On today’s episode we are joined by two very special guests, Ashley Closson, who was one of our very first guests on the podcast (Addicts and Assholes with Ashley: listen here). Ashley gives us a life update and shares how one small step forward led her to where she is today. Joining Ashley is Madelyn Klein, a new guest who will be sharing her personal story and how her and Ashley’s paths crossed with their involvement in the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). Together, Ashley and Madelyn will give us insight into their journeys, LLS, and the VOY campaign. More about Ashley:
Ashley Closson, one of the first guests on the BBB podcast, is back to give us an update on life two years later and dive deeper into her cancer and philanthropic journey. Born and raised in upstate New York, Ashley Closson has a unique story, to say the least. She is happy to share her wins and failures on divorce, being a two-time cancer survivor, navigating changing your career when it isn’t bringing you joy, and lastly, taking control of finding your happy ending no matter the cost. She is a graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology for Interior Design and Fashion Merchandising. Her passion for helping others after her health battles has guided her to an account executive position for a local not-for-profit health insurance company. She uses her passion for helping others to motivate her to succeed in her career. She also spends her time giving back to the community by serving on the vestry (board) for her church, on an Emerging Leaders committee with a local chamber of commerce, as a member of the leadership team for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Visionary of the Year campaign, and as a LLS first connection volunteer. When she isn't working or serving her community, you can find Ashley spending time with her close-knit family and her son, Bennett.

    More about Madelyn:
Madelyn Klein was born and raised in Upstate New York and oversees the Visionaries of the Year campaign for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in Albany, NY. Madelyn's professional background is deeply rooted in sales, marketing, social media, and fundraising. Madelyn has a passion for giving back to her community by volunteering and hosting fundraising events for local organizations such as animal shelters and other non-profit organizations. She got involved with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society as a volunteer back in 2018 when her father was diagnosed with an incurable form of cancer. She then left the sales world to work full time at the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society last year to spearhead the highest impact fundraising campaign in the Capital Region to help further raise awareness and funds for the organization that helped save her father's life. When Madelyn isn't working, she enjoys Pilates, going on walks with her dogs, and spending time with her loved ones.

Hosted by cancer survivor and philanthropist Vince Todd, Jr., Chairman and Co-Founder of the Heroes Foundation, and Heroes Foundation Board Member Daniel Abdallah, the Summits Podcast is a place for people to share their stories. Everyone has a cancer story. From battling a deadly disease to caring for a loved one, when we rise up and face life’s greatest challenges, we see with a new vision, feel with a greater passion, and think with a deeper perspective. Along the way, paths cross, journeys intersect, and missions converge. For Vince Todd, it was his own cancer diagnosis that led him and his wife, Cindy, to launch the Heroes Foundation to provide meaningful support to cancer patients, education to promote cancer prevention, and resources to advance research for a cure. What started with friends and family grew into a community. The Summits Podcast is an extension of that community. Our stories are what bring us together. Artists, athletes, doctors, business people - we’re all family members, community leaders, and activists. Everyone has a story. Anyone can inspire. No one battles alone. Join the conversation. Let’s climb the summit together.

S4E13 Alopecia, Leukemia & Lymphoma, and Team Another Chance with Summer Yang

S4E13 Alopecia, Leukemia & Lymphoma, and Team Another Chance with Summer Yang

Welcome to this episode of Alopecia Life. Today's guest is Summer Yang. When Summer developed alopecia in kindergarten, she also met one of her best friends. Years later, when they were both experiencing hair loss - one from alopecia, and the other from leukemia - their friendship became even stronger from their shared experiences. Summer is here today to share about her alopecia, along with the Student Visionaries of the Year Campaign to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Her campaign ends on Friday, March 10th.

Summer is a sophomore in high school who finds a passion in learning multiple languages. She enjoys reading, traveling, listening to music and shopping for the perfect jacket. After school, she volunteers with the Asian Hall of Fame, the Chinese Chamber of Commerce and AAPA (Asian American Professional Association), while preparing for her fundraising campaign for Student Visionaries of the Year with LLS (Leukemia and Lymphoma Society). In her free time, she creates YouTube videos on her Channel, Worship Asian Drama, focused on various Chinese and Korean drama suggestion lists and Chinese phrase tutorials.

She hopes to share her story to inspire other girls to love themselves for who they are. She wishes to spread confidence and support within the community and create a safe environment to talk about alopecia.

Thank you for sharing your time with Summer and me today. For those who would like to support the campaign or reach out to Summer with questions, those links can be found here in the show notes. It's awesome to see how much time, energy, and passion she has put into this, and I know she will appreciate hearing from you.

Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Anne Bradley on Light The Night

Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Anne Bradley on Light The Night

The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Light The Night is back in person this year!  Anne Bradley of LLS joins us today to talk about the many ways to get involved.  The event will be September 30th in Hart Plaza (with a virtual component for those who are more comfortable).  Anne walks us through the return of this amazing event.

All of us know someone touched by cancer.  Thanks to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's work, blood cancer survival rates have gone from 3% in the 1960's to between 80 and 90 percent today. Also, LLS has been involved in funding 40% of drugs in these areas.  Obviously, to continue this work, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society needs to raise money.

Anne tells us about all the different ways to raise money for Light The Night, including challenges for executives and young professionals.  She also mentions some great perks for the winners of these competitions - you'll want to hear this.

We also spend some time discussing resources provided by LLS - Andrea has participated in webinars for patients and supporters.  We preview more to come.

Finally, we get to know Anne, a true Renaissance woman.  In addition to her fundraising work, she's a vocalist for a punk rock band, a gardener, and a fitness instructor.
