    103. Return Of The Jedi

After 103 episodes, we've finally done a Star Wars. Naturally, we've done everybody's favourite of the original trilogy: RETURN OF THE JEDI.  Teddy bear frenzy!  Also, Rob has some rather exciting news ...

    Episode 42: Body Heat

    Episode 42: Body Heat

This week on Remainders, we talk the 1981 neo-noir Body Heat. Written and directed by Lawrence Kasdan – around the same time as writing Raiders of the Lost Ark and the Empire Strikes Back – Body Heat was inspired by Double Indemnity and launched the careers of William Hurt and Kathleen Turner. Ned (Hurt) is a hapless lawyer who falls hard for the sultry but married Matty (Turner). Their affair turns dark though when they initiate a plot to kill her husband – with the potential to reap his fortune. A throwback to 40s crime noir, Body Heat feels especially relevant today as society reevaluates the eroticism in films of the 80s and 90s.

Other topics include new pieces from Darren’s collection and his upcoming exhibit at La Luz De Jesus Gallery, some first time Remainders swag available for purchase, a visit to the Hollywood Museum, what we’re watching on TV these days, Ebert vs. Kael, favorite William Hurt and Kathleen Turner performances, and the enduring brilliance of traumatic 1980s kids movies.

YNFA 026: Raiders of the Lost Ark, or I’m Face Meltingly Hot for Teacher

Slap on that fedora and crack your whip, cuz it’s time we MEET STEVEN SPIELBERG—OK MAYBE WE JUST SAW HIM LIVE ON STAGE—WITH LIN-MANUEL MIRANDA—BUT HE SAID HE LOVED US at a special theatrical screening Raiders of the Lost Ark at the United Palace in Washington Heights. Is Bryce a true romantic for going to see Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in the theater multiple times with Randall? How did Dayna manage not to watch this movie until her 20s—and not see Temple of Doom as of this recording? Who is everyone’s bigger first film crush, Harrison Ford or Karen Allen? And can we just say f@ck you Nazi monkey? Honestly, we have too many feelings about this film to give you too many answers.

SPR Watch Party - Star Wars: Episode VII With Daniel DiManna From The GNP

Brace yourself: SPR is trying something new.

That's right, Some Patches Required — ever a bastion of consistency — is shaking things up. This time around, Zak and Aaron invited The Godzilla Novelization Project founder (and elder brother to Aaron) Daniel DiManna to talk about "Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens."

Spoilers abound as these three affable chaps talk about how they felt the first time they sat down to view the first chapter of the last chapter of the so-called Skywalker Saga, how they felt after a rewatch, and how the subsequent movies mercilessly eradicated any trace of hope introduced in "The Force Awakens." Did that sentence make sense? No? Well, neither does the sequel trilogy!

But, fear not, faithful listener. Our intrepid hosts will return to video games in the next installment.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
Our eighth consecutive trek through the Forbidden Zone finds us excavating, of all places, an overgrown San Francisco which is, you guessed it!, infested with murderous primates. (You'd think we'd have learned our lesson by now but...alas...) Listen to our introduction as we introduce a new recurrent segment of the show: the Blue Plate Special. In this initial offering, we load up on a trio of neo-noirs (Body Heat, Trouble in Mind, and Reminiscence) that has us pondering both past modes of the form and how it might exactly realize itself in the years to come. Upon finally arriving to Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, yet another exploration of chimpanzee-on-human violence is had, this time in relation to how this new age of CGI at once adds to and subtracts from the potential of the series that refuses to go gentle into that good night. Feel free to skip to 2:04:34 for the beginning of our audio commentary. S04E06: Wyatt Earp

    S04E06: Wyatt Earp
The good news is, Dennis Quaid is great in Wyatt Earp! The bad news is...the "in Wyatt Earp" part, as the film is interminable, perfused with beige Costnerian self-regard, and did we mention how long it is? It's long, which I guess is what happens when you cast literally half of SAG. Tom Sizemore, the poor man's Tom Sizemore, apparitions of fatherliness, and the endless wait for arrival at the corralworks factory all detract from a fascinating steampunk performance from Quaid in an all-new Quaid In Full. ...about Solo: A Star Wars Story (1992)

...about Solo: A Star Wars Story (1992)

A Star Wars movie that is both fun and funny? Say whaaaat???!!!

Directed by Ron Howard. Starring Alden Ehrenreich, Woody Harrelson, Donald Glover, Emilia Clarke, Thandie Newton, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Paul Bettany, Jon Favreau and Joonas Suotamo.

How is the world wrong about this film?

From Bryan: Remember when Star Wars fans wanted a million Star Wars movies. As a kid you wanted to see a new one every year. Guess what? It happened in 2018 and no one showed up. SOLO doesn’t break any rules or add anything new to the franchise, BUT it is hella entertaining!! Alden Ehrenreich and Donald Glover don’t just do imitations of Han and Lando, they put new life into them. Sadly this was an undeserved box office failure. Grab the family, grab the popcorn and watch a Hollywood sequel that isn’t total braindead garbage. Oh and did I mention it’s not three hours long? Praise the heavens!!!

Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018) w/ Glen Fredericks

In this week's episode, Craig and Geoff are joined by Newcastle's biggest, and self professed luckiest, Star Wars fan Glen Fredericks. From his origins of a Star Wars inspired cafe to his involvement as a member of the 501st, Glen is the most qualified to talk a Star Wars film. Together the three chat the journey of a Han Solo origins story on both TV and film,  the bumpy journey of this film and the incredible effort to get the film to screen.

Ep 22: Battle of the Buzzers

Ep 22: Battle of the Buzzers

    Shimmy on down, Skywalkers!

We’re cutting the bullsh!t because we have A LOT to get to this week! You may have heard us preparing for a trivia competition called [insert Kristian Harloff voice here] The Movie Trivia Schmoedown! If you haven’t watched it yet, GET OUT!

Seriously! GTFO because hosts Alyce and Laura are going to spoil* it all in your earholes right now! We can’t give you timestamps to avoid because there’s really no avoiding it in this episode. Go watch the match HERE before you listen so you don’t get spoiled.

There’s Star Wars news pouring out of the Austin Film Festival’s orifices and it’s like our friend Maria always says: “I’ve got time for that!” Except it’s the opposite. Benioff and Weiss don’t have time for Star Wars. As if that’s a real thing. On the other end of that, screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan sounds like he  does have time for it, but he’s giving Star Wars the boot.

Naomi Ackie, who plays Jannah in The Rise of Skywalker, continues to be the greatest person on the planet, as proven by her recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, as well as everything about her.

Alyce’s future ex-husband Ewan McGregor did an interview with Men’s Journal and every Star Wars news outlet is confused apparently. But don’t worry, we actually read the article so we’ll set the record straight.

Finally, we’ve got a voicemail from our friend Maria and a special guest and special props for a speed round of Star Wars Trivial Pursuit (btw sorry for the some of the audio issues in trivia - Alyce and our guest tried to share a mic/stand and there was a pretty severe height discrepancy).

    Stephen King Special

    Stephen King Special
We celebrate Halloween with this bumper edition podcast looking at the films of STEPHEN KING. Simon and Keith are joined by Mike Tack and Clive Ashenden to talk about their favourite and least favourite Stephen King adaptions. As there are so many adaptions of his work, we decided to look at horror films that got shown at the cinema, so we ruled out all the mini series and sequels. (Sorry) The films under discussion are THE SHINING, THE DEAD ZONE, FIRESTARTER, MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE, MISERY, THE LAWNMOWER MAN, DREAMCATCHER, and THE MIST. Movie Heaven Movie Hell is a show where filmmakers Simon Aitken (BLOOD + ROSES, POST-ITS, MODERN LOVE) and Keith Eyles (FEAR VIEW, DRIVEN INSANE, CROSSED LINES) go through the A-Z of directors. Simon and Keith talk about their favourite and least favourite film from that director's body of work.
