When you think of the most deadly people in history the names that pop into your mind are typically your power hungry sociopaths... you know... Hitler, Stalin, Mao... Pol Pot.  If you turn back the clock or know your history you might toss up names like Gengis Kahn, Tamerlane, Julius Caesar or Ashurbanipal II. You might also consider Leopold II , Charles V, or Ivan The Terrible. Whatever you come up with, its typically a head of state or at least someone who with military power. You don't think of a poor softspoken peasant with little education that has some interesting ideas about plants. Nonetheless... one man... Trofim Lycenko may have been responsible for more deaths than at least half the people on your top ten list... and chances are you probably haven't heard of him. If you have, then you might not know the whole story. This is a cautionary tale of what happens when politics and science become one and the same.  Millions of people died directly because of his false ideas. But it's deeper than that. What happens when the idea of "truth" itself is called into question? What happens when a state adopts a view of reality that is contrary to reason itself?  What happens when contradicting an "official" narrative guarantees losing your job, your freedom or even your life?  Could you stand up to that or would you just look the other way? In the Gospel of John, Pilate famously asks: "What is Truth?" To live in the Soviet Union was to ask yourself that question on a daily basis.  The vast majority of people quietly went along with it. Why?  After spending nearly a decade in Stalin's Gulag and another twenty years as a "free"  Soviet citizen,  Alexander Solzhenitsyn wrote:

"The permanent lie becomes the only safe form of existence, in the same way as betrayal. Every wag of the tongue can be overheard by someone, every facial expression observed by someone. Therefore every word, if it does not have to be a direct lie, is nonetheless obliged not to contradict the general, common lie."

Equal time allocated, rapid debate. Each team will be allocated circa 25 minutes total time, monitored by JB. When each team is talking then time will automatically count down. If the team runs out of time then the remaining time is handed to the opposing team.

Audience: Fund selectors, family offices, multi-managers, advisers, allocators, gatekeepers and distributors. We appreciate that there is already a high volume of podcasts and that fund selectors are heavily marketed to, however we believe that within this niche there is little competition and significant demand for content of this type. Given this gap I believe that it is the time to use the format of a podcast to bring together the community to discuss hot topics that are all too often led by partisan echo chambers and only discussed in opposing vacuums!

1) Can anyone truly be a passive investor? Aren’t we all different shades of active? Few buy a naive portfolio, whether it is market cap, factor investing, systematic strategies, SmartBETA?

2) Have we reached or will we reach “peak passive”? Did passive just get lucky with Big Tech or is the success of index investing just common sense?

3) Thinking the behavioural biases at play, is the concentration of assets around Star Managers the best argument for Active or Passive?

We’ve heard a lot from the left about “disinformation” in recent years – and no wonder. It’s a term with Marxist origins. In fact, the original “disinformation office” was created by none other than Joseph Stalin. Indeed, it was Stalin who inspired George Orwell’s “Ministry of Truth.”

Now, the Biden administration has assembled its own Disinformation Governance Board.

Nina Jankowicz, a smug and cartoonish figure given to singing on Tik Tok, has been tapped as the new board’s leader.  Touted as an internationally recognized expert on disinformation, she’s got a funny way of showing it.

Jankowicz has disseminated false or misleading information about subjects including the Russiagate hoax, Hunter Biden’s laptop, and masking during Covid. She’s uniformly and predictably partisan. And she has yet to take accountability for any of the falsehoods she’s propagated.

The Biden administration insists the new board’s mission is to combat disinformation. But based on its leader’s record, the office seems less prepared to defend against disinformation than to spread it. Just like the Marxist prototype.
