J'ai eu l'occasion de prêcher mon premier sermon en français à l'Eglise Protestante Evangélique de Cognin sur le Psaume 1:
1 Heureux l’homme qui ne marche pas selon le conseil des méchants,
Qui ne s’arrête pas sur le chemin des pécheurs,
Et qui ne s’assied pas sur le banc des moqueurs,
2 Mais qui trouve son plaisir dans la loi de l’Éternel,
Et qui médite sa loi jour et nuit !
3 Il est comme un arbre planté près d’un cours d’eau,
Qui donne son fruit en son temps,
Et dont le feuillage ne se flétrit pas :
Tout ce qu’il fait réussit.
4 Il n’en est pas ainsi des méchants :
Ils sont comme la paille que le vent dissipe.
5 C’est pourquoi les méchants ne résistent pas au (jour du) jugement,
Ni les pécheurs dans la communauté des justes ;
6 Car l’Éternel connaît la voie des justes,
Et la voie des pécheurs mène à la perdition.

Two centuries ago, people could die from a simple scratch. It was the pre-antibiotic era when infections killed babies within hours, a cold could turn deadly within days, and people survived injuries through luck alone.
Now a pill can prevent strep throat from turning into scarlet fever and antibiotics keep surgery safe. But because bacteria evolve and mutate so quickly, many drugs are powerless against new strains. The world needs new and better antibiotics.
In this episode of One World, One Health, Anand Anandkumar, co-founder and chief executive officer of Bugworks, explains what his company is doing to help discover and develop new antibiotics. Antibiotics are not big money makers for pharmaceutical companies, so Bugworks is putting together funding from governments, charities, and a new kind of motivated investor.

During a time when antibacterial soaps and wipes are flying off shelves, why are people cultivating microbes at home? Melissa Metrick (NYU Urban Farm Lab/Nutrition and Food Studies Department) and Wythe Marschall talk about how the COVID-19 pandemic is bringing more and more people into growing food at home—not only via backyard or window-sill gardening, but also via growing their own sourdough starters for bread and preserving food through pickling and canning. Melissa (a long-time sourdough starter enthusiast who has moonlighted in urban homesteading and food preservation) and Wythe (a novice baker) discuss the tension between “good” and “bad” microbes. We explore these different invisible living microbes that are all around us. Some “good microbes” we cultivate to make food delicious or preserve food.
