The Magnificat: Understanding The Song Of Mary

The Magnificat: Understanding The Song Of Mary

    What is the 'magnificat?'

The 'magnificat' is the name that we give to Mary's song in Luke 1, in which she declares that her soul 'magnifies the Lord.' In today's study, we will see that this is one of the most counter-cultural songs ever written.

    Questions That We'll Answer:

    1) In Luke 1, what news did the Angel give Mary? What was her response?

    2) Why was it necessary that the Messiah be born of a 'virgin?'

    3) What makes the 'magnificat' so counter-cultural? What does it declare?

    Greatest Story Ever Told

    Greatest Story Ever Told

This is our Christmas sermon, as we look at what Mary heard and experienced around the birth of Jesus. Simeon, Anna & the Wise Men all said wonderful things about who Jesus was and how important he would be to his people. We examine that as well as what it meant for us, that God loved us so much, he sent Jesus to earth.

    Mary’s Protest of Love

    Mary’s Protest of Love

John explores this wonderful intimate and somewhat radical moment in Luke between two women which results in the  “Magnificat”. He then uses Rachel Held Evans' work on the Shema and Love to explore what might life behind the Magnificat.

Finally use Eugene Peterson’s paraphrase to ask in what way are we bursting with God-news and joining the dance to the song of God this Christmas?

    He finished by asking himself
    -         How does Mary’s song help me to see God’s hesed love at play today?

    -         What God-news might I be invited to burst with?

    -         How might we join the dance of the song of God?

    A Father & His Family - Audio

    A Father & His Family - Audio
Consider the imagery that comes with Kingdom. Majesty. Reverence. Awe. Sometimes that brings about feelings of coldness and separation. There’s a King, the Mighty Leader, the One reserved for our worship, and then there’s the rest of us. There’s the pomp and circumstance, and we're merely spectators lining up on the road aching for just the sight of our King. Distance. Him and us. That’s the imagery I can personally sometimes feel. Not our King though, Friends. Our King is a personable Father.

    A Song

    A Song
“She gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger…” With these simple words the Bible announced the birth of Jesus. Surrounding this announcement are incredible scenes with beautiful messages that transcend time and place. 2,000 years later the true value of these messages is sometimes lost. It is covered and cluttered by tradition and addition. This series is about returning to the primary purposes of Jesus’ birth narrative. It’s about reaching back in time to remember the true importance of the birth of him who we celebrate. It’s simply Christmas.
