You Don't Have to Do This, Paul (2024 Minnesota Twins Spring Training No. 2)

The Minnesota Twins are still about a month away from playing baseball games that count, but now the spring training games are in full swing. David and Dan discuss the latest roster moves -- including a trade for a righthanded-hitting outfielder -- and all the off-field updates, including the Pohlad's latest attempts to explain why they aren't spending money and the changes in the radio booth. They also look around the MLB to talk about the controversial pants as well as the new rule changes. Finally, they wrap up with the convergence of two great passions: baseball and board games, which, according to reports, have found their way into the Twins' locker room this spring. Thanks for listening, and go Twins!

Those Darn Character Clauses (Joe Mauer Hall of Fame Announcement, 2024)

It's finally here, the moment so many Minnesota Twins fans hoped would come: Joe Mauer is headed to the Baseball Hall of Fame. David, Dan and Hoges discuss the announcement that the Minnesota native is among the three players inducted in the Class of 2024 with a special offseason episode of MN for the Win. They discuss Mauer's candidacy while also looking at the Hall more generally: Should there be a 10-vote limit? How much should character play into it? Will players of the steroids era ever get in? And perhaps most important: When will Royce Lewis get the call from the Hall?
Look for more episodes in one more month as the boys ramp up to watch what should be another entertaining Minnesota Twins season in 2024. Thanks for listening, and go Twins.

They start with a discussion of the retirement of longtime broadcaster Dick Bremer and share their thoughts on what to make the of payroll reduction and the lack of a TV deal for next season. Then, they look back at their season predictions ventured back in March, followed by a a season-long version of their usual segments, with discussions about Rocco Baldelli, their favorite moments of the season and the MLB rule changes. Finally, they wrap up with a shorter look toward 2024 and what changes might still be coming.

Can't Blame the Shadows (ALDS Game 4 Wrap, 10/11)

Can't Blame the Shadows (ALDS Game 4 Wrap, 10/11)

With that, the Minnesota Twins season is over. An exciting ALDS Game 4 does not go the Twins' way, as they lose 3-2 at Target Field to the Houston Astros. David, Hoges and Dan recap the game's highs, lows and lulls, many of which feature the letdown moments of the Twins' offense. They discuss the two home runs from Eddie Julien and Royce Lewis, and they also dissect the choices Rocco Baldelli made as he handled the pitching staff and one key pinch-hitting scenario. They zero in on the bottom of the sixth as the key moment of the game, and they try to muster some hope for next season amid the sadness of losing in the ALDS. After the World Series, they will be back with their season recap. Thanks for listening throughout the season, and go Twins.

The Smell of October Baseball (ALDS Game 2 Wrap, 10/8)

Fall is in the Minnesota air, and the Twins are headed back home with a split in Houston, which gives them a chance to clinch the ALDS this week at home. David, Dan and Hoges recap Minnesota's 6-2 win over the Houston Astros in Game 2 on Sunday, a resounding response led by starting pitcher Pablo Lopez and former Astros shortstop Carlos Correa. The boys recap the game inning by inning and highlight the work Minnesota's righties did against Houston pitcher Framber Valdez, including Kyle Farmer's first-ever postseason hit. They also praise Rocco Baldelli's feel for the game as he handled pinch hitting and the bullpen. Looking forward, they wonder whether Christian Vazquez will get a chance behind the plate, and they make their Puckett's Picks selections for Game 3. Thanks for listening, and go Twins.

The Least Best Chance to Win (ALDS Game 1 Wrap, 10/7)

The Least Best Chance to Win (ALDS Game 1 Wrap, 10/7)

For the first time this postseason the Minnesota Twins lose a game, falling 6-4 to the Houston Astros in Game 1 of the American League Divisional Series. David and Dan recap the game, which featured a too-little-too-late comeback from the Twins, who squandered some early chances to get to Justin Verlander. They pick apart the way Rocco Baldelli managed the bullpen (though with a mostly favorable review), and they highlight two fielding plays: one by Alex Kirilloff and another by Ryan Jeffers and Carlos Correa. While neither is in panic mode, both David and Dan wonder what the lineup will look like against lefthanded starter Framber Valdez in Game 2, and they make their Puckett's Picks selections with an eye toward the question: Will anyone actually play the whole game? Thanks for listening, and go Twins.

How Fun is This? (AL Wild Card Series Game 2 Wrap, 10/4)

How Fun is This? (AL Wild Card Series Game 2 Wrap, 10/4)

For the first time since 2002, the Minnesota Twins clinched a playoff series victory, taking the second game of a best-of-three against the Toronto Blue Jays. They advance now to face the Houston Astros on Saturday in the ALDS. David, Hoges and Dan discuss the game against the Blue Jays and look forward to the series against the Astros. They discuss the good start from Sonny Gray and the brilliant performance by the Twins' bullpen, including another great 8th inning from Griffin Jax and a shut-down 9th from Jhoan Duran. They also question the decision by Toronto's manager to pull former Twins starter Jose Berrios in the fourth inning, and they praise the work of Gray and Carlos Correa in getting a key pick-off at second to end one of the Blue Jays' many scoring chances. They also look toward the next series and wonder whether Bailey Ober has a spot on this roster and whether there might be any other changes to the roster. They also reflect on the many comments from Twins players about the significance of the moment, and they dare to hope that this is still early in a Minnesota playoff run. Thanks for listening, and go Twins.

A Geologist in Right Field (Athletics Series Recap, 9/26-9/28)

A Geologist in Right Field (Athletics Series Recap, 9/26-9/28)

With the AL Central Division title already secured, the Minnesota Twins won two of three at home against the Oakland Athletics, and they did so while trying out new lineup combinations and treating pitchers very, very carefully. David and Dan discuss how the Twins are using this time to prepare for the postseason, which begins after one final regular-season series this weekend. They look at the highlights on the field, like Matt Wallner's grand slam and Andrew Stevenson's dash around the bases, and they also look to the decisions Rocco is making now and how those might change in the Wild Card games. Dan wants to know whether Byron Buxton could return and be effective in centerfield, while David wonders whether Rocco will change his pinching ways in the postseason. They also look around the league at a series of milestones for coaches and players, both former and current. Thanks for listening, and go Twins.

Nothing But Belief (Angels Series Recap, 9/22-9/24)

Nothing But Belief (Angels Series Recap, 9/22-9/24)

It is official: The Minnesota Twins are the 2023 AL Central champions. Hoges joins Dan (and so, for a bit, does David) to discuss the clinching series and then all the questions still to be settled over the next week. Will Royce Lewis play? Will (ahem) Joey Gallo have a roster spot? And who will pitch out of the bullpen? They also praise the work of the front office nabbing guys like Kyle Farmer and Willi Castro, as well as their patience and steadfastness with Max Kepler and Jorge Polanco, even when they were ineffective or injured for significant stretches this year. They also praise Rocco Baldelli (happy birthday, sir) for his management this series and his pre-celebration pep talk, and then they look around the league at a quirky pitching matchup and the wild card races. Thanks for listening, and go Twins.

All the Angles in New York City (Reds Series Recap, 9/18-9/20)

All the Angles in New York City (Reds Series Recap, 9/18-9/20)

Despite injuries to Carlos Correa and Royce Lewis, the Minnesota Twins go to Cincinnati and take two from the playoff-seeking Reds, and they do so with a dramatic comeback in Game 3. Combined with some help from the Kansas City Royals, the Twins' magic number to clinch the AL Central Division is now down to one, and by the time they take the field again they might have already clinched. David and Dan, reunited after a couple episodes apart, try not to get too far ahead of themselves, though David still insists the Twins could earn the No. 2 seed and avoid the Wild Card Round. Dan is not convinced that both the supposed home run robberies in this series actually counted as such, and he is salty about the way Jayce Tingler handled Lewis in Game 2. David wonders who might be the third starter in a playoff series while also maintaining that Byron Buxton is a huge question mark heading into the playoffs. Thanks for listening, and go Twins!

Cinderella or Pumpkin (Rays Series Recap, 9/11-9/13)

Cinderella or Pumpkin (Rays Series Recap, 9/11-9/13)

The Minnesota Twins get one win against the visiting Tampa Bay Rays and they seem quite content with just the one, losing a series to one of the best teams in the Majors. Dan and Hoges discuss the myriad questions this team has surrounding its roster the rest of the way, including whether players like Nick Gordon, Brock Stewart, Byron Buxton and Chris Paddack will find their way on a potential playoff roster. They also look back at the decisions Rocco Baldelli made during the series and the handful of memorable moments from players like Royce Lewis (who else?), Willi Castro and Max Kepler, who continues to prove his doubters wrong. The listeners have nearly locked up a season victory in Puckett's Picks, but Dan is holding out just a little bit of hope and turns in a different direction heading into the four-game series in Chicago. Thanks for listening, and go Twins.

    Max Kepler's Self-Portrait (Mets Series Recap, 9/8-9/10)

For the fourth time in five series, the Minnesota Twins won more than their opponents did, taking two of three from the visiting New York Mets. With their lead in the AL Central Division at 7.5 games, David and Dan are both feeling pretty good, though they have lots of questions about who exactly will be on a postseason roster and in what capacity. They discuss the good pitching outings, especially the one from Pablo Lopez, as well as the oddities on the base paths and in the announcing booth. There is much to be said about Max Kepler's big play in Game 2 as well as how Rocco Baldelli handled the end of Game 3. They also wonder a bit about the team's Roberto Clemente Award nominee, and they look forward to a tight finish in the race for Puckett's Picks. Thanks for listening, and go Twins!

Rocco's Beautiful Mind (Guardians Series Recap, 9/4-9/6)

In the most important series of the season, the Minnesota Twins rise to the occasion, taking two of three from the Guardians in Cleveland. David and Dan discuss the bizarre but thrilling first game of the series and the big moments in Game 2, which had both of them feeling better about the Twins' chances of winning the division than at any previous point this season. They discuss the big hits from Royce Lewis and Donovan Solano as well as the less important home runs from Joey Gallo and Kyle Farmer. David wonders which remaining home series he should attend, while Dan asks whether the Twins would actually consider a piggyback in the playoffs. They also look around the league at achievements by an Astros all-star and a Phillies slugger. Thanks for listening, and go Twins!

On the Back of the Piggyback (Rangers Series Recap, 8/24-8/27)

It finally happened: The Minnesota Twins used two starters in one game, and it helped them to a comeback win in Game 4 that gave them a series win (3 out of 4) against the visiting Texas Rangers. Hoges fills in for David to discuss the series with Dan, and he has plenty of praise for Royce Lewis, who came through with clutch hits throughout the series. Dan heaps his praise on Dallas Keuchel, who set aside his ego and gave the Twins five key innings in Game 4. They both are impressed with the work of the bullpen (aside from Griffin Jax's Game 3 effort) and they see plenty to like about the hitting, which has turned it around in a big way since the All-Star Break. They also discuss the shenanigans of Game 2, and then they look around the league at news about Shohei Ohtani and Terry Francona. Finally, they look forward to the next series: a three-game showdown against the second-place Cleveland Guardians at Target Field. Thanks for listening, and go Twins.

A Roomba That Got Lost (Pirates Series Recap, 8/18-8/20)

A Roomba That Got Lost (Pirates Series Recap, 8/18-8/20)

With their ace on the mound in Game 3 ... er, Game 1 ... er, Game 2 ... the Minnesota Twins win two of three against the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates and the process extend their lead in the AL Central Division to a season-high six games with 12 series left in the regular season. David and Dan discuss the excellent starts by Pablo Lopez, Sonny Gray and Dallas Keuchel, the last of whom was the focus of much dismissal (by these two hosts included) after his last performance for the Twins. David and Dan both have criticisms for Rocco Baldelli's handling of the series, specifically the loss in Game 2. Dan wonders how much the Twins are willing to tinker with the 40-man roster, while David wants to know whether Byron Buxton's eventual return will really include time in center field. They look around the league at some savvy fielding plays by the Blue Jays and Angels, a hot streak from a Mariners' outfielder and an emotional apology from Mets star Pete Alonso. Thanks for listening, and go Twins!

When in Doubt, Don't Swing (Tigers Series Recap, 8/8-10)

When in Doubt, Don't Swing (Tigers Series Recap, 8/8-10)

The Minnesota Twins play a stinker of a series, and David is back on the podcast with plenty of firepower. He has a couple questions for Rocco Baldelli, and he also offers his thoughts on the career of new Twins Hall of Famer Joe Mauer. Dan offers further defense of the Twins' great, and he also defends the changes he made to his grading rubric. They discuss the shortcomings of the offense and bullpen in particular that contributed to Minnesota's losing three of four to the Detroit Tigers, and they wonder who, if anyone, can infuse this offense with some life and this team with some hope. They also look around at many headlines from Major League Baseball, including a friendly bet between brothers that might not have been the smartest idea. Thanks for listening, and go Twins.

The Silence of Carlos Correa (D'Backs Series Recap, 8/4-6)

The Silence of Carlos Correa (D'Backs Series Recap, 8/4-6)

Back again for a second straight episode, Hoges spot-starts with Dan to discuss one of the more exciting series of the year for the Minnesota Twins, who swept the Arizona Diamonbacks at Target Field for the third straight time. Hoges has nothing but praise for Game 3 hero Matt Wallner after watching the game in person, while Dan gives credit to Max Kepler for the stretch he had not just this weekend but the last month. They devote a special segment to the (Twins) Hall of Fame induction of Minnesotan Joe Mauer and make the case for his enshrinement in Cooperstown. They also dive into Rocco Baldelli's use of the designated hitter and whether, just maybe, Carlos Correa isn't healthy. Finally, they discuss the boxing match between Jose Ramirez and Tim Anderson, and then they make their picks for the next series at Detroit. Thanks for listening, and go Twins.

Greasy Wins on Sweaty Nights (Cardinals Series Recap, 8/1-8/3)

Greasy Wins on Sweaty Nights (Cardinals Series Recap, 8/1-8/3)

After being swept the series before, the Minnesota Twins take two of three against the St. Louis Cardinals in games that weren't always beautiful -- but they were effective. Filling in for David, Andrew Hoganson praises the work of Matt Wallner, who again comes through with some key plays for the Twins. Hoges also asks why Rocco Baldelli isn't giving Ryan Jeffers more time at catcher, while Dan again brings up the silliness of the review process, which this time went well for Rocco. Dan also asks for Hoges' take on the glut of lefties and the lack of moves at the trade deadline. They look back at last season and consider whether this team is in a better spot than those Twins, and they look around the league at a solid no-hitter and a trade that almost was. Plus, they discuss the weird situation with the towel following Jhoan Duran's wild pitch in the final moments of the series. Thanks for listening, and go Twins!

Rocco's Managerial Nightmare (White Sox Series Recap, 7/21-23)

Rocco's Managerial Nightmare (White Sox Series Recap, 7/21-23)

In dramatic fashion, the Minnesota Twins finished off a sweep of the Chicago White Sox, giving them three sweeps in their last five series. David and Dan look back at the dramatic finish to Game 3 as well as the exciting comeback in Game 2 and the thundering start to Game 1. They examine the play of Byron Buxton, the down series for Eddie Julien and the way pink eye impacted the way Rocco Baldelli was able to manage the series. They praise the play of Alex Kirilloff and the steady presence Carlos Correa has been the last couple of weeks, and they look forward to how this roster might change when Jorge Polanco and (eventually) Royce Lewis and Nick Gordon return. Thanks for listening, and go Twins!

Max Kepler's Boyish Smile (Mariners Series Recap, 7/17-20)

Max Kepler's Boyish Smile (Mariners Series Recap, 7/17-20)

The Minnesota Twins wrap up their post-All Star Break road trip with a 2-2 series split against the Seattle Mariners, and much credit goes to their trio of left-handed hitters in Eddie Julien, Alex Kirilloff and Max Kepler. David and Dan discuss their roles in the two victories, as well as the notable struggles of superstar(?) Byron Buxton. Dan asks whether Sonny Gray's best days are behind him, and David ponders the roster shuffling that might be necessarily to keep both Julien and Jorge Polanco when he returns sometime in the next week. They bring up the difference it has made having Carlos Correa atop the lineup card, and they wonder whether yet again Rocco Baldelli got a little cute with his managerial decisions in Game 3. Finally, in their look around the league, they give credit to Rob Manfred for his significant decisions as MLB Commissioner. Thanks for listening, and go Twins!
