    Carol (2015): CATE BLANCHETT & ROONEY MARA {Part 3}

    Carol (2015): CATE BLANCHETT & ROONEY MARA {Part 3}

    In this episode, Angie and Steffi’s “Carol” discussion comes to an end. They discuss “Carol” being overlooked by the Oscars, their lackluster marketing campaign, gay shaking, and why the movie will forever be a favorite for people with taste - including you, Harold. This is part 2 of 2 of our era breakdown episodes, and the final part of our “Carol” episodes.

    Continuing where we left off with tea - we get into some MAJOR TEA in this episode, including: Cate Blanchett’s controversial Variety interview, Harvey Weinstein, Rooney Mara & category fraud, and JUSTICE FOR CAROL (2015). We also hyper analyze “Carol”’s marketing material including that exquisite teaser trailer, the emotional first trailer…and that really sketchy second trailer. Plus, “Harold, they’re lesbians”.

    LOGLINE: Carol is a 2015 romantic period drama film directed by Todd Haynes. The screenplay by Phyllis Nagy is based on the 1952 romance novel The Price of Salt by Patricia Highsmith (republished as Carol in 1990). The film stars Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Sarah Paulson, Jake Lacy, and Kyle Chandler. Set in New York City during the early 1950s, Carol tells the story of a forbidden affair between an aspiring female photographer and an older woman going through a difficult divorce.

    Carol (2015): CATE BLANCHETT & ROONEY MARA {Part 1}

    For our final Holiday Diva Movie of the season, everything comes full circle. This week, Angie and Steffi discuss “Carol” (2015, directed by Todd Haynes), starring our divas of the week: Cate Blanchett & Rooney Mara.

    Because there is so much to talk about when it comes to the masterpiece that is “Carol”, we have decided to divide our discussion into two parts. In part one, we review the movie via various scene discussions. We then end the episode sharing what we think Cate Blanchett & Rooney Mara’s Oscar Clips should be and giving our Letterboxd rating.

    During our review, we ask the classic Carol question: Did Carol leave the gloves on purpose? We also discuss if Carol clocked Therese immediately, repression vs. not knowing one’s sexuality, the film’s mise en scène, the emotionally stirring score, and the genius of Todd Haynes’ cinema. And Cate Blanchett’s back.

    This episode takes many liberties with history, the Midnight Pals characters are not necessarily representative of the real-life authors with whom they share names (except when they are), and Submitted for the Approval of the Midnight Pals should on no account be regarded as a historical source... but...

    • The story that the real Mary Shelley had sex on her mother's grave is often dismissed as myth, but happens to be surprisingly plausible—see this unrolled social media thread by the London Vagina Museum: https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1588162489858117634.html
    • Shelley, despite centuries of historical gal-pal-ization, was certainly bisexual and probably did have an affair with Jane Williams, the widow of the man who drowned alongside Percy. See https://bi.org/en/articles/famous-bis-mary-shelley
    • William Huskisson, member of parliament for Liverpool, was indeed killed by the first train locomotive, Stevenson's Rocket, during a technical demonstration. He'd probably have survived if he hadn't stopped halfway across the tracks to dither over whether to go left or right, which ought to be a lesson for all politicians. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Huskisson#Death

    #10 Sommer, Sonne und ein Mord

    #10 Sommer, Sonne und ein Mord

    „Nur der Mond war Zeuge" der Engländerin Josephine Tey gilt als ein Meisterwerk der Spannungsliteratur - obwohl es gar keine Leiche gibt. Denn um Spannung aufzubauen, brauche es viel mehr als einen Mord, sagt Kultur-Experte Edwin Baumgartner im Gespräch mit Host Petra Tempfer. Freilich gibt es auch gute Krimis oder Thriller, bei denen es um mysteriöse Todesfälle oder Serienkiller:innen geht. Die Kunst dabei ist jedoch laut Baumgartner stets, nicht nur die Auflösung eines Kriminalfalles, sondern eine Geschichte in der Geschichte zu erzählen - zum Beispiel Historisches oder Familiendramen hineinzupacken. Deshalb sind Krimis nicht automatisch Schundlektüre, sondern haben oft ein hohes literarisches Niveau.

    Wie ein Kriminalfall schließlich gelöst wird, kann über „Whodunit" oder „Howcatchem" passieren. Also „Wer hat`s getan?" oder „Wie fängt man ihn?", wobei Letzteres besser im Film funktioniert. Paradebeispiel ist die Fernsehserie „Inspector Columbo": Der/die Zuschauer:in weiß, wer die Täter:innen sind, und begleitet den/die Detektiv:in dabei, wie diese:r die Mörder schnappt. Es gibt allerdings auch Bücher, die auf dem „Howcatchem"-Prinzip basieren. Und selbst für Menschen, die keine Krimis mögen, hat Baumgartner Strandlektüre-Tipps.

    Aus dem Archiv der Wiener Zeitung vom 31. Oktober 1866 (Seite 6):

    In der Wiener Zeitung ging es auch manchmal wie in einem Krimi zu. Am 31. Oktober 1866, also in dem Jahr, in dem „Schuld und Sühne“ des russischen Autors Fjodor Michailowitsch Dostojewski entstand, schrieb sie unter dem Titel „Ein Drama im Waldrevier“ auf Seite 6: Am 30. Juni dieses Jahres vormittags gegen 8 Uhr ging der gräflich Hänkel`sche Förster Otto Babler mit seinem Forstgehülfen Anton Amon und dem Revierförster Johann Hartner auf die Hohenwart-Alpe, um auf Wildschützen zu passen und kehrte […] in die sogenannte Grünhütte ein. Nachmittags gegen 5 Uhr verließen die Genannten die Hütte, gingen der Höhe zu und hörten bald darauf einen Schuss. Als der Rauch sich verzogen hatte, erblickten sie einen Menschen, den sie darauf verfolgten. […] Als Babler sah, dass der Wildschütz davonlief, befahl er dem Jäger Amon, demselben in die Füße zu schießen. […] Hierauf rief Babler dem Amon zu: „Noch einmal schießen!“ Da spannte denn Amon den linksseitigen Lauf seiner Doppelbüchse, zielte, wie er selbst angibt, tief hinter den Füßen des Wildschützen, drückte los, der Schuss fiel, und der Wildschütz stürzte nach vorwärts zusammen, worauf die drei Jäger den Verunglückten […] liegen ließen. Dieser starb bereits am 1. Juli und wurde als ein verheirateter gräflich Egger`scher Bergknappe erkannt.

    STRANGERS ON A TRAIN Special Edition Quinnisode: Episode 110: Babs!

    WoHos!

    Well, as Quinn journeys back to her homeland for a few weeks, we thought it might be fun to talk about another Hitchcock film. This one just happens to be my fave. I wanted to save this one until June 30, which is the 72nd anno of this classic flick, but as Quinn has, (and maybe some of you WoHos have) some driving ahead of you this week and weekend, I thought I would release it a little earlier. Look. You're Welcome.

    The Christina & Quinn chat is long again. Jump to minute 11:55 if you want to get right into the film.
    The weather, freaky deaths/accidents, Quinn's dad's brain tumor (that he had when she was young), Quinn's childhood pet dog, Jake, how dogs see us, how Christina has the best cat (sorry Y'all cat owners that I got the best one). But also, not sorry. You get it.

    We discuss Robert Walker's performance and life cut short by alcoholism, what big fans we both are of Patricia Hitchcock, the humor in the film, how much Bruno is not okay, whether or not Bruno set the whole thing up, homoerotic subtext, shadows, and popping some kid's balloon with a cigarette. Seriously, how great would that be?

    Next up on the Quinnisode: GASLIGHT from 1944.

    The American Friend

    The American Friend
    One minute you're playing expert spoiler to would-be forgers at an art auction, the next minute you're saving one such forger before he falls to his death off a speeding bullet train. As disgraced British Prime Minister Boris Johnson would say, "...them's the breaks!" This week's episode, perhaps the most special in our history, has us palling alongside a delightful pack of miscreants with 1977's The American Friend! But before we get around to our latest entry in our series of crime films, this week's Blue Plate Special finds us contrasting the listless Airport 1975 with the eclectic brilliance of The Red Shoes, Menace II Society, and Moulin Rouge! before celebrating the lives of James Caan and Tony Sirico. Upon checking off all our boxes and stocking up on all the essentials, we finally hit the open road with none other than director of The American Friend himself, Wim Wenders- who joined us live and in person at the Huffman Brothers Productions Studios! Listen as the German New Wave icon dishes on the arduous production process with madman Dennis Hopper, his tempestuous collaboration with Patricia Highsmith, where his relationship with Francis Ford Coppola currently stands, and what he remembers about Caldwell County's own Willard Blevins from the early 1980s. We were incredibly honored to have Mr. Wenders on the pod and I think our conversation with him lived up to the hype! Feel free to skip to 2:33:35 for our conversation with Wim Wenders and 3:06:05 for the beginning of our audio commentary. Carol

    Carol
    What better way to follow up last week's episode on an elegant period piece drama about the mid-20th century (see Jackie) than yet another exploration of the immutable soft screams of love gained and lost with Carol, Todd Haynes's 2015 masterpiece? But before we get there...this week's Blue Plate Special has us talking some football and sharing some belated joy over the Las Vegas Raiders' remarkable Thanksgiving Day overtime victory against the Dallas Cowboys, taking issue with the general existence of the new Disney Plus release of the legacyquel Home Sweet Home Alone, and finally settling once and for all what exactly qualifies something as a "Christmas movie." Upon finally arriving on the firmly closed doorstep (real Harge Heads know) of the week, we dive into what makes Haynes one of the singular artists of his generation while discussing how the contrasting presences of stars Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara make for a most compelling duo.
