    081 - Super Mario Bros. (1993)
In honor of the 35th Anniversary/Public Execution of Mario, we’re talking about the movie that TWO major corporations and pretty much everyone involved in the production wish you would forget. With a bafflingly great cast (Bob Hoskins! John Leguizamo! Dennis Hopper! Samantha Mathis! Mojo Nixon...wait), how could this first-ever live action video game adaptation be a bob-omb? Join us in absolute confusion how a game about throwing fireballs at turtles was turned into a dystopian, anti-fascist, pro-comminist, hyper sexualized, cyberpunk movie!

Raising the Curtain, Lifting the Veil | The Republic, Part I

Bertolt Brecht was the force behind some of the most popular and influential theater of the 20th Century. But he didn't make plays to entertain. He made them to wake people up to the insanity around them.

This episode delves into Brecht's background and work, his philosophy and his legacy... and leads to some surprising places.

This is the first in a sequence inspired by the Allegory of the Cave, from Plato's Republic.

    Jon Cohorn / John Wick

    Jon Cohorn / John Wick

In recent years, few action film franchises have proven to be as intense or as fascinating as John Wick. Fifteen years after Keanu Reeves unplugged from The Matrix, he found the role of a lifetime as an ex-assassin compelled back into an intricate criminal underworld governed by rules and consequence.

We didn’t need a marker to lure Jon Cohorn, writer for Modern Horrors, on to the show to share his love for the 2014 film and its sequels, the latter of which is now currently in theaters. We’ll talk about what separates John Wick from other contemporary action series, why Reeves is such a perfect fit for the role and where we hope to see series director Chad Stahelski and his star take the character next.

Although the death of a puppy kicks off the titular character’s quest for vengeance, John Wick has grown into so much more since becoming the sleeper hit of fall 2014. Now, with this episode under our belts, we can only hope that the podcast ultimately covers that other classic Reeves role, that of Theodore “Ted” Logan sometime soon. Until then, be excellent to each other. Be seeing you.

John Wick synopsis, courtesy of Lionsgate:

When sadistic thugs attack John Wick (Keanu Reeves) — a brilliantly lethal ex-assassin — he hunts them down with the skill and ruthlessness that made him an underworld legend.

Easy & The Critic - #18 "Latin History For Morons"

Easy & The Critic - #18 "Latin History For Morons"
First, this show is closing 25 Feb 2018, so take that in to consideration as you determine our level of expertise or horse shit. Second, we apologize sincerely to Tony Taccone, who directed this play, for both mispronouncing his name, and neglecting to reflect on the impact he's had on American theater. Owe you a cocktail, Tony. Clearly, we're the Morons to whom Mr. Lequizamo is referring. Enjoy!

    Ep.120 Assault On Precinct 13 (1976 Vs. 2005)

    Ep.120 Assault On Precinct 13 (1976 Vs. 2005)
Whether it is for vengeance or to cover up illegal activities, it is going to be a long night for the closing Precinct 13 that none may survive. Before Halloween, before the Fog, before Escape from New York, before The Thing, John Carpenter made the low budget, action, thriller Assault On Precinct 13 (1976). A simple idea that was inspired by Romero's Night of the Living Dead as a faceless gang lays siege to a closing precinct. In 2005 based on a screenplay by James (The Purge) DeMonaco, Jean-Francois Richet would remake Carpenter's classic with an all-star cast including Ethan Hawke, Laurence Fishburne, Gabriel Byrne, Maria Bello, Drea de Matteo, John Leguizamo, Brian Dennehy, and rapper Ja Rule. This week Invasion of the Remake gets inside Precinct 13 to compare, contrast, and ultimately see which film will survive the Assualt on Precinct 13.
