    Miranda *the* Velvet Outlaw: No Doesn't Mean Never.

    Miranda *the* Velvet Outlaw: No Doesn't Mean Never.

    I sat down with Miranda Deaton, the owner and creative behind Velvet Outlaw. This is an episode you need to listen to the end! As we both can relate to being new small business owners, we get deep and vulnerable from the very beginning. Miranda candidly filled me in on her story, which began by growing up in Michigan, moving to Kentucky for college, and how she has stayed, making Louisville her home. Her grit, perseverance, and stubbornness embodies the motto: "No doesn't mean never. It just means not right now." We both share a similar history of going through the life motions of going to college, chased unfulfilling careers, and then leaving those jobs in the last year to start our own businesses. We touch on tough topics, like the *real* hard work behind starting and running your own business. Miranda shares her toolkit and tricks for maintaining sanity on a daily basis. We talk about how being queer has become an instrumental part of the Velvet Outlaw brand and products that get produced by Miranda. Through our conversation, she realizes what projects have made her feel like a successful business owner that has “made it.” Give this episode a listen to get to know Miranda better.

    Lise Deguire: Flashback Girl

    Lise Deguire: Flashback Girl
    Lise Deguire is an attractive woman. Her kind eyes belie what she has lived through. When Lise was four years old, her mother used a household solvent used to start a barbecue. It exploded, engulfing the entire porch in flames. Her mother ran through the fire and jumped in the lake to cool her burns. She left Lise standing in the midst of the inferno. Lise who was a beautiful, bubbly, child with blond curls suffered third degree burns over 65% of her body. The ensuing years would be round after round of brutal burn treatments and skin removal resulting in heavy scarring. Lise reflects back on her relationship with her mother and notes that:   "She was not emotionally equipped to be a mother. She just wasn't. And some mothers aren't... One of the things I've learned since my book has  come out is there is a lot of people who had mothers who were not very good at it."   Lise describes her parents as “outrageously flawed, gifted, and iconoclastic parents.” And as such, they were often wrapped up in their own lives and drama. Lise had numerous experiences that would have stopped most people. Perhaps most traumatically, her beloved brother committed suicide. That is what ultimately led her to a life dedicated to making a difference in mental health. "I think it made me a better person. And I help a lot of people now."   Coming Soon! The Book. Episode 75: Historical Breakdown to Breakthrough Stories: Thomas Edison

    Episode 75: Historical Breakdown to Breakthrough Stories: Thomas Edison
    In this episode, I will be sharing an article written by Dick Kazan on the life difficulties of Thomas Edison. It was published in Kazan Today on August 2, 2011.  The teaching tip that is offered by Kazan on Edison’s life is Edison didn’t let a lack of money, lack of formal education, deafness or the failure of an invention stop him. He persevered. Might perseverance make a difference in your life? One more attempt to get a job or a promotion? One more attempt to start a business or close a deal? How about another bold pursuit of your dreams? I am your host, Marci Nettles. I have had a lifetime of opportunities where I had the choice to Breakdown or Breakthrough. It is my hope this Podcast may become your light in the darkness, as you listen to the stories of people I consider “heroes.” Each one had a point where they too had to choose to either Breakdown or Breakthrough! Thank you for listening! For a copy of the article shared in this episode, go to Find Marci at

    Lessons Learned from an Ultramarathon

    Lessons Learned from an Ultramarathon

    There's an ultramarathon called the Barkley Marathons that neither you nor I will ever run. It is an endurance race that only few will dare attempt. But we all are on a journey. You could say we're running an ultramarathon. It's called life.

    Perhaps we could learn something from the Barkley's. We'll talk about it in today's podcast.

    All About Living Faith

    All About Living Faith

     2 Corinthians 5:5-7

    5 Now the one who has fashioned us for this very purpose is God, who has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. 6 Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord.7 For we live by faith, not by sight.

    Hebrews 11:1

    Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.

    Living Faith 2023

    "We live by faith, not by sight."

      1. Faith must be built upon the promise of God.

     2 Cor 1:20 “For no matter how many promises God has made, they are "Yes" in Christ. And so through him the "Amen" is spoken by us to the glory of God.

      2. Faith must be activated in the present.

       3. Faith must be shown through the life

     James 2:18 18 But someone will say, “You have faith; I have deeds. ”Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds.

    4. Faith must be tested.

              James 1:2-4  Consider it pure joy, my brothers, when you encounter trials of many kinds because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance.Allow perseverance to finish its work, so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

     5. Faith will be rewarded by God.

             James 1:12 Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.

               Revelation 2:10 Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.

    SFN is a dad to dad mentoring program for fathers raising children with special needs. Many of the 500+ SFN Mentor Fathers, who are raising kids with special needs, have said: "I wish there was something like this when we first received our child's diagnosis. I felt so isolated. There was no one within my family, at work, at church or within my friend group who understood or could relate to what I was going through."

    SFN Mentor Fathers share their experiences with younger dads closer to the beginning of their journey raising a child with the same or similar special needs. The SFN Mentor Fathers do NOT offer legal or medical advice, that is what lawyers and doctors do. They simply share their experiences and how they have made the most of challenging situations.

    James Perdue - Your Past Doesn't Have A Future But You Do

    James Perdue - Your Past Doesn't Have A Future But You Do

    ❤️ Superconscious Success Series 💜

    Host: Jennifer Matthews

    2021 Superconscious Success Summit : Interview with James Perdue

    James was a normal 19-year-old with expectation of playing professional baseball, the major leagues. He was attending Martin Methodist College in Pulaski, Tennessee on a baseball scholarship. He had the attitude of being invincible. After only being in college for two week and playing one college game in the fall, unexpected tragedy came a calling.

    On September 11, 1983, James became a quadriplegic, dislocating three vertebrae in his neck, from playing a football game. The doctor said, "James, I'm sorry. You'll never walk again and you might be paralyzed from your neck down." Later, the doctor advised his family to place him in a nursing home; he would be too much of a burden for them to take care.

    Hear how Dr. Perdue worked hard to achieve success as a teacher and coach. He has been awarded Fox 17 Top Teacher of the Week 2005, Teacher of the Year 2002, as well as, Coach of the Year 2006 and 2000. He received the Jo Andrews Award 1995 and the Hal Ramer Award 1991 both for overcoming adversity. Recently, he received his doctorate degree, in May 2011, from Tennessee State University. His demonstration of not giving up and striving through major challenges is apparent. Dr. Perdue knows he can help others pass through to the other side of tragedies to become triumph and become survivor of difficulties.

    • How James was able to become the Professor of Perseverance after such a tragic accident;
    • Why forgiveness is so important during these times of adversity, especially that of ourselves;
    • How discovering your purpose will help you to keep you motivated to stay the course;
    • The importance of developing a support system that stands by you during these times;
    • How to maintain a positive attitude and mindset during these times; and
    • How you can take action even though you may think that all your opportunities faded after the incident.

    Finishing Strong: In the Home Stretch of Raising Kids

    Finishing Strong: In the Home Stretch of Raising Kids

    What used to be noisy family chaos at dinnertime now becomes mom, dad, and the youngest blinking at each other over meatloaf. How do we navigate changing family dynamics as, one by one, the kids leave home? Is it ok to parent one child differently than their siblings? In this episode, we encourage moms to "finish strong," having perseverance in that home stretch toward the empty nest.

    069: Keep Going... They Will Come

    069: Keep Going... They Will Come

    Most new ideas, plans, designs and initiatives die a quick death when they meet resistance or crickets from the group. But often, the most beautiful things lie on the other side if we're willing to stick to what we believe and push through.

    Thanks for listening to today's episode. If you've been enjoying these one of the best thing you can do is tell a fellow entrepreneur or business leader. You spreading the word helps me help more people. Thanks so much.
