Women in Manufacturing Engineering the Future | Real Talk With Rob Tavi ft. Angela Thurman | Episode 47
Episode 5: Supply Chain Disruption – Everyone Is Adding Their 2 cents…to the Perfect Storm
In this fifth episode, Howard Coleman, Principal of MCA Associates, offers his perspective on the “supply chain disruption” that is being experienced by wholesale distributors and manufacturing companies (who just may be your suppliers)! There appear to be plenty of reasons to raise questions about the merits and drawbacks of global supply chains.
Surely, there has been a lot of question-raising news coverage from the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Forbes, Bloomberg News, Atlantic Monthly and many others; Questions raised about “Just-in-Time” and the overall “Lean Thinking” inventory philosophy. Even the general public is now paying close attention.
Why? Because it seems that almost every stage of the international and domestic ‘assembly line’ has broken down in its own unique way.
Definition of “Perfect Storm”: a critical or disastrous situation created by a powerful concurrence of factors.
Is it a “perfect storm”? Is this really becoming the “everything shortage” as some have called it; causing disruptions of a diverse assortment of products and materials?
Well, here I am - adding my own 2 cents. There is something in this podcast for everyone to consider, whether you be a manufacturer/supplier, wholesale distributor - or a parent who will need to explain this to your kids come the holiday season!
As usual, there are also some additional free resources available that you can obtain to optimize this podcast’s take-away. So, listen on and we’ll tell you how to get it.

Episode 17: Technology and People: What's the Right Combo? (Guest Kirsten Austin)
Today’s topic is definitely important in the business world and especially in the manufacturing world. We all use technology so frequently that it is now embedded in our work and home lives. But is it all too much sometimes? What’s the right balance between utilizing technology and actual human interaction? And how much technology is too much technology?
Joining us in this episode is Kirsten Austin. For over twenty-five years she has been involved in the software business with a focus on manufacturing, distribution and fulfillment. Currently she is the Business Relations Manager for DCSC Inc.
DCSC started as a VAR for an accounting and manufacturing solution. Later they decided to sell and implement another ERP solution. They have earned two major ERP awards in 2002 and 2003. Subsequently focus was shifted to solely support, develop and implement their published software suite DC Warehouse Automation and their Multi-Carrier Shipping Solution DCMobile. These solutions are implemented across the nation and beyond. They have direct shipping carrier integrations with FedEx®, UPS®, DHL®, Endicia®, Purolator® and other carriers. DCSC software is constantly evolving to meet the needs of our distribution, manufacturing and fulfillment clients. We help take the "Bull" (manual and redundant processes) out of the warehouse.
Kirsten also is a leader for USA Manufacturing Hour Chat on Twitter. Anyone who champions U.S. manufacturing can join in on a new conversation each week on Twitter using the hashtag #USAMfgHour. The chat starts at 11 a.m. Pacific Standard Time/2 p.m. Eastern. People share positive blog posts, helpful articles, news, important information, accomplishments, events, and more with other manufacturers and supporters from throughout the country.

GM’s $9K Pickup, Another SpaceX Failure & Americans Won't Buy American | Today in Manufacturing Ep. 9
Welcome to the Today in Manufacturing Podcast, a new podcast brought to you by the editors from Manufacturing.net and Industrial Equipment News (IEN).
In each episode, we discuss the five biggest stories in manufacturing, and the implications they have on the industry moving forward. This week, we discuss:
Americans Still Won't Pay More for USA-Made Goods
In 2017, a Reuters/Ipsos poll revealed that 70 percent of Americans believe it is “very important” or “somewhat important” to buy U.S. goods, but 37 percent said they wouldn’t pay more for those goods. The poll was recently re-issued and despite supply chain challenges and fears over many critical goods being sub-par or unavailable, the results are virtually unchanged.
New Boston Dynamics Robot Moves 800 Cases Per Hour
Boston Dynamics has a new robot: Stretch. The new robot is designed to move boxes around warehouses and distribution centers. It can move up to 800 cases per hour, picking up boxes around 50 pounds. The timing couldn't be more perfect as demand in e-commerce continues to surge.
Nearly a Week Later, Massive Ship Freed in Suez Canal
On Monday, tugboats, helped by the tides, were able to free the massive Ever Given ship from the Suez Canal. It was stuck for the better part of a week and the traffic jam held up $9 billion a day in global trade and further strained supply chains.
SpaceX Launches Test Rocket, Breaks Apart Before Landing
Another week, another SpaceX failure. This time, it was a failed landing that caused the futuristic, bullet-shaped Starship to break apart right before touchdown.
GM’s $9,000 Pickup
Motor1 reports that Wuling, a joint venture between GM and China’s SAIC Motor, has unveiled its debut pickup. The Zhengtu will cost 58,800 Chinese Yuan — or just north of $9,000 American.

Volkswagen's Planned 'Name Change' an Apparent Hoax

The 5 Most Dangerous States for Drivers
According to the National Safety Council, pandemic-related factors led Americans to driving 13 percent fewer miles in 2020. Still, the country experienced a 24 percent increase in the rate of road-related deaths – the largest year-over-year increase in 96 years.

Worker Paid in Pennies, Flying Car Prototype Tested & Skyscraper-Sized Cargo Ship Blocks Canal | Today in Manufacturing Ep. 8
The Today in Manufacturing Podcast is brought to you by the editors from Manufacturing.net and Industrial Equipment News (IEN). In each episode, we discuss the five biggest stories in manufacturing, and the implications they have on the industry moving forward. This week, we discuss:
Worker Receives Final Paycheck in Pennies
A Georgia man says his former employer owed him $915 in back pay after he left his job in November. After he left A OK Walker Autoworks, his final check never came and he had to bring it to the Georgia Department of Labor. Well, he finally got paid, and he woke up to find 90,000 oil-covered pennies at the end of his driveway.
China Fears Eavesdropping Teslas
The Chinese government has concerns over Teslas and state security. According to Bloomberg, the vehicles have been banned from military bases. The Chinese military thinks Tesla’s cameras could transmit classified information, so owners are being asked to park off site or stop driving them altogether.
Fire at Chip Plant Adds to Shortage
Last week, an electrical fault at a Renesas chip plant in northern Japan caused a fire to pour smoke into a cleanroom. The company says it will take at least a month to resume production on its 300mm wafer line. Auto parts suppliers will begin to see chip shipments fall in about a month and automakers like Honda, Toyota and Nissan are “facing a difficult situation.”
AeroMobil Tests Flying Car Prototype’s Airworthiness
Flying car startup AeroMobil recently released footage from test flights of the company’s experimental prototype conducted late last year. The company is developing a vehicle that rides and flies with the comfort of a luxury automobile rather than the bare-bones experience of most single-engine aircraft.
Massive Cargo Ship Blocking Suez Canal
A container ship the size of a floating skyscraper has become wedged across the Suez Canal in Egypt and it's threatening to disrupt a global shipping system already strained by the coronavirus pandemic. It's an extraordinary event that hasn't happened in the canal's 150-year history.
In Case You Missed It
Stellantis Cost-Cutting Includes Toilets
Production costs at Italian Stellantis factories are higher than any other manufacturing facility so the company is cutting cleaning services, reducing the temperature and limiting the number of toilets available to staff.
Grape Nuts Returns to Stores After Months-Long Shortage
