Mind Yo' Business S5:E06 - The Business of Creating Bridges Between Government, Community, and Business Owners

Mind Yo' Business S5:E06 - The Business of Creating Bridges Between Government, Community, and Business Owners
The month of June saw record temperatures and tempers rise throughout the Midwest.   It only seemed fitting to bring in the Greater Bloomington Chamber of Commerce President, Eric Spoonmore.  Having studied and loved the world of politics, Eric knew early on that he wanted to be part of shaping and supporting a community.  He was always interested in working as a City Manager but the State of Indiana doesn't allow that position to exist.

Eric's journey has taught him that the business sector is the stable foundation of your community, not the government, and how important local voting is within your community. This affects everything from tax dollars, roads, services, not just political standings.  His stories of steering the local community through COVID, while serving on the County Council, and his transition into the Chamber demonstrate that hard work and listening to others really does pay off.

While Eric might be a bit disappointed that Miranda Lambert wouldn't be joining us, even though he was playing her latest music while on vacation, this episode has  passion and humor that you don't want to miss.

S1E11 - Clear blue water and deep dirty problems, how the Florida Keys are cleaning their polluted waterways

Developers created miles and miles of beautiful waterfront coastline, but that also created water so polluted you couldn’t sit outside — the smell was putrid. But Monroe County realized that water was their lifeblood. Listen and hear very forward-thinking ideas that are bringing back fish life into now clean waters —-one canal at a time.

Episode 44: NR Hiller Design, Inc,

Episode 44: NR Hiller Design, Inc,
In certain circles, this week's guest is considered a rock star. While she humbly disagrees, we're impressed with the fact that this author, teacher, artist, scholar and woodworker has chosen Bloomington as her home. Since 1995, Nancy Hiller has taught cabinetmaking, furniture, and finishing courses, authored five books and run NR Hiller Design, a one woman design and build operation. We talk to Nancy about how a woodworking course taken out of spite led her down the path to what would become her life's work and how being a homeowner provided comfort and satisfaction to her as a single woman.

Also, we throw back to At Home in Bloomington Episode 24, in honor of women doing what they want to do! Scouts BSA Troop 1148 has been lighting up the scouting scene and providing opportunities for girls to camp, hike, make and learn outside and in the community in a way mostly only boys had done in the past. And in our REAL-List segment, Deb shares the realities of a home remodeling project.

    Episode 43: WFHB

    Episode 43: WFHB
What exemplifies the word "community" more than a volunteer run, listener supported radio station whose mission is to provide an open forum for the exchange of ideas and issues, and to celebrate and increase the local cultural diversity? We can't think of anything better than WFHB! Discussions for a community radio station started in 1975 and aired 18 years later, with the Herman Wells' gong being the first broadcast sound. (Because doesn't every univesity president need a gong to preside with? We think so.) Today, WFHB is run by over 100 volunteers who do everything from write the daily local news to host shows like Saturday's Child, the station's longest running program. This weekly performance is broadcast live from the Monroe County History Center and is free to attend (with free coffee and bagels!!). Saturday's Child is just one of many shows you can hear on WFHB. Join us as we talk with Emily Jackson (better known as DJ EJ) about Bloomington's own volunteer powered, listener supported, community radio station, WFHB!

Also, we throw back to At Home in Bloomington Episode 41 (not too far of a throw), when we spoke with Michael White of Community Access Television Services, or CATS. Another community station, in the television world, they are also great partners with WFHB in providing local information like no one else in the community. And in our REAL-List segment, Deb gives us a pep talk and helpful advice on what to do if you get turned down for a mortgage.

    Episode 42: Bloomington Playwrights Project

    Episode 42: Bloomington Playwrights Project
This episode is epic. And while that's probably not the first time we've said that, we really mean it this time. Why? Because co-host, Karan, guessed who our guest was after only a few clues! Major awards, cheers and snaps were given. But you don't have to guess. Here's the scoop. For 39 years, Bloomington has been home to the only professional theater in the state of Indiana dedicated to new plays! The Bloomington Playwrights Project (or BPP, as it's affectionately known) showcases new work from local and national playwrights, where they have an opportunity to develop new works and improve upon it using audience feedback. This opportunity isn't just limited to professionals, though. The BPP also has programming suited to aspiring artists between the ages of 5-16. Their Youth Education Program gives kids a chance to experience the many different aspects of theater, from the basic elements of acting to playwriting to the humor of sketch comedy to lively musical performance. The BPP also partners with the Monroe County Community School Corporations after-school program to offer different parts of the world of theatre to local students! Join us as we chat with Producing Artistic Director of the Bloomington Playwrights Project, Chad Rabinovitz, about how lucky Bloomington is to have this opportunity in our own back yard!

Also, we throw back to At Home in Bloomington Episode 27, when we spoke to Switchyard Brewing. BPP actually shares a wall with Switchyard and an evening at the theater plus a local brew is the perfect combination. And in our REAL-List segment, Deb shares secrets for cheap ways to prepare your home for sale. it shouldn't cost more than some beer and pizza!
