    Deb Essen, Weaving Omnivore

    Deb Essen, Weaving Omnivore
Many weavers find their inspiration by asking, “What if...” Since she first sat down at a loom, Deb Essen has pushed the limits of her weaving by asking, “Why can’t I?” Deb has followed that question since childhood, right through her career as a weaving teacher and author. Since she first neglected her table-clearing duties to watch a weaving demonstration at the age of 9, the craft of weaving has held her fascinated. And despite the disciplines of teaching, designing, and writing, that childlike spirit of exploration still gets free rein in her weaving studio. “I play with everything. I mean, that’s the beauty of weaving,” she says. “There’s something to play with all the time.” When Deb talks about her favorite classes, the word “play” comes up often, and her approach is as lighthearted as it is methodical. “There’s always an amazing surprise for everybody in the class,” she says of her class on color in weaving. “You kind of have to throw color theory for artists out the window” and sample different color combinations. (Deb will be teaching color in weaving at the first Weave Together with Handwoven (https://weavetogether.handwovenmagazine.com/) event February 25–29, 2024.) Deb’s love of structure isn’t limited to complex multishaft looms, or even to pick-up patterns on rigid-heddle looms. When the new Zoom Loom debuted, Deb accepted the challenge to play with the small loom and see what she could create. “You know, never say no,” she says, and developed a line of toys and figures made solely of 4" woven squares. She explores the possibilities of texture, color, and pick-up on the little squares, too. We’re looking forward to Deb joining us in Loveland, Colorado, February 25–29, 2024, for Weave Together with Handwoven. (https://weavetogether.handwovenmagazine.com/) Her classes include Color in Weaving and two classes on weaving with pin looms. 1. Audio feeds enhance the client experience.

    • You can use private audio feeds as an innovative way to engage with clients who desire high level, high touch interaction.
    •  B uses Loom and Voxer for onboarding and client communication
    • Use audio in proposals, off-boarding, and course delivery.

    2. Audio feeds can potentially replace a traditional funnel.

    • It involves sending an RSS link to a private audio feed.
    • Use a hosting platform that allows for a private feed.
    • Kim's favorite is Hello Audio.

    3. Audio feeds can create connections with audiences.

    • Use audio not specific to your business. Incorporate CTAs for YOUR business.
    • Consider creating a private feed for paying members to share real-life experiences and behind-the-scenes.
    • Use audio in email lists and blogging to entertain.

    4. Audio helps you keep up with rapidly changing platforms.

    • Business owners must adapt to a multitasking environment.
    • Using audio interfaces helps cater to needs of busy people.
    • Marketing through audio is another organic way to reach clients.
    • Record all episodes with video as part of a repurposing strategy.

#49, Joe Thomas, Co-Founder and CEO of Loom — Why it’s essential to track your time; how to get better at fundraising; getting your head right to make good decisions; and how to decide to keep building your company, even if it means sleeping on a mattress

Joe Thomas is the CEO and co-founder of Loom, the video communication platform for async work. Joe leads Loom in its mission to empower effective communication, wherever work happens. Prior to Loom, Joe served as Director of Product at MyLife.com and Director of Operations at MediaPass. He also co-founded Redesign Agency while in college at Indiana University.

While leading Loom, Thomas has been recognized by Forbes 30 Under 30, Forbes Cloud 100, and America's Best Startup Employers.

When Joe Thomas started working on Loom, he and the team pivoted 3 times in 9 months. But they finally got the idea right, and now “Loom” is a noun, meaning “send me a video.”

In this great discussion, Joe and I go deep in what it’s like to tinker with a concept over and over until you finally get it right. We discuss what he learned in his many “at bats” at fundraising, how and why he tracks his time, and the value that his meditation practice has brought to him as a CEO and as a human.

This new episode of From Start-Up to Grown-Up has so many pearls of wisdom from Joe - I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Simplifying Marketing: From Touchpoints to Sales Journey

Simplifying Marketing: From Touchpoints to Sales Journey

In this episode of the Elevate Media podcast, host Chris Anderson engages in a conversation with marketing expert Nathan Yeung about the importance of effective marketing and simplifying the sales process. Nathan emphasizes the significance of providing enough content to potential customers to facilitate their decision-making process. He argues that people are inherently lazy and prefer having sufficient information to make a decision rather than extensively researching multiple options. Nathan suggests that businesses should focus on creating quality content that educates and guides customers along their journey.

The discussion delves into the power of video content and how it can shorten the sales cycle by warming up potential customers. Nathan highlights the effectiveness of tools like Loom videos, which allow businesses to provide detailed information at the customer's convenience. He emphasizes the need for active customer feedback loops to constantly improve messaging and align it with the audience's needs.

Nathan also advises entrepreneurs to focus on a few select touchpoints in their marketing strategy rather than spreading themselves thin across various channels. By executing well on specific touchpoints and continuously seeking feedback, businesses can refine their messaging and drive positive growth.

Lynda Grace Black - Philly Fiber/Weaving & Knitting the Souls of the City - 007

Lynda Grace Black - Philly Fiber/Weaving & Knitting the Souls of the City - 007

Lynda and I are both Quakers and happen to be members of the same Quaker Meeting in Philadelphia. She was one of the first people I met after I joined the Quaker community and I’ve always known her as an artist and urban gardener. Unpretentious and one of the most authentic people you will ever meet, Lynda is a visual artist whose aesthetic is informed in part by her dad’s activism and her grandmother’s crochet lessons. Her crocheted vessels, paper collages and knitted assemblages are an expression of some of the stories we have yet to know and some of the ones we need to unlearn.

What I like about Lynda’s work is that she operates in a 3 dimensional way with materials that have their own unique textures and hues and when you really get into the meaning behind her art you realize that she makes her pieces come alive in more ways than one.

Lynda’s work has shown in numerous Philadelphia area venues, including The Colored Girls Museum, Seed on Diamond Gallery, The Barnes Foundation, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. An occasional DIY public space artist, she placed her crocheted vessels in trees in Philadelphia, St. Helena, Savannah, Berlin and London to represent lynchings and other government sanctioned brutality.

Lynda’s work is featured in the book Making Good: An Inspirational Guide to Being an Artist Craftsman. Lynda holds a BA in Journalism and MA in Education. Her self-guided study includes programs at Fleisher Art Memorial, Asian Arts Initiative and private training.

The dream of Loom-Land - With Daniel Harris of London Cloth Co

The dream of Loom-Land - With Daniel Harris of London Cloth Co

This week sees a return visit from Daniel Harris of the London Cloth co. Daniel is renowned throughout the world of weaving as a keen collector and restorer of old looms. In addition to being a staunch supporter of keeping the old ways alive, he also trains new weavers and travels far and wide helping to get old looms to run right. The reason for the return, other than to have a good natter about life as a loomsman (I totally made up this word), is that Daniels's dream of creating "Loom-Land" is finally coming to fruition, having bought an old mill in Wales. This mill requires substantial work, which Daniel hopes to achieve through crowdfunding. See the link below.

Ep. 65 - How to Build a Successful Remote Team Culture

Ep. 65 - How to Build a Successful Remote Team Culture

Listen as Brooke shares her experience at creating a remote-first company during a pandemic as well as easy tips at creating a successful team culture overall.

The Allobee leadership team is all on the east coast but experts are all over the United States. We do an All Hive meeting at the beginning of the month and I asked our workforce plus our internal team, if they could use one word, how would they describe our work culture here at Allobee. In this remote time, do people feel supported, inspired, welcoming, flexible, safe? I love that supportive was the #1 culture for Allobee. If you don’t feel support, a lot will fall by the wayside. I encourage you to do a word map or something similar to find out how they define the culture.

We make sure that our missions and values are extremely defined and that everyone knows about them. At Allobee our mission is to get women and caregivers paid that have left the workforce. It is also a mission to help our business owners scale simply. We talk about this a lot in all that we do. Are you talking about your values on a regular basis? Does your team know what your values and missions are? Talk about them often.

Recently while on vacation, I was reading a book about the 3 things a CEO should do. One of those was culture. The author said he set up a Be Attitudes, which was a great play on words for Allobee, so I created 12 Bee Attitudes. Bee happy, kind, bold, proactive, etc. We implement these on a rotating basis. We make sure these are intertwined in our communication, through events and everything we do.

How do we bring people together? Virtual world can be complicated especially during the pandemic. The majority of our force are caregivers. Adding anything extra was too much so we didn’t do too much for the first few months. We were constantly asking how people felt and started doing more recently with virtual co-working where you can work and chat with the internal team. We also have our virtual meet and greet and use the Gather Round platform. It’s fun, laid back and easy and it helps team members who haven’t interacted much. One of my favorite things with our internal team is called Breakout Boxes. I encourage you to look into them.

The tools we use for collaboration and communication are  Asana, Slack, Zoom, Loom and Circle for our membership platform. If you have any sort of membership or want more of a community feel, Circle is a great way to communicate with one another.

In a world that’s constantly changing, it’s important to adapt and enjoy something better. What’s working for us today, might not work for us tomorrow. We need to have a pulse on our team and know what’s going on and how people are feeling.

Amy D. McKnight, Creative Weaver, Simple Looms

Amy D. McKnight, Creative Weaver, Simple Looms
Amy D. McKnight weaves not only doubleweave but point twill on a rigid-heddle loom, prefers a hybrid method of direct and indirect warping for long but efficient warps, and uses weaving software (usually a tool for 4+ shaft weaving) to plan her projects. It's not just pushing a simple loom to do more complex weaving, it's also bringing a love of weaving to completely new audiences. She created a plan for the Common Threads Loom, a versatile pin loom/potholder loom/diagonal-weaving loom that anyone can make with simple office supplies, and she offers it as a free download on her site. Having created a rich weaving course that she offered for subscribers, she decided that keeping the information behind a paywall wasn't for her—and recently posted it to watch freely at YouTube. Amy D. McKnight calls herself a motivational, inspirational weaver, and you will, too.
