What do you do about it?  Today I am giving a few tips to help you lean into that feeling of loneliness as a performing and or creative artist. Like many of us, we run from it, and run directly into a poor decision or not so great situation simply because we are afraid of being lonely. So let's lean in!

If You Are Not Where You Think You “Should” Be…

If You Are Not Where You Think You “Should” Be…

On this episode of the Liberated AF Podcast, Jenna continues the conversation from Episode 5 - The External Body Mirrors the Internal Body. She fast forwards in time to now - sharing how the internal liberation journey has manifested externally over the past 5+ years of healing. To illustrate this, she shares a recent activating experience around her body and how she navigated through it. The whole point for you is… when you lean in to the reality of where you are, instead of “should-ing” all over yourself, you can explore what’s actually true, what medicine the reality right now has to offer, and where you get to go from here. Where you are is perfect and the medicine is here now.

You can connect further with Jenna on her website as well as Instagram. She offers various group programs, experiences, and intimate, high-level 1:1 Liberate Mentorship. Check out the platforms listed above to see what she has coming up in her world!

EP81: Dr. Samantha Dodson on women, systems, and leaning in vs out

EP81: Dr. Samantha Dodson on women, systems, and leaning in vs out

It is always refreshing to be reminded that it is not easy to learn communication skills, and leaning in vs. out in the workplace is easier if you can be authentically yourself. Dr. Samantha Dodson and I talk about these concepts as well as the importance of having relationships that can help you grow. Samantha Dodson, PhD received her doctorate in Management from the Eccles School of Business at the University of Utah. She researches how employees’ cognitions and emotions affect their interpersonal outcomes as regards interpersonal distress (e.g. discrimination), social effects of gender stereotypes, and understanding suffering at work. Her undergraduate degree is from Brigham Young University. She is currently at the Montalbano Centre for Responsible Leadership Development in the Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia. She has written on why women don't lead. Episode 90: Advance Your Career with Kelli Thompson

Episode 90: Advance Your Career with Kelli Thompson
Welcome to Kelli Thompson! Kelli is a speaker, coach, author, and HR executive who left the corporate world to pursue her passion for helping women advance their careers. She is driven to help more women make it to the board room, advance their careers, and bring their best, most authentic selves to the office. Today we’re going to be focusing on talking with Kelli about the very important topic of salary negotiation. Kelli’s career started in banking, where in her journey in HR and leadership development she noticed that most of leadership were men. She found joy as an HR executive in helping people figure out paths to develop their careers. She then worked for a tech company where once again she found joy in helping with career development. She liked that so much so that she worked for a consultant who specialized in career development and broke out on her own to do one-on-one leadership coaching -- which also included less travel. We asked Kelli her thoughts on Lean In and how she feels about women’s journey into the boardroom. Kelli agreed with us that the “do it all” idea can burn women out -- especially since women tend to take on more unpaid and unpromotable administrative work at work and take on more at home. We all agreed that being an executive of any gender requires a ton of support at home and in life so that you can dump what’s not necessary, doesn’t give joy, and you need to delegate and create boundaries. In order to grow in the executive ranks, Kelli asks us how can we show up and do what we want to do without feeling resentful. We ask Kelli how she coaches a burned out person who wants to get ahead. She said they usually are ahead -- but that it’s not sustainable. She first asks where in their life they feel most resentful. They eliminate just that and focus on what needs to be addressed so they can focus. We ask about when salary should be discussed in the job search -- up front as early as possible. And salary transparency helps! The issue with salary transparency in the remote first world is that the range is inclusive of all areas, which means that the range can include the salary in Omaha and NYC, which won't be the same. What that does is encourage transparency in the conversation, but also, Kelli says to look up jobs listed locally to know what your range is. And if the range is less than you want, there’s no harm in having an initial conversation and seeing if there is any flexibility. That said, if the job is being upleveled, you want to know where that “lower level” work will go -- it may still sit with you. To get the most out of salary negotiation, you want to talk about what you bring to the company (not your personal needs), the skills you bring, and what the company can get from your skills (increase revenue, lower expense, reduce risk, lead change) in order to demonstrate what you’re asking for. And if the range is more than you were expecting, keep that poker face! Just say, “sounds good” and remember, that initial number is still negotiable. Get what you’re worth! What’s negotiable in a job offer? Probably not the benefits plan, but sometimes you can adjust the boundaries of hybrid/remote situations and often learning and development opportunities. By understanding the benefits packages you’ll know what you can/can’t negotiate. Usually that first offer isn’t the ceiling. You can try for more. The worst thing they can say is no. Good people get hired, promoted, and raises even in a bad economy. Good people also get let go. Show your value and make sure your skills are what your company and other companies need. The best negotiators, even in a down economy, acknowledge the environment and showed what they can bring. The best negotiators are kind, direct, and show their value. Also, don’t forget that we learn a lot about you during the negotiation process, but also you learn a lot about the company by how they behave during the offer process. What does confidence look like in salary negotiations? It looks like trusting yourself.

We talk about how to begin to recognize how creativity wants to move through your system so that it van flow better, the importance of leaning into creative nudges, and importantly ‘mistakes’ in life and in the art studio. She shares her tips for how to conjure flow states and muses about how though many of us are put into boxes as children in terms of who we ‘are’ whether that’s athlete or artist - how we can question that at any time and begin to try the things we love.

I want to share a beautiful review with you that came in last week, it’s from Connie Wyatt

I’d like to invite you all to join our private Facebook group ‘The Creative Genius Family’ a safe space to share about your creative struggles and triumphs and connect in person with other listeners for support & inspiration.

Erin calls herself an escape artist, which i love.

She is an visual artist, graphic designer and the owner of Nu wavegallery in Ellensburg Washington.  Her work is bold and beautifully striking and is most often inspired by the mountains and waters of the pacific northwest. We have a terrific conversation that covers a lot of ground with everything from how to begin to recognize how creativity wants to move through your system so that you can flow through it better to the importance of leaning into creative nudges, and importantly ‘mistakes’ in life and in the art studio. She shares her tips for how to conjure flow states and muses about how though many of us are put into boxes as children in terms of who we ‘are’ whether that’s athlete or artist - how we can question that at any time and begin to try the things we love.

I love that she asked me about what brings me JOY - it was lovely for me to see the answer that bubbled up for me. it ‘s a good question and one we might really benefit from asking ourselves more. Asking ourselves what kinds of feelings we want to feel and then noticing what kinds of feelings we most often feel can give us great clues about what we need to change in our lives. For example maybe as a trauma response to something earlier in our lives, we have become accustomed to feelings of overwhelm and stress, maybe we’ve become masterful at stress and overwhelm, maybe if we look really closely we’ll see that we are the ones setting ourselves up to be in and create situations where we will continue to get to feel those things because that has inadvertently become our comfort zone… but maybe if we had a choice we would want to fill our lives with other feelings. Guess what? There is always a choice. It all depends on what we are focusing on and giving our attention to - and we have control over that.

And I loved erin’s Billboard - be sure to listen to the show to hear it, it comes towards the end.

And there is some lovely homework in this episode that is designed to help you get in touch with and practice connecting with your inner knowing and intuition, which are how creativity speaks to us!

Things Erin and I talk about

-Breaking through the weight of fear doing new kinds of art

-How you have to be the one to give yourself nudges

    -Aphantasia

-What it feels like to have to dumb our creativity down to not upset people in our day to day lives who wish they were being more creative

-How hard it can be to start saying out loud, I am an artist

-How we get put in boxes in school. Artist, academic, sports person and recognizing the box you may have been put in as a child and seeing if you still want to be in it or if you want to get out and how to begin to let yourself out of the box

-How to make time for your art even if you have another full time job

-How to creates space and conjure flow states

-How even ‘mistakes’ in the studio provide some of the best opportunities for creativity

-Creative fuelling - how she feeds her creativity

SB Ep 34: Healing Intergenerational Trauma

SB Ep 34: Healing Intergenerational Trauma

Traumatic events ripple like waves in an ocean, often extending beyond the individual who was directly involved. Intergenerational trauma stems from a reaction to a harmful event which then shapes or creates a lifestyle due to unresolved stored emotions.  This trauma can affect relationships, self-worth, parenting, attachment styles, communication, and overall physical and/or mental health.

This episode is much longer than the usual, and for good reason. We lean in to unpack what generational trauma is, how we have seen it reflected in our lives, societal struggles, and of course methods to heal. In true Soul BBQ fashion, we are lighting the torch on the elephant in the room and taking our power back. You are invited to join us.

Take a deep breath in through your nose, then out through your mouth.

    Let's talk about it!

Stop Taking Things Personally - Here's How #119

that really rubs salt into the wound, can't it? In this episode I share 6 pointers and a bouquet of flowers to help deal with this incredibly annoying comment.

    Living in the Now

    Living in the Now

    Living in the Now

I grew up in a small town surrounded by tractors so it will come as no surprise to you that I listen to country music. Now don’t get me wrong I love some DMX and other old school rappers but country music is really how I was raised.

Cody Johnson has a song 'Til You Can't, and he talks about putting things off and having too much on your plate to make time for the things that truly matter. That is the perfect reminder that we need to take action and we need to do it right now. We need to stop waiting to live our lives. We need to make sure that the people in our lives know how much we care. We need to take chances and chase our dreams right now. We need to be present right now.

We need to stop waiting for a special occasion or the perfect moment.

We all do this. We think when I hit a certain landmark everything will be great. WHen I lose 5 pounds, when I get a certain job, when I have a certain amount of money in my bank account. But why are we waiting? Why don’t we live our best lives right now?

We need to wear our diamond jewelry just because it’s a Tuesday.

Sometimes we fill our lives with mundane tasks and to do lists. We overbook our schedules and then we miss out on opportunities.

We forget to be intentional and to live our lives fully in the moment.

What if you knew that you only had a certain time frame left? How would you fill your days? How would you show up as the best version of yourself if you knew that you only had today.

Would you rearrange your schedule and shift your priorities? I guarantee you would. So why do we show up every day and not live the best version of our lives?

So today think for a moment about the best version of you look like? How does she dress? How does she act? How does she treat her family? How does she interact with a stranger on the street? Who does she make time to connect with? How does she make sure that the people in her life know that she cares? How does she take care of herself?

Each day we have the opportunity to create our legacy. Some days it doesn’t feel like that. Some days it feels like we are just trying to make it to bedtime. But you deserve so much more than that. You deserve to be more than surviving.

You deserve to thrive! You deserve to look and feel your best every single day! You deserve to live the life that you want.

If you needed permission to live your life the way you want to - this is it right here!

What step will you take today to make it so that you are the best version of yourself and that you are living your life to the fullest?

    Overcoming Barriers And Resistance

    Overcoming Barriers And Resistance

Many times in life we over complicate things. We get in our own way. We have these ideas that things need to be absolutely perfect. We convince ourselves that we have to have things just right.

I did it to myself in trying to restart this podcast. First I had to think of the perfect comeback episode and then I created even more barriers for myself by creating this distorted vision that I needed to have a new podcast album cover complete with the perfect photo to jump back in.

This was all just resistance - and resistance that I was creating for myself. I was self sabotaging. I was getting in my own way.

It’s perfectly ok to take simple baby steps towards our goals. We don’t have to make giant leap and take on 17 new projects. I constantly need to remind myself of this. Your self worth isn’t wrapped up in how many projects you have. So take a step back and look at the barriers that you are putting in your own way by over complicating your own life. Then dial back a notch or 10. Let yourself enjoy slowing down and simplifying.

    Getting Knocked Down

    Getting Knocked Down

I share my journey because I am right here with you on both a personal growth journey and a professional growth journey.

Sometimes in life we get knocked down - sometimes we have a shift in the way that we thought that our story was going to go; or a pandemic hits; our health changes; we have decision fatigue; we are just completely overwhelmed. It may not even be something completely earth shattering it may be more of a slow slide downhill.

Or sometimes it may feel like the world has been turned completely upside down. But we move through. But we get to decide how we move through. For me I needed some time and space. You know create space for yourself? Well I took my own advice.

In September of 2021 I was literally hit by a car. Me - my actual body.

But this was just one more chapter of my story of feeling knocked down. Life hands us punches all the time and it is what we decide to do with them that matters. Do you let things fester and eat at you? Or do you take things as they come and continue moving forward?

Maybe this was part of what I needed to find my fire again. I had taken a step back from everything to heal and grow but maybe this was the sign that it was time to reclaim my voice, reclaim my power, move forward and share more of my story.

Well that was September and this is November so I guess that spark needed to smolder for a little bit. Personal development can be a roller coaster and I am not here to say this is what happened and now I’m all great again. I’m here still in the messy middle to actually share how we work through things.

So here we go - this is what has been working for me.

I reclaimed my morning routine, a self care plan, a take care of me plan.

I learned about chakras and used essential oils designated for those chakras. My girl Arielle created a perfect set of essential oils to help me find my voice and re-open my heart.

I used meditation to help slow down my overthinking brain.

    I moved my body.

I ate  real food (ok and ice cream).
    I am setting my goals.

I am putting my needs and wants first.

I set hard boundaries for myself. One of the first things that I did was limit social media.

I made time to be alone.

I know that nothing that I am sharing here is absolute rocket science. Nor is any of it a magic answer. What I am saying is that when you are struggling what you really need is to take a minute for yourself and go back to basics. I’m talking Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs

We need to start with our most basic needs. When we have those back in place then we can move forward and keep picking ourselves back up.
