    Ep 067 | The Gym (Do's and Don'ts)

After discussing Bryan's new snack obsession, Alex tells the story of someone flouting COVID guidelines at the gym. This leads to a hilarious discussion of gym routines and gym etiquette. Is it necessary to wipe down the equipment? Is it ever acceptable to use equipment incorrectly? Can you make love connections at the gym? Later, we discuss the reasons for our fitness goals, how we'll keep each other accountable for our fitness goals and how listeners can join in the fun. All of that plus flannel man, Markus isn't cute when he stretches, and Bryan wears superhero spandex.

HTL 066: Never Too Old To Lift; How strength training can restore your body, with Chris Tiley

#66 - We are shifting gears a bit and talking about our health and body and how strength training is actually the best thing you can do to keep your body from breaking down as you get older.

My guest today is Chris Tiley, a physiotherapist based in Birmingham, England, and he is a big proponent of helping people, particularly those over 60 years of age, regain their strength and mobility.

As the founder of Never Too Old To Lift, he is passionate about introducing strength training to those who never thought they could do it.

Don’t think this episode isn’t for you, though.

Strength training is for everyone: over 60, in your 20s, the non-athlete, the fit, the couch potato; no matter where you are physically, you can improve your strength, mobility, and health by lifting some heavy stuff - in a controlled and gradual way, of course.

Chris and I are here to encourage you and give you a little foundation and proof of why it works and why you can absolutely benefit too.

25 - 4 different ways to keep your progress DURING the festive season 2020!

I’ve said it before, food is a bonding experience for humans, it brings people together and always has since the time of mankind. We need it to survive, BUT now it’s very much a luxury we indulge in and bond over with people so we need to know how to manage ourselves at these times!

"It’s about consistency, 300 days of consistency is better than 300 days of not trying"

What did you think about these tips? Do you have any others that you would add or recommend?

Why So Difficult? | Justin Stoddart

Why So Difficult? | Justin Stoddart

Oftentimes we think that we've been cheated or we've been robbed, because it's hard, because we have to go through difficult things, and that somebody has wronged us because we don't have a totally easy paved path in front of us. And I'm here to tell you that if that's the way that you look at life, then you're going to have a lot of very disappointing days. The trick is to realize that occasionally there's going to be really easy times, but also to realize that with difficulty and adversity, there are rays of sunshine and wonderful stress free times. Then in the stressful times, we find tremendous growth. And in growth, we find happiness.

The reality is we are designed to grow. We are designed to progress we are designed to get better. And the way that we do that is through adversity and challenges and overcoming those we strengthen our physical as well as our spiritual and our mindset muscles. I want each of you just to internalize that lesson, the same lesson I taught my kids and I'm teaching myself as I share this with you is that if it if it were easy, it wouldn't actually be good for us. We have to not only recognize that there are going to be adverse experiences coming to us, but we have to learn to embrace them, to actually be excited about difficulty. I don't know if you'll ever be excited about it, but you need to at least be excited about the results.

The hope is that, this is actually good for me. I'm going to be a stronger person, I'm going to have a story to tell, I'm going to be able to lift myself beyond this and gain strength and doing so and I'm going to be able to be a strength to other people. When we come out the other side, we recognize the fact that we have overcome and are the better for it.

The reality is when we start to go through difficulties and challenges our level of gratitude for even the simple good things in our life goes way up, we become less entitled, we become less angry at the success of other people, we become more grateful for the successes that we've had. We become happier, more productive people who are better able to serve those around them.

Health & Fitness Friday - Do Strong People Live Longer?

Health & Fitness Friday - Do Strong People Live Longer?

    Happy Friday Everyone!

David here to announce that we are launching a new component of The Essential Strength Podcast today called Fit & Healthy Friday!!

Every Friday you will get a bite sized podcast covering a health and fitness topic that you can apply to your own life. Think of it as a little gift at the end of a long week, and something to take with you into the weekend as motivation to keep moving in the right direction - THE HEALTHY DIRECTION!

Today, we're reviewing an article that was originally published in Outdoor Magazine's online platform titled - To Delay Death, Lift Weights (click the title to read the full article)

This article was also shared on the Reading List at https://www.strongerinmotion.com
which is the home of my personal training and nutrition business, Stronger In Motion.

In this mini-pod you'll learn about how two different research studies looking at large groups of adults found indicators that would suggest strength training and developing muscle strength may reduce your chance of death when compared to similar but untrained individuals. It definitely motivated me to get in the gym today, and I hope it motivates you to either keep hitting the weights, or to start training for strength as it appears to have some solid anti-aging benefits!

Hope ya'll have a GREAT weekend, and until next time - We wish you STRENGTH and GOOD HEALTH!

Meredith Paterson: Lost and Not Quite Found

Meredith Paterson: Lost and Not Quite Found

“What it’s like right now… and right now it kinda sucks.”
    ~Meredith Blanks Paterson

Join The OHMazing® Way podcast host, Beth Reese, PhD, E-RYT, RCYT, and Meredith Blanks Paterson, MA, RYT, RCYT, in a conversation about experiencing and working with deep and often difficult emotions with herself while also supporting those of her 4 year old daughter, Ruby. In the first half of the podcast, Meredith shares how years of profound changes, like the birth of her daughter, and huge losses—her mom passing away and two miscarriages—have her connecting with and moving her body in a variety of ways to manage her changing nervous system.

“Because my daughter doesn’t sit still and meditate. Just like me her life just isn’t this blissful state of meditative calm… She has really, really big emotions.”
    ~Meredith Blanks Paterson

In the second half of the conversation, Meredith describes how she supports her daughter’s big emotions and shares a 4-step process she uses to create space for Ruby to be fully self-expressed in a compassionate, emotionally safe space. Learn how Meredith supports and coaches others through investigating and identifying the foods and movements that are most nourishing for each person.

Meredith Paterson is a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) and Registered Children’s Yoga Teacher (RCYT) through Yoga Alliance. She has an MA in English and is a writer, editor, and educator with a passion for exploring the interconnectedness of language, yoga, movement, and art.

After several years of working in educational publishing, she realized that effective learning should not be bound by classrooms, chairs, worksheets, and tests-- learners need to move and experience and feel. She began seeking ways to bring movement and mindfulness to children. She met Elizabeth Reese of Yogiños: Yoga for Youth® in 2009 and began studying and teaching children’s yoga and later, training classroom teachers to bring yoga and mindfulness into schools.

"The practice of yoga has given me the confidence and strength to seek myself under all the layers of doubt and fear. My wish as an instructor is to help others seek themselves and to awaken to their own power and light. The birth of my daughter, Ruby, and the experience of parenting a young child have reignited my desire to provide children with tools to build their own confidence, trust themselves, and feel empowered to express their needs and know their worth. I am forever curious about how our bodies integrate experiences and emotions and how we can support children in feeling safe and telling their own stories through their thoughts, words, and movements.”
