“Gift Aid, yes people know about it (but) they still dont understand it… there is about £750m unclaimed in Gift Aid every year, split between smaller charities unable to claim or dont have the skills to do it and higher rate tax-payers not really understanding … how they could be claiming an additional 25% on the gross (donation) in their tax returns.” Our guest today is Anna Josse, Founder and CEO of Prism the Gift Fund. Prism’s mission is to increase the flow of funds into the charitable sector, through creating efficiencies in the process of giving. What is Philanthropy? A Conversation with Dr. Sal Alaimo

What is Philanthropy? A Conversation with Dr. Sal Alaimo
Dr. Sal Alaimo is a professor and teaches in nonprofit administration and philanthropy and evaluation.  In this conversation, Sal and I talk about the role of nonprofits and giving in our society.  An experienced nonprofit leader and evaluator, Sal has a passion for growing nonprofit leaders and exploring the role of giving in our society.

Robert Payton said that philanthropy is "Voluntary action for the public good." Any giving intended for the public good is a philanthropic good. Sal embodies this in his work.  In addition to teaching and consulting, Sal uses the medium of film to explore the meaning of philanthropy and giving.

"What is philanthropy?"  Sal's first film, he explores the concept of giving within the American context.  The film is a feature length documentary that portrays and discusses the concept of giving  through a critical lens and a variety of perspectives. Contributors to the documentary include; actor Mike Farrell, NFL quarterback Alex Smith, Evelyn Lauder from the Estee' Lauder Companies, Civil Rights Leader Dr. William G. Anderson, Nell Newman, co-founder of Newman's Own Organics, US Senator Charles Grassley, as well as leading scholars and average citizens.

In his second film, "Sew What?" Sal explores the mutual benefit of what we, as individuals gain from our support of nonprofits - relationships, social connection, skills, values, and perhaps a changed perspectives.

We also explore the need for nonprofits and foundations to value and implement evaluations and for evaluators to help build evaluation capacity. Sal encourages nonprofits to ask for evaluation support if it is not included in a proposal and that evaluation actually a program expense. He also provides a thoughtful critique of the role of foundations in solving the intractable problems of our society. It will take nonprofits, foundations and community members who understand their communities all working together to solve the root causes of our problems.

    Dr. Sal Alaimo Bio
Salvatore Alaimo is an Associate Professor in the School of Public, Nonprofit and Health Administration at Grand Valley State University, in Grand Rapids, Michigan where he teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in philanthropy and nonprofit administration. Professor Alaimo has published book chapters in The Jossey-Bass Reader on Nonprofit and Public Leadership, Volunteer Administration: Professional Practice, Leadership in Nonprofit Organizations: A Reference Handbook

The Power of Good Leadership | Guest Speaker: Darrin Gray

On this week's podcast, we had the pleasure of speaking with Darrin Gray. Darrin serves professional athletes, coaches & alumni, and business leaders who support the worldwide sports ministry with Godly Leadership. The platform of sports leadership training provides pathways into boardrooms, classrooms, and sports locker rooms worldwide.

He currently serves on the executive leadership team of Athletes in Action, Lions Lead, and Center for Serving Leadership at the Sagamore Institute ~ an action-oriented Think Tank.

As Darrin says, "My ministry moves at the speed of relationship. And so those relationships are what I believe, define who I am."

    Clint and Darrin will discuss:

    1. How he transitioned from a sports journalist to a sports minister and leadership teacher.
    2. How his relationship came about with Tony Dungy and what impact it had on his life.
    3. How do the NFL and other sport support their players with mentoring and character development as they enter their careers?
    4. Why anyone, athlete or layperson must find a great mentor, or how do they become one?
    5. Darrin also shares his favorite story of a pro athlete and how he has seen him grow and overcome challenges to become a solid, inspiring man.

Darrin's calling was in the ministry of availability. Being present for other men so that they can ultimately get a clearer vision of who they are, what their purpose is, and how they can accomplish their goals. As Darrin stated, "The relationships, the people you surround yourself with will more often than not, determine your outcomes in life, and you tend to reflect the communities you're connected to.

Top 3 Books Recommended by Darrin:

    1. Celebration of Discipline
    2. Catcher In The Rye
    3. The Bible

Be Ready When Opportunities Present Themselves with Kathy Durante

Be Ready When Opportunities Present Themselves with Kathy Durante

Welcome to episode 36 of the Today is the Day Changemakers Podcast. This week my guest is Kathy Durante, Executive Director, OceanFirst Foundation.

Kathy was raised in Poughkeepsie, NY and Hamilton, NJ before moving on to Ocean County.

Kathy's career started in the not-for-profit sector at what was then the Delaware Valley United Way.  With the nudge of someone she knew and trusted, Kathy decided to apply for the Executive Director position at the then, United Way of Ocean County, NJ.

She has since moved on from there and spent the last 18 years as the Executive Director of the OceanFirst Foundation where she is one of the organization's founding Directors. She comes to her work with the knowledge of being on both sides of the table.

She shares during the interview that mindsets need to change when it comes to the way not-for-profit work is thought of. She agrees that the important mission focused work should be referenced as 'for impact'. "Working in non-profit does not mean that you should be paid less or under resourced."

OceanFirst Foundation is the first foundation in the nation to be established by a bank as part of an initial public offering. Since its inception, the Foundation has invested more than $42 million in community initiatives and programs with more than 8,300 grants awarded to hundreds of nonprofits and schools throughout central and southern New Jersey.

Kathy manages the day-to-day operation and oversees all aspects of the proposal submission and review processes, chairing the Foundation’s Major Grant Committee which is charged with recommending grants to the Foundation’s Board for consideration.

Under Kathy's leadership, the Foundation launched new initiatives and partnerships focused on meeting the needs of the local community. Kathy has helped many start-up nonprofits and new and experienced grant seekers to fine tune their skills.

Some of Kathy's awards include: Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore’s Women of Distinction Award, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ocean County’s Humanitarian Award, and named Women’s Advocate of the Year by Ocean County’s Advisory Commission on the Status of Women. Under her leadership, OceanFirst Foundation has been the proud recipient of numerous community awards.

Kathy goes on to share about the importance of taking risks and being ready for opportunities as they start to present themselves.

    58: Facilitating Learning: A Bloomberg-Harvard Education

    58: Facilitating Learning: A Bloomberg-Harvard Education
The skills needed to be a mayor are many, and few have the time to pause and learn something new. The Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative was developed in response to the need for leadership and management training specifically tailored to city leaders. Bloomberg Philanthropies and Harvard University are uniquely qualified to develop such a program, combining resources to facilitate learning for city leaders currently holding office. Josh Skolnick of the Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Government Innovation team spoke to the program’s director and faculty co-chair for executive education, Jorrit de Jong. Jorrit is also a Senior Lecturer at Harvard’s Kennedy School; he and Josh discuss the program’s nearly 99% recommendation rate, the use of data, experimentation and innovation and cross-sector collaboration.
