last episode while also trying to take the high road above the criticism. Dan praises the work of starter Bailey Ober, while David is forced to admit that he probably should have just taken Byron Buxton in Puckett's Picks for this series. They discuss the pending roster move to replace the injured Nick Gordon and wonder what the circumstances will be on June 1, when Royce Lewis is eligible to return from the 60-day IL. Thanks for listening, and go Twins!

Eviscerated by the Evil Empire West (Dodgers Series Recap, 8/9-8/10)

The Minnesota Twins were overmatched in a two-game series with the Los Angeles Dodgers, and it is perhaps comforting for David and Dan that they no longer need to play a team that looks an awful lot like the New York Yankees in stature and mystique. Back together after being apart the last three series, David and Dan find the Twins in second place for the first time in a long while, and they find it hard to see a ton of bright spots in this two-game performance against the Dodgers. They discuss Rocco Baldelli's management of his pitchers, and Dan wonders whether the manager's punishment for his unkind words to the league is an admittance that the replay booth in New York got that call wrong last series. Though they are confident Minnesota is still the best team in the AL Central, they boys are eager to see the Twins put together a winning streak as their competition gets a bit weaker the next few series. Thanks for listening, and go Twins!

Baseball and BBQ Episode #102: Joey Machado from Blues Hog & Tim Neverett, Author of Covid Curveball, the 2020 Los Angeles Dodgers World Championship Season

Baseball and BBQ Episode #102: Joey Machado from Blues Hog & Tim Neverett, Author of Covid Curveball, the 2020 Los Angeles Dodgers World Championship Season

Episode 102 is filled with baseball, barbecue, and a contest for the greatest podcast audience ever.

Joey Machado is a marketing guru and the barbecue community is lucky he is a part of it.  In part two of our interview we learn more about Blues Hog BBQ and Gateway Drum Smokers, but it humorously begins with a Seinfeld TV show reference.  From there we learn why Tim Scheer is a genius and has Joey's, as well as the barbecue industry's ultimate respect.  Joey provides exceptional information, but more importantly he is a prime example of how barbecue people are some of the friendliest you will ever meet.

Tim Neverett spent last year like most of America, unsure of what each day would bring during a pandemic.  The difference though is that most of America does not work as a television and radio play-by-play announcer for the Los Angeles Dodgers.  In 2020, the major league baseball season, usually a 162 game marathon became a 60 game sprint played in front of empty/cardboard cutout filled stands.  Each day Tim chronicled his time with the team as well as what was happening in this country outside of baseball.  The abbreviated 60 game season was hard fought and ultimately won by the Dodgers.  Covid Curveball:  An Inside View of the 2020 Los Angeles Dodgers World Championship Season is Tim's in-depth look at one of the strangest baseball season's ever, and we were lucky to have the chance to discuss this great book.

Elda's Kitchen was featured in episode 97 as we interviewed co-owner, Brie Blackford.  They are now sponsoring a contest specifically for our listeners.  We wish everyone good luck.

In-between the two interviews Leonard tells us about a special day he spent at Yankee Stadium.  Without spoiling it, the day included Tino Martinez and Mariano Rivera.

We conclude the show with the beautiful song, "Ace and Bobo" from the musician, Dave Dresser and the poet, Shel Krakofsky.

Baseball and BBQ Episode #96: Chef, George Georgiades Part 2 and Andrew Maraniss, author of Singled Out: The True Story of Glenn Burke

Baseball and BBQ Episode #96: Chef, George Georgiades Part 2 and Andrew Maraniss, author of Singled Out: The True Story of Glenn Burke

Episode #96 confirms what we always say, "Baseball and BBQ goes as perfectly together as chocolate and peanut butter in a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup."

George Georgiades is back for the second half of our wonderfully entertaining conversation and he appears to have saved the best for last.  Part two will have you thoroughly entertained as we hear more stories from a chef who specializes in Greek food, but has also opened a restaurant specializing in pizza.  This restaurant is in addition to his many locations for Eons.  Listen as George talks about his many adventures in the restaurant business, some working out better than others.  He also shares a story of a television cooking show contest in which he broke his own rule of "KISS" and the results were not in his favor.  This is one of the interviews which, when it ends, you will wish there was a part three.

Andrew Maraniss is the author of Singled Out:  The True Story of Glenn Burke.  As a New York Times best-selling author, Andrew writes books that make you think, feel, and learn. Glenn Burke was the first openly gay Major League Baseball player, who, while not coming out publicly until his playing days were over, his sexuality was known to his teammates, family, and friends.  He also was the inventor of the high five.  We had the pleasure of discussing this book and learning about a player who made his biggest impact off the field.  Andrew is a Visiting Author at Vanderbilt University Athletics and a contributor to ESPN’s TheUndefeated.com. He has appeared on several national media programs, including NPR’s All Things Considered and Only A Game, NBC’s Meet The Press, MSNBC’s Morning Joe, ESPN’s Keith Olbermann Show, ESPN Radio’s The Sporting Life, and the SEC Network’s Paul Finebaum Show

Baseball debates are usually fun and on this episode Jeff and Leonard bring in friend of the show, Gary Mack to be, what we hope is an impartial judge.  Listen and tell us your opinions.

We conclude the show with the beautiful song, "Ace and Bobo" from the musician, Dave Dresser and the poet, Shel Krakofsky.

Baseball and BBQ Episode #75: Chad Ward, Part 2 and Jason Turbow, author of They Bled Blue

Baseball and BBQ Episode #75: Chad Ward, Part 2 and Jason Turbow, author of They Bled Blue

It's episode 75 and you ain't seen nothing yet.

Chad Ward is an incredible story teller and if you thought part 1 of our interview was fun and entertaining then be prepared to enjoy part 2 as much, or dare we say, even more.  Chad is the director of marketing for Traeger Pellet Grills as well as the pitmaster and owner of the award winning, Whiskey Bent BBQ competition team.  Listen to all these stories and then try to decide which is your favorite.  We love them all and hope you will too. We certainly think Chad is an outstanding guest.

Jason Turbow is the author of They Bled Blue: Fernandomania, Strike-Season Mayhem, and the Weirdest Championship Baseball Had Ever Seen: The 1981 Los Angeles Dodgers. There are some teams that become part of baseball lore with stories that are endlessly entertaining. Whether you think you know all there is to know about this team and their miraculous season or are just learning about it, this book is an an absolutely delightful read and Jason is another incredible guest. You will love the stories, but find it hard to believe it all took place during one strike shortened baseball season.

Please visit the Pandemic Baseball Book Club,   https://www.pbbclub.com/ to find many of the wonderful books we have featured as well as some additional swag you may want to purchase.
We once again conclude the show with the beautiful song, "Baseball Always Brings You Home" from the musician, Dave Dresser and the poet, Shel Krakofsky.
