61. Pacific Crest Trail, Then & Now. New podcast series
The first episode of a new podcast series which you'll find here
https://pctpodcast.buzzsprout.com/
Twenty years ago we hiked this 2,600 mile wilderness trail from Mexico to Canada, across baking deserts and snowy mountain passes. At the time we were told it was the 'classic era' of the PCT. Now numbers have risen from a few hundred to thousands.
More at PCTpodcast.com
I made recordings with people along the way, but lost them until recently. Now I've produced a limited podcast series recalling at this classic time and also looking at the PCT today with people who know it well. We'll hear from a couple who hiked the trail twenty years after us and only just made it to the border as forest fires engulfed the area.
This is the first episode of that series and other episodes are also live now.

E28S3 Long Distance Trail Riding with Gillian Larson
E28S3 Long Distance Trail Riding with Gillian Larson
What does it take to ride 2600 miles on horseback? How do you prepare meals? Haul water? Care for your horse? Best ask someone who has logged thousands of miles long distance riding. Gillian Larson is that person. She’s accumulated over 10,000 miles riding the backcountry and what’s more, with the same two horses. Gillian chats with Russell and Alan about her many adventures and how she is now teaching others how to “thru-ride” trails around the West.

Wandern: Auf dem Nord-Süd-Trail einmal durch Deutschland
A Mother’s Intuition Leads to Rescue
A German hiker has a dream of hiking the entire Pacific Crest Trail, from the Mexico border to the Canada border. All 2,650 miles, alone. Katharina Gröne, aka City Girl, met numerous hikers along her journey, and made great memories. But quitting wasn’t in her vocabulary, and even though several people suggested it was too late in the season to continue, she kept going until she couldn’t go any farther. But, thanks to a mother’s intuition, Katharina lived to hike another trail.
We also speak to Cheri Higman, chairperson of Seattle Mountain Rescue, about the challenges faced by those hiking the Pacific Crest Trail. Cheri also shares tips on how to stay safe on a day-long or multi-day hike.
PCT: the start
Blissful Hiker spends time off-trail looking back at one of her favorite thru-hikes, the Pacific Crest Trail and learning about the meaning of grace.
In this episode:
- We're introduced to trail angels Kurt and Holly in Bellingham, Washington and learns about the value of paying it forward.
- She rides up to Hart's Pass with thirty other hikers and finds their reasons for being there are varied, but always full of hope and joy.
- The start is actually 31 miles short of the Canadian Border, and because the United States won't allow entry via the trail, hikers have to hike north before hiking south.
- The start is on a clear, sunny Chamber-of-Commerce day on easy, beautiful trail and is told she will be spending the entire upcoming five months smiling.
- She realizes the birds she loved in Washington are the same in Montana.
- Two Bear Air Rescue, the people who pulled her off trail, sends her a gold medal to remind her that "every day is a gift and to never take it for granted."
MUSIC: Poema del Pastor Coya by Angel Lasala as played by Alison Young, flute and Vicki Seldon, piano.

To Measure a Mile: A Film by Chris Carter on His Pilgrimage Along the Pacific Crest Trail
Chris Carter grew up the son of missionaries in Kenya, Africa. He moved to the United States to study, climb, learn. In 2018 Chris took the physical and spiritual challenge of hiking the 2,650 mile Pacific Crest Trail in the western USA. The film he created grabbed me from the first sounds of a camp stove lighting up.
I welcome Chris to The Happiness Quotient to discuss the journey, about the friendships formed, and about the process of creating this incredibly moving and powerful film called To Measure a Mile. I love the film and you will love it, as well.
Excerpts from the film will weave together with the interview done with Chris from his home in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

The Art of Thru-Hiking: Alina "Abstract" Drufovka
From the age of 13, Alina Drufovka dreamed of hiking the Appalachian Trail. She spent years thinking about her next hike, but her long walks haven’t been an escape or a cure-all, they've played a very formative role in her front-country life through her relationships, her identity, and in her burgeoning artistic career.
Alina “Abstract” Drufovka is a Colombian-American painter and illustrator based out of Philadelphia, PA. She has hiked the Appalachian Trail (2015 & 2017), Israel National Trail (2018), and Pacific Crest Trail (2019).
