Episode 44 - Back To The Future

Its 2023! There's nothing that says New Years Day like a film based on looking into the past. Currently, this movie has moved up to #30 on the IMDB Top 250 since we froze the list back in 2016, which speaks to how well this movie holds up over time. Back to the Future (1985), directed by Robert Zemeckis.

Before the MCU Iron Man, before Sam Raimi's Spider-Man, even before Roger Corman's Fantastic Four, there was one project that can truly claim to be the very first Marvel feature ever. And that little movie is called Howard the Duck. It was a box office bomb for the ages, but it also has its fans. And one of them is film critic Ashley Walker.

A talking, child-sized waterfowl gets accidentally sucked into our dimension. And there he finds himself in a situation where he has to save the world. Or can he wisecrack himself out of that one? Howard gets help from a young musician, played by Lea Thomson, and from future Oscar winner Tim Robbins.

Podguest Ashley almost surprises themself by how how much they know about this movie. And there are a lot of fun trivia to sink our teeth into. Even now, new stories keep cropping up about Howard the Duck and its disastrous production. And then we haven't even gotten into all of the awful duck puns...

We also discuss Ashley's recently found affection for Doctor Strange, Martin Scorsese versus the Marvel Cinematic Universe and why there even exists a 70mm print of Howard the Duck.

'Back to the Future' Trilogy (featuring Vanessa Taylor)

'Back to the Future' Trilogy (featuring Vanessa Taylor)

Great Scott! It's time for the Crooked Table Podcast to go Back to the Future! We don't need money, fame, or even a flux capacitor to travel through the space-time continuum to discuss this classic. In fact, while we have the Delorean all fired up at 88mph, we'll even look back at director Robert Zemeckis' entire trilogy.

Vanessa Taylor from The Geeky Waffle helps us tackle the original 1985 sci-fi comedy that introduced audiences to Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) and Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd). We'll talk about why the movie is so damn perfect, explore whether it's problematic in today's day and age, and reflect on how Zemeckis and co-writer Bob Gale crafted such an influential trilogy.

So watch out for lightning storms because things are about to get heavy. This episode, it's all about the Back to the Future trilogy! Even if you aren't ready for this episode yet, your kids are going to love it.

    SYNOPSIS

Back to the Future: In this 1980s sci-fi classic, small-town California teen Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) is thrown back into the '50s when an experiment by his eccentric scientist friend Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd) goes awry. Traveling through time in a modified DeLorean car, Marty encounters young versions of his parents (Crispin Glover and Lea Thompson), and must make sure that they fall in love or he'll cease to exist. Even more dauntingly, Marty has to return to his own time and save the life of Doc Brown.

Back to the Future Part II: In this zany sequel, time-traveling duo Marty McFly (Fox) and Dr. Emmett Brown (Lloyd) return from saving Marty's future son from disaster, only to discover their own time transformed. In this nightmarish version of Hill Valley, Marty's father has been murdered and Biff Tannen (Thomas F. Wilson), Marty's nemesis, has profited. After uncovering the secret to Biff's success -- a sports almanac from the future -- Marty and the Doc embark on a quest to repair the space-time continuum.

Back to the Future Part III: In this final chapter, Marty McFly (Fox) obtains a 70-year-old message from the time-traveling Dr. Emmett Brown (Lloyd), in which he informs Marty that he has retired to a small town in the Old West. Marty then finds out that the Doc was murdered shortly after sending the letter. In order to save his friend, Marty will have to travel back in time, disentangle a lovestruck Doc from a local schoolmarm (Mary Steenburgen), and repair the DeLorean -- all while avoiding a posse of gunslingers.

Seriously though...why don't we have Hoverboards yet?  Your hosts are back and ready to ponder this question and many others as they go...Back to the Future...Part II

In this second installment of the McFly saga, Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) and his girlfriend, Jennifer (Elisabeth Shue in this one) are taken far into the future to the year 2015 (!!!) by Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd) to help prevent their future son from committing a crime that could destroy their family!  While they're off doing that, McFly family rival, Biff Tannen (Thomas F. Wilson) has snuck along for the ride and steals the time machine to give a sports almanac from the future to his younger self!  When young Biff uses the almanac to bet and win on sporting events, making him a millionaire, the time lines are skewed and Doc and Marty have to figure out how to fix it and save the 1985 that they belong in!

As a youngster, this installment was Chrysten's favorite...will it still be after this viewing?  Join us and find out!  And don't forget to RATE, REVIEW & SUBSCRIBE!

This movie was a massive hit and spawned two sequels (which we will be covering in later episodes!).  But will our hosts love it?  Or will they make like a tree and get outta here?  Join us and find out!  And don't forget to RATE, REVIEW & SUBSCRIBE!

It’s a classic tale of a duck being transported to another universe and experiencing human life in Cleveland. In this episode we’re revisiting Howard the Duck and trying to determine if nostalgia is really a good thing. Courtney returns to help us figure this one out. She previously joined us for Terminator which is also a movie about someone being transported from another time and place to Earth. We’d love to know what the Citizens think of Howard The Duck - so be sure to send in feedback we can share on a future episode.

A sarcastic humanoid duck is pulled from his homeworld to Earth where he must stop a hellish alien invasion with the help of a nerdy scientist and a cute struggling female rock singer who fancies him.
