"I Didn't See It Coming" - Interview with LBD caregiver Mary Lou Falcone

"I Didn't See It Coming" - Interview with LBD caregiver Mary Lou Falcone

Mary Lou Falcone became a caregiver when her father had a massive stroke. She was 10 years old. The experience prepared her for the day, many years later, when her husband, illustrator and 1950s rocker Nicky Zann, was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia (LBD).

In her memoir, I Didn't See It Coming: Scenes of Love, Loss, and Lewy Body Dementia, Falcone talks about what it was like to have an international career, to be thought of in their social circles as "the golden couple," and then to face the cruel reality that the love of her life had an incurable, fatal disease.

Falcone talks candidly about three of the most challenging aspects of caring for a spouse with dementia, especially LBD: incontinence, violence, and hyper-sexuality

She also shaes the challenges she faced in writing the memoir, particularly when her second editor guided her to reveal the deeply buried emotions that resulted in this personal and poignant story, a winner of the 2023 NYC Big Book Award "Distinguished Favorite" in the category of Caregiving.

Falcone also shares an overview of the differences between LBD and Alzheimer's Disease, why it can be difficult to get a diagnosis, and her ongoing work as an advocate for LBD awareness.

The interview portion of thie episode was originally recorded for a show on YouTube called "Page 1." Here's the link to see the video version of this podcast episode.

The video version on YouTube includes a PSA created to honor my husband's memory. In the PSA is a photo of me and my husband at a wedding reception in 2017. Several hours after that photo was taken, he was rushed by ambulance to the ER. He had choked on a piece of meat.

The PSA also includes a brief video I took one morning while my husband and I were hiking around a local reservoir.

Researchers project the number of people living with dementia, a neurodegenerative syndrome which currently afflicts 50 million people worldwide, will more than triple by 2050, soaring to 152 million cases globally. But experts in a recent report say two in five dementia cases could potentially be delayed or prevented by certain lifestyle choices and government policies.
The report builds on the previous nine risk factors identified by the Lancet Commission on dementia prevention, intervention and care, and adds three additional risk factors — air pollution, traumatic brain injury and excessive consumption of alcohol.

Eric Larson, an author of the study and senior investigator at Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute in Seattle, said just as people can’t control their genetics, people in their 40s can’t retroactively change their socioeconomic circumstances in early life — but people of all ages can, to varying extents, make lifestyle choices like habitual exercising to improve their health.
“In my own [clinical] practice, I’ve been telling patients it would be a good idea to exercise regularly,” Larson said. “When they found out that you could preserve your brain and red

    154 - ROBIN'S WISH director Tylor Norwood

Paco and George are pleased to have on today’s guest Tylor Norwood the director of Robin’s Wish. This documentary centers around the final years of Robin Williams and the confusion around why this comedy icon killed himself in 2014.

After his death, the media narrative skewed the facts surrounding why Williams died. It wasn’t until a coroner’s report that the complexity of his situation was better understood: he had a severe case of Lewy Body Syndrome.

Williams’ widow, Susan Schneider Williams, has become a championing voice for the little-known form of dementia with Lewy Bodies. Showing the frailty of a suffering genius in his last months, Robins Wish is the first time the public is seeing this side of Williams’ life.

This story is lovingly crafted by director Tylor Norwood, who has been a guest on Sup Doc for his previous documentary, The United States of Detroit. Tylor was approached by Susan to tell this story, and his team tracked down friends and neighbors while laying out the details of a fairly obscure disease that is very difficult to diagnose.

Robin’s Wish comes out on Video on Demand (VOD) everywhere on September 1st.

    Lewy Body Dementia

    Lewy Body Dementia
Lewy Body Dementia (LBD) bears resemblance to both Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. It is a rapidly progressive degenerative disorder whose features include cognitive/executive impairment, REM sleep disorder, and persistent or recurrent visual hallucinations. Cognitive symptoms tend to fluctuate a great deal, and features similar to those of Parkinson’s disease are also noted. LBD is thought to afflict approximately 1.3 million Americans. Dr. Caroil Lippa, a neurologist recognized internationally for her contributions to the neurobiology of aging and dementia, will discuss this disorder.
