Climate News Weekly: Apple's Green Ad, Peak Fossil Fuels, G20, and more

This has been a big week for nations and companies ‘talking the talk’ about reducing their emissions footprints, from updated commitments at the G20 summit, to a carbon-neutral product launch by Apple, and the family that owns the Mærsk shipping company creating its own clean shipping fuel supply chain with a green methanol subsidiary company.

But which of these groups are also ‘walking the walk’ and making real strides in accelerating the transition away from fossil fuels? Climate News Weekly co-hosts James, Dina, and Julio break it down.

How to Approach 3PL-Brand Partnerships with Scott Weiss

For this episode of the eCom Logistics Podcast, we welcome Scott Weiss, Vice President Technical Sales-Warehousing and Distribution Services at Maersk North America. Today, he shares his thoughts on why many brands and 3PL relationships end up falling apart and how to approach issues that arise within the partnership.

    ABOUT SCOTT

Scott Weiss has over 25 years of 3PL warehouse and distribution leadership experience.  As Vice President of Technical Sales, Scott oversees the Warehouse and Distribution sales for Maersk North America.  Founded in 1904, A.P. Moller - Maersk is an integrated, asset-based logistics company working to connect and simplify its customers’ supply chains from factory to door.

As the global leader in logistics services, the company operates in 130 countries and employs more than 100,000 people worldwide with 550 global warehouses.  Maersk is one of the leading omni-channel logistics providers in North America that operates over 7,000 trucks, 158 warehouses, and 26 million square feet of warehouse space with an extensive list of e-commerce, wholesale, and retail companies ranging from start-up to CPG Fortune 500 companies.

Scott holds an M.B.A. degree in Management from California State University, Fullerton; a B.S. HIGHLIGHTS

    • 07:00 3PLs are at a good position to be supply chain advisors for midmarket brands
    • 09:49 What clients ask for when it comes to helping with sourcing a product
    • 13:01 Pros and cons of a single node network
    • 15:42 Are customers asking for automation and robotics?

    QUOTES

10:35 What to consider from sourcing the product to delivery - Scott: "You need to look at the whole picture. Inbound, real estate,  labor, and outbound, before you can give them the answer. So with global supply chain, looking at that whole piece of a puzzle is the only way you're going to give the best possible answer and recommendations."

16:37 Protect your workforce - Scott: "Employee retention, I've seen a big increase for companies that have their own warehousing 3PLs. The value of treating an employee and taking care of them has never been higher. That's one thing that came out of COVID that companies frankly did not pay as much attention to before."

Guest: Gregg Healy from Savills discusses the holiday peak season; Greater focus on last mile logistics; More commitments to transition to zero-emission vehicles

Our guest on this week's episode is Gregg Healy, the head of Industrial Service for North America with the commercial real estate firm Savills. Most retailers admit that this will not be the typical holiday peak season. They have lots of inventory and we are now seeing peak season stretching out well ahead of the traditional Black Friday start. What has changed this year and why?

More companies are focusing on the importance of last-mile delivery to their overall business– a factor that is giving logistics a seat at the table in the C-suite and the boardroom. We look at current trends that will define last-mile delivery in 2023 and beyond.

Yesterday, we saw a big step toward a greener future when the Biden Administration joined other nations in endorsing a global plan to move toward zero-emissions trucks and buses for all new vehicles sold starting in 2040. This international group agreement was signed at the COP27 diplomatic meeting in Egypt. What is the reaction from the logistics industry towards this new national goal?

Guest: Dr. Emily Tucker on our vulnerable pharmaceutical supply chains; A new carbon-neutral cargo ship is unveiled; We discuss the current state of logistics.

In this episode, our guest is Dr. Emily Tucker, assistant professor at Clemson University's Department of Industrial Engineering. Most of the medicines we rely on every day come from just two key trading partners overseas. That has created shortages and vulnerabilities in our medical supply chains and has limited our abilities to assure that we have medicines when we need them. Dr. Tucker explains why we have this problem and what can be done to solve it.

Ocean going vessels make up a significant portion of the carbon released into the atmosphere. This week we learned that Maersk, the huge container shipping company, is taking steps to decarbonize its operations. In an announcement Maersk says it has ordered a large16,000 TEU cargo vessel that will be carbon neutral. This new vessel will be powered by methanol. Is this a step in helping to alleviate climate change?

This issue of the Quarterly takes a deep dive into major aspects of logistics with specific articles on the status of freight, parcel, rail, air, ocean, inventory, and other market segments. How does the industry look now and how might that change in the near term?

Today's guest has an extensive background in Health and Safety and is now partway through the journey with Maersk implementing the Safety 2 mindset in their operations. But the content and message itself, about their journey, the honesty of the challenges. All of the above made me leave the keynote thinking I need to get this guy on the pod!
