    Summer Camp Options #3

    Summer Camp Options #3

Armando interviews owners or key personnel of more Summer Camp providers.  Find out what these specific providers have available and whether or not their program might be for your child this summer.  Each provider explains what it is that kids and families can expect from their camps.  Also discussed is the ideal recipe for your child’s summer growth consisting of fun and games with the addition of an academic progress program tailor-made for your child's specific needs or requests.  No "cookie-cutter, one-size-fits-all" academic program for you. This summer your child can grow stronger physically, learn new skills or sharpen artistic talents while also making academic progress to be ready for the new school year in the fall.  Help your child avoid the "summer slide" loss of knowledge experienced by so many students over the summer.

Emergency Episode - New Teacher...High Expectations

Emergency Episode - New Teacher...High Expectations

"Jonathan" and Shaun interview John, a new teacher in a crisis situation. As is so often with new teachers under the influence of The Unexamined Education, John struggles mightily with how things could be and rather than turning off his humanity and assuming the children are soulless so that he can get on with delivering essential curriculum, John wants to think about human things.

Oh, you young fool! Change now, while you still can! Don't nurture the human side of education! All that will do is make you realize how inhumane the system is!

COVID Learning Loss with Prof. Thomas Kane

COVID Learning Loss with Prof. Thomas Kane

COVID was a generation-defining global trauma. Though the virus itself hit seniors hardest, the pandemic may have hit young people longest. Learning loss continues to affect young people today. Abdul reflects on the nature of learning loss and its implications for the future of public health interventions. Then he talks to economist Prof. Thomas Kane about the long term impacts of COVID on learning loss and what parents, teachers, and schools can do to catch up.

#91 How to Recover from Learning Loss

#91 How to Recover from Learning Loss

Covid has impacted our kids' education on many levels including learning delays and learning losses.  Although statistics show learning loss across all ages and grades,  graduation rates have stayed stable.  Unfortunately, that means that many high school students are likely graduating with academic deficits.  As a result, those who transition to college are beginning classes at a disadvantage, and students with disabilities who are compounded by learning deficits are even more at risk.  Today I share some strategies that could help mitigate those challenges. I have links to a couple of resources that might help parents and teachers support their students.  You will also get links to some helpful episodes and articles.

    Math Wars

    Math Wars

Jon has to work out some issues he has had throughout his life involving math trauma. Perhaps his whole motivation in becoming who he became is wrapped up into the crisis of math he experienced as a youth. Not to fear, Dr. Rushton makes a special guest appearance to help him through it. The episode is an interesting psychological study.

Shaun has little to say and mainly fills the air with fillers. I miss the days when Jon was the host. You could almost cut Shaun out of these productions, which is probably why he has the host job. Is there such a thing as self-nepotism?

Somehow these guys occasionally attract interesting guests, at least.

The company has also said a Line 5 shutdown would increase fuel prices and harm Southeast Michigan and Ohio refineries that process oil from Line 5. But during a brief shutdown in June (https://www.bridgemi.com/michigan-environment-watch/michigan-judge-orders-temporary-enbridge-line-5-shutdown), gas prices did not noticeably rise." 5 Ways To Encourage a Self-Directed Summer

    5 Ways To Encourage a Self-Directed Summer

School’s out for the summer - now what?

Many parents will have signed their kids up for numerous camps and enrichment experiences by now, making sure that they won’t have to hear the dreaded “I’m bored!” refrain repeated endlessly. That makes sense since kids are often passive receivers - of entertainment that both their technology and many toys that are made for children provide. They are also often passive recipients of education. Most are required to go to a formal school setting whether or not they want to, where they tend to be externally motivated by systems of rewards and punishments to do what adults tell them to do and learn what they’re told to learn and when.

This means that many kids these days don’t have or take as many opportunities to create their own fun or decide what to do with their time as they once did. Furthermore, high-pressure academic environments can leave kids feeling anxious and depressed about where they fall in grade rankings - or that their scores are worth more than they are. Rather than developing a love of learning, these kids can end up developing the false idea that how they “perform” their learning means more than the learning itself.

#040: The Summer Slide: Avoid Learning Loss During Long Breaks

In this episode, I share with you 3 things you should be doing each summer to prevent your child from slipping down the summer slide of learning loss during long breaks. These three things are so critical to brain development and will keep their knowledge intact while they enjoy the summer rest period. The COVID Catch-up Challenge

    The COVID Catch-up Challenge

Many school districts are beginning to see pandemic learning losses greater than they imagined. It’s time to figure out what to next, says Harvard Professor Tom Kane, an economist studying catch-up efforts. He wants districts to be empowered to make the best decision going forward. In his latest research, he’s helping districts determine how to plan for these losses and shares what interventions might provide the most bang for the buck. In this episode, Kane shares troubling information about how these learning losses have the potential to shape the future of education and how what we do now can get learning back on track.

    Amplify SHAUN!

Jon and Shaun jump on the crypto train to try to promote their podcast…not even sure what this episode is about…something like a central authority in education could be problematic. Jon basically defends teachers helping their students cheat on standardized tests in order to protect the kids from the all-knowing central authority. And Shaun just says, “right,” “right,” and “yes!” So educational fraud is okay now? “Right!”

    Dead silence.

Ep 15 Funding Education and Looking for Equitable Outcomes with Dr. Stephen Owens

Ep 15 Funding Education and Looking for Equitable Outcomes with Dr. Stephen Owens

On this episode of The Parley in All Blue, Mark is joined by Dr Stephen Owens from the Georgia Budget and Policy Institute to discuss school funding and its effect on impoverished neighborhoods and students. Dr. Owens is a University of Georgia alumni and is an expert in school funding and budgeting. He  breaks down what exactly is going on with the educational system as far as funding and budgeting but especially in low income areas.

America ranks 12th in the world in reference to education. In the state of Georgia 50% of all the school budget comes from the State funds directly from the State. 43% comes from local property taxes and 7% comes from the government (usually it's from a specific grant, i.e low income students, students with disability, etc) In terms of metropolitan areas Atlanta has the largest income disparity and income inequality. The amount of state funding that's gone into student transportation has gone unchanged in the state of Georgia since Bill Clinton was in office. We've cut 10 Billion dollars from public schools since 2003! Georgia is 1 of only 8 states in the union that doesn't give money/funding specifically to educate students in poverty.

    Highlights from the episode:

    • School Funding
    • Tax Policy
    • Learning Loss Due to COVID
    • Limited Resources in the Education System
    • K-12 Education
