    National Bagel Day: 01/15/24

    National Bagel Day: 01/15/24

January 15th is celebrated as National Bagel Day in the United States. This day is dedicated to the delicious and versatile bagel, a ring-shaped bread that is boiled and then baked, creating a chewy texture and distinctive flavor.

Bagels originated in Eastern Europe and were brought to the United States by Jewish immigrants in the late 19th century. Today, bagels are a beloved breakfast and brunch food, enjoyed with a variety of toppings such as cream cheese, lox, jam, butter, or eggs.

National Bagel Day is an opportunity to celebrate this classic food and to explore the many different varieties and flavors of bagels that are available. Whether you prefer plain, sesame, everything, or something more adventurous like blueberry or chocolate chip, there is a bagel out there to suit everyone's tastes.

To celebrate National Bagel Day, people may visit their local bagel shop to try a new flavor or topping, or try making their own bagels at home. People may also participate in bagel-related activities, such as attending bagel-themed events or sharing their favorite bagel recipes or stories.

Overall, National Bagel Day is a fun and delicious holiday that celebrates one of America's favorite breakfast foods. It is a chance to appreciate the rich and satisfying flavors of a freshly baked bagel and to explore the many different ways in which this classic food can be enjoyed.

    83. Summer Meditation: The Wonder of an Onion, with Wes Willison

    83. Summer Meditation: The Wonder of an Onion, with Wes Willison

In this special episode, we depart from the usual interview format and offer you some moments of guided meditation instead. While Forrest is in Ireland interviewing people for future episodes of the podcast, Wes Willison is stepping in to walk you through something called “The Onion Session." Drawn from the book The Supper of the Lamb, by Robert Farrar Capon, this is a guided meditation that is meant to focus our attention on one small and humble object. This soul-and-mind opening exercise helps us to perceive the wonder contained in an onion—and to appreciate it as one part of creation loved by God.

Just a note: You might want to wait to listen to this episode for when you’ve got some down time. For this meditation exercise you’ll need an onion, a small knife, a cutting board, and about half an hour of uninterrupted time in a quiet space.

    Guest: Wes Willison

Protecting Farmland, One Match at a Time

Protecting Farmland, One Match at a Time

Developers have purchased millions of acres of U.S. farmland and ranchland, a trend that increasingly threatens a future of sustainable agriculture and food systems. And the challenge isn’t going away. Nearly 40 percent of this land is in the hands of farmers, ranchers, and landowners who are 65 or older. In response, American Farmland Trust (AFT) has for years helped new farmers gain access to land that might otherwise transition away from the agricultural industry, at the local to national scale.

In this episode of No Farms No Future, two young farmers in New York state tell the story of how the AFT-led partnership, Farmland for a New Generation New York, played a role in them partnering with non-farming landowners who owned acres of rural land and wanted to find someone to farm it. You’ll also meet Erica Goodman, national director of Farms for a New Generation, who has a personal history that intersects with her AFT work.

No Farms No Future is a podcast created through a collaboration between Heritage Radio Network, American Farmland Trust, and The Food Voice.
