1992: A League of Their Own / Top Female-Dominated Casts

There's no crying in baseball! There's no crying at PCY either. Just a good time whenever you listen. This time it's the 1992 Penny Marshall film A League of their Own, starring Geena Davis, Lori Petty, Madonna, Rosie O'Donnell, and Tom Hanks. Telling the important story of the Professional Women's Baseball League started during WWII, it's considered one of the best sports movies out there.

After breaking it down, we continue the sports theme with another draft. This time we're picking our favorite movies (or shows) starring a female-dominated cast. Check it out now to hear what made our lists!

Catherine Hardwicke on 'Tank Girl,' Self-Expression, and Friendship

Catherine Hardwicke on 'Tank Girl,' Self-Expression, and Friendship

Director Catherine Hardwicke's latest film is MAFIA MAMMA, and you probably know her as the director of TWILIGHT, LORDS OF DOGTOWN, or THIRTEEN. But did you know that she got her start as a production designer, and that she production designed TANK GIRL? Well, this was after she got her degree in architecture. All this, plus dressing like a building, dealing with on-set toxic events, directing Monica Bellucci, and the kinds of characters she'd like to see on screen, come up in this sprawling conversation that reveals an artist as fun, badass, and idiosyncratic as the titular TANK GIRL.

    Francesca Maldonado on 'Tank Girl'

    Francesca Maldonado on 'Tank Girl'

Director and  production designer (and former child actor) Francesca Maldonado shares how Rebecca (aka Tank Girl) from 1995's TANK GIRL was formative in her life, and offers perspectives on Hot Girl Representation, Valley Girl pride, and what's missing from movies now and in the past.

Then, Jordan has one quick thing about an upcoming Amazon series called Class of '07.

    The Poop Sombrero (VOY S5E13)

When an away team gets sucked into a space sinkhole, they crash another shuttle on a dangerous desert planet. But when they meet Tank Girl and she makes Tuvok the object of her affection, lessons from his youth keep him from falling off the logic wagon again. What do giant spiders taste like? Do all young Vulcans go through logic puberty? Is the neck-pinching nerve always in the same place? It’s the episode with all the gongs and bells!

    Point Break (1991)

    Point Break (1991)

Happy 30th Anniversary to this tale of an undercover FBI agent and a surfing bank robber thrust together through fate – Keanu Reeves plays the FBI agent and the late great Patrick Swayze plays the bank robber.  Oscar-winner Kathryn Bigelow directs them alongside Gary Busey, John C. McGinley, and Lori Petty in one of the more quotable action films in cinema history.

We were in a bit of a  Keanu mood (when are we not though) so we decided to finally talk Point Break. Some of our talking points include why Kathryn Bigelow was the best choice as director, the mysterious world of surfing, and why this film never ages.

    Episode 5: Point Break

    Episode 5: Point Break

“There should be more women directing. I think there's just not the awareness that it's really possible. It is.”-Kathryn Bigelow.

Point Break remains a pivotal piece in our hosts’ film education largely because it asks the essential question: what more do you need than Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze surfing, skydiving, and robbing banks? The 1991 film may not have redefined movies upon its release, but since then it’s gained appreciation largely because of director Kathryn Bigelow’s giant mark on Hollywood. Bigelow remains to be the only woman in history to win an Oscar for Best Director, and in this episode of Remainders, Darren and Patrick try to give credit where credit’s due.

    After you Alphonse, I insist.

    A League of Their Own (1992) (Re-Release)

    A League of Their Own (1992) (Re-Release)
We had the week off this week, BUT in honour of International Women's Day, we thought we'd repost the first, and possibly only movie we have covered that passes the bechdel test - A League of Their Own. This was originally published all the way back at episode 12 (which is why we sound... a little fresh), so most of you probably haven't heard it - but it's a great movie and deserves a re-visit, so get around it this International Women's Day!

    --------

How many female legends can you fit into one motion picture? This is the question 'A League of Their Own' attempts to answer. This was a family favourite in both of our households growing up, and is a fascinating watch in 2020 for all the reasons you might expect. We go deep on its origins and its maestro, Penny Marshall, and uncover that the story of this film getting made ain't all that different than the story it's trying to tell. All this plus bad John Lovitz impressions!

    Ep.04 Point Break

Watch out for crabs, cause Kyle and Kaileigh are taking you to the beach! In 1991's Point Break, you'll be robbing banks and jumping out of planes in a thrill seeker's delight! Just don't get too wrapped up in all the fun you're having, or you might not be the same when it's over...

A League of Their Own — Jessica Mendoza

A League of Their Own — Jessica Mendoza

“A League of Their Own” is a fictionalized account of the real-life All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, formed during World War II. Geena Davis and Lori Petty play the competitive Hinson sisters, who are recruited to join the Rockford Peaches and play in the league. Since its release in 1992, the movie has inspired many young female athletes, including baseball commentator Jessica Mendoza. She grew up playing softball with her sister and went on to compete at the Olympics — including winning gold and silver. Jessica says one of the movie’s famous lines — “It’s the hard that makes it great” — offered her inspiration to break records on the field and off.

Jessica Mendoza is a baseball analyst for ESPN and an Olympic softball gold and silver medalist. She also works for the Mets as a baseball operations advisor and is a full-time member of ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball booth.

    Jonah Hex

    Jonah Hex
When a terrorist plans to destroy Washington D.C. the only hope for the United States is a confederate soldier with a scar on his face and a chip on his shoulder--Jonah Hex. A strange steampunk western based on the DC Comics character, Jonah Hex failed to find an audience despite A-list stars Josh Brolin and John Malkovich. Is this possibly an overlooked gem, or could it really be as bad as world-of-mouth indicates? Listen to Now Playing and find out!

    Constantine

    Constantine
From the pages of DC’s Hellblazer comics, John Constantine was a blonde, British occult detective with a smoking habit and a bad attitude. The comics had a cult following and in 2005 Warner Bros gave the anti-hero the big screen treatment. Moving the action from Liverpool to Los Angeles, the film starred Keanu Reeves as the Americanized occultist. Now, continuing their look at DC comics one-off films, Stuart, Arnie, and Jakob see if Constantine’s theatrical adaptation had spirit, or was dead on arrival.
