    I don't speak french.
    Me too.
Solution ? Marti ! Marti ?

The Stooges - Aerosmith - Marti, Gérard Pansanel & Pierre Peyras - Duke Ellington

    The Culinary Curator

    The Culinary Curator

On this episode of the Life in the Carolinas podcast, Carl sits down with the always-entertaining Marti Mongiello, along with previous guest Orlando Herrera.

Marti grew up with who he calls the equivalent of the von Trapp family. His parents were stage actors in the Marian Theater Guild, as well as directors and producers. He was brought up in a thespian world, which meant he performed regularly, from school plays to professional productions. Living in an Italian household also meant that Marti was expected to earn his dues, which included having to pay for his own high school tuition. This instilled both a sense of discipline and the value of the dollar, which influences his decisions even today.

Nearing adulthood, Marti decided to go into the military, mainly due to the fact that he had two marks against him on his federal record for drug use. He was also, at that time, part of a gang and even ended up in jail (from which his mother had to bail him out of). He was rejected by the Air Force precisely for his drug use but was just able to enter the Navy and spent many days in a nuclear submarine.

Marti shares a plethora of incredible experiences in the Navy with Carl and Orlando, including his personal interactions with President Bill Clinton. Marti turned his love for the culinary arts into a profession, becoming a Navy cook. In nine years’, time, he received an opportunity to serve as a chef in the White House.

Referring to the White House as “the diaspora of the world”, Marti recalls the many diverse guests of the presidents from Bill Clinton onwards. Drawing from his own personal experiences sharing meals with different peoples all over the world, Marti says that, “People are just people, and the great confluence on Earth is eating and dining together with each other. Indeed, during the many years Marti spent living in Asia and Europe—being able to experience intimately the plights of a variety of cultures—he learned to appreciate the conveniences he grew up with as a Westerner.

Marti ends by saying, “I just encourage people to think about what you do have during the amount of time you have left here; and stop comparing yourself to what everyone else has.”

078: Paul Adelstein — Bloom Where You're Planted, Keep Moving Forward

078: Paul Adelstein — Bloom Where You're Planted, Keep Moving Forward

Today we chat with Paul Adelstein, from Private Practice, Prison Break, Scandal, and Girlfriend’s Guide to Divorce, as he lays out his 30 year career for us, sharing some of the most inspirational, motivational, and insightful stories, and how he’s managed to turn countless challenges into opportunities to win.

Beginning in Chicago, he began his career as a member of John Cusack’s commedia-style theatre company. We talk about how the rigor of this group prepared him for anything, and as he shares with us here, there was a lot to be prepared for. From the jobs he’s lost, to the ones that have come to define his career, he’s unappologetically honest about what it takes to persevere and stay focused, even when everything seems to be falling apart. From a pre-audition pep-talk from John Travolta, to a meeting with Shonda Rhimes that lead to a direct offer, his journey proves that things always work themselves out, and often lead to beautiful, seemingly fortuitous, full-circle moments that make an artistic life worth the uncertainty and risk.

Regardless of where you are on your journey, whether you’re at a peak, or feel stuck in a valley, today’s conversation is for you. Full of encouragement and optimism, this bird’s-eye-view of a career is a reminder that things are always working out for good. Your good and for the good of great storytelling.

    MN.29.01.1988. Aspidistra & Lebanon

    MN.29.01.1988. Aspidistra & Lebanon
This news edition of the programme starts with a report that Radio Al Quds (The Holy One) is taking a far more active role. The station was first thought to be coming from Lebanon but our correspondent Joop Myers believes Southern Syria near to the Israeli border is more likely. The station is calling what they call "quizlings".  The station signs on with an electronic version of the song "Turkey in the Straw". In other news, Pete Myers reports on a new use for the Crowborough transmitter site which has now been dismantled and moved to Orfordness. We look at broadcasts to Cuba by the US, by a radio station called Radio Marti. An investigation has been launched into starting a TV Marti. Is Radio Marti thinking about FM? Ginger da Silva reports on a scientific expedition going between Russia and Canada. And we ended the show with a cryptic quiz using a number station and the news that TWR's has put away its musical box. Pat Gowen in the UK has a theory about CFC's and the ozone layer.

    SE212: Hit My Kitty

    SE212: Hit My Kitty

It's the gender bending episode to top all gender bending episodes, y'all. We've got New York City nightclub performer and comedian Marti Gould Cummings; the return of Sherry Vine & Josh Rosenzweig from Here TV; and, actor and director Christopher Logan up in here, up in here.

First up, Marti Gould Cummings drops by to tell us about how he went from his family's Maryland farm to take New York City by storm, befriending the city's Broadway and nightlife entertainers and quickly transforming himself into a unique, gender bending cabaret performer and comedian. He hosts four shows a week, has his own series of web shows, and despite being insanely busy, finds time for activism and he's calling out to his generation to wrap it up before you hit the kitty. You'll just have to listen to hear how that came to be. It's scandalous! Hear Marti at the 20:00 minute mark.

Then, we've got the return of our most-frequent Swish guest, the international phenomenon that is Miss Sherry Vine along with her HereTV boss and best friend Josh Rosenzweig. It's always a party when we get together with our old friends after one of Sherry's shows (she was performing at DC's Level One/Cobalt last Friday night) and together we talked about Sherry's newest parody's, originals, and her touring schedule, the return of her television variety show, She's Living for This, what's new at the all-gay network, and much more. Hear all the craziness with Sherry, Josh, Scott & Steve at the 52:58 minute mark.

After that, Scott chats with actor and director Christopher Logan. Known best for his role as Patty Melt in the cult classic movie Connie & Carla, Christopher has starred in tons of films and television shows and now he's produced an amazing coffee table book called, dr.a.g., featuring amazing photographs of drag queens from New York to Las Vegas to the queens of RuPaul's Drag Race (including Sherry Vine, too!). It's a great collection, created to support independent film projects and we recommend it highly. Listen in on Christopher at the 1:20:30 mark.

The boys also talk about the Inauguration, including the First Lady's bangs; what the gays think of vaginas; same-sex-coupled British monarchs may get to have their offspring claim the thrown; Lindsay Lohan just keeps diggin' a bigger hole; Hasbro is retiring one of the classic Monopoly pieces; It's a mega-show people...and we hope you'll join us for all the fun. Word.

Bio Ritmo - Salsa Pa’l Mundo

Bio Ritmo - Salsa Pa’l Mundo

Bio Ritmo - Salsa Pa’l Mundo
    (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) Electric Cowbell, 2011-12-15

Did you pass on La Verdad, the latest Bio Ritmo album released at the end of the summer on Electric Cowbell Records? If that's the case, then you've missed the Salsa album of the year, no less. The only letdown of this fantastic and frantic record is its length - under 40 minutes - definitively too short, but explainable by the fact that it's also available on a (heavily recommended) vinyl. Rei Alvarez, one of the main forces of the group, prepared for Paris DJs a mix of his old vinyls, the only kind of records he's got... and a he's got a lot of it!. It's a selection of music that has influenced Bio Ritmo, which doesn't include many tracks from the awesome Fania Records catalog, but rather focuses on its shadows, smaller and independent Salsa music that was released during the 70's and 80's. The one-hour long resulting mix is as killer as the album, with lots of very rare stuff, And we're as honored to have Bio Ritmo onboard of the Paris DJs podcast, as they were to be featured in the latest, Latin issue of Wax Poetics! I think I've already said that, but get the album, you don't hear amazing Salsa with psychedelic hints of ethio jazz, afrobeat or dub that often!!
