Representing Trans Stories with Miles Borrero

Representing Trans Stories with Miles Borrero

Jade chats to writer and yoga teacher Miles Borrero about publishing his memoir Beautiful Monster: A Becoming, and the importance of seeing positive trans stories in media and literature.

Throughout his many lives, Miles Borrero has survived fronting a Latin rock band, riding horses competitively, acting on various stages across the US, and nannying a six-year-old. He has been Catholic, Jewish, and a frequent guest at Krishna’s house, and has lived life as a boy, a girl, a woman, a man, and something in between. Now a senior yoga teacher who leads retreats and trainings all over the world, Miles is passionate about dismantling the systems within ourselves that keep us small. He lives in New York with his sweetheart and their two adorable dogs.

Session 10 Colorism: Embrace All Skin Tones

    Your Host: Shyra DeJuan

Is challenging you to be open to change your internalized thoughts about light skin and dark skin. Correct your behavior as it relates to colorism! If you are an Ally for people of color know that your awareness matters!  We have all been guilty of judging ourselves or others based upon skin tone. Embrace All Skin Tones! When we are real together we heal together. It is time to practice a mind elevation and shift on our world view relating to people of color! We must see the beauty of dark skin, we must see the beauty of naturally kinky and curly hair, we must see the beauty of our full lips and wide noses. We must embrace our cultural natural beauty! The brain wash and white wash can no longer separate and divide us from loving ourselves. If you are an ally for the black community, understand that dark skin does not mean bad or evil or violent! We all exude the same peace, comfort and love! Please listen and celebrate Black History month!!

Translation: The Pains and Gains of Communication – with Esther Allen

Translation: The Pains and Gains of Communication – with Esther Allen

    **Who You will Hear**

Guest: Esther Allen (Writer, translator. Professor at City University of New York)

Co-host: Luna Tang (Cloud Service Delivery Manager at Klopotek)

Co-host: Dwayne Parris (Senior Consultant at Klopotek)

Translation has long been an indispensable part of the world of publishing and literature.

In this episode, we are joined by Esther Allen, writer, translator, and a professor at City University of New York.

The conversation begins with Esther recounting how she crossed her line with Spanish and French in her early childhood and youthful years. She then explains to us, from the perspective of a literary scholar, the linguistic landscape in the context of globalization, the dynamics of English and other dominant languages, and the importance of language legacy and linguistic diversity. Many interesting topics are sprinkled throughout: the difficulty of transplanting humor to another language, the “terminal speakers” of an endangered language, how a language becomes an “invasive species,” and why and how to attribute value to a language we don’t speak, etc.

For more information about Esther and her translation work, please visit her website. If you'd like to go further into the world of translation, check out the 24 programs available through the online conference Translating the Future, which Esther co-curated with Allison Markin Powell at the Center for the Humanities at the City University of New York Graduate Center. And to enjoy a cornucopia of translated writing from across the globe, you're warmly invited to visit Words Without Borders.

Expanding Access to Long-Acting ART in Europe

In this episode, Stephane De Wit, MD, PhD, discusses the benefits of long-acting antiretroviral therapy (ART) for migrant populations in Europe—and specifically in Belgium. He also addresses some of the challenges of accessing and following up with those populations.

Dr De Wit describes some of the ways that the Belgian healthcare system is set up to improve access to ART. He then explains some of the disease parameters for considering expanding the use of long-acting ART to patients who are not virologically suppressed. Finally, Dr De Wit offers some thoughts about the future of long-acting ART to migrant populations in Belgium.
