The Police Unit That Was Supposed to Keep Memphis Safe

This episode contains descriptions of violence.

The death of Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man, at the hands of officers in Memphis last month has intensified calls for fundamental reform in policing. Those calls were echoed yesterday by President Biden, who hosted Mr. Nichols’s parents at the State of the Union address.

Today, we hear about a Times investigation into the special team of officers, known as the Scorpion unit, that is accused of killing Mr. Nichols.

Guest: Mike Baker, the Seattle bureau chief and a national correspondent for The New York Times.

Today on the Matt Walsh Show, five black police officers are under arrest after fatally beating a black man. Everyone involved is black, yet that hasn't stopped the media from pinning the blame on "white supremacy." Also, police departments across the country have been lowering their standards in order to attract new and "diverse" recruits. Does that play into the incident in Memphis? Plus, the Paul Pelosi 911 call is finally revealed, which also reveals the real story in that bizarre situation. A trans figure skater accidentally gives us the funniest video of the year so far. And the pop star Sam Smith tries to become the white male Lizzo. The results are as tedious as they are revolting.

A Push for Traffic Stop Reform

A Push for Traffic Stop Reform

A Times investigation last year found that minor traffic stops in the United States were far more deadly than widely thought — in the previous five years, 400 unarmed motorists who were not under pursuit for any violent crime were killed by the police during such checks.

We look at the different efforts across the country to rethink the stops and at the pushback from opponents who say that restrictions on the practice could keep more guns and criminals on the streets.

Guest: David D. Kirkpatrick, an investigative reporter for The New York Times.

Imagine a future with no police

Imagine a future with no police
Vox's Fabiola Cineas talks with author, lawyer, and organizer Derecka Purnell about her recent book Becoming Abolitionists. They discuss Derecka's journey to defending the idea of police abolition, and what that position really entails. They explore questions about the historical and social role of policing in society, how to imagine a future where we radically rethink our system of criminal justice, and how we can acknowledge and incorporate current data about crime—while still rethinking our inherited assumptions about police. 476. What Are the Police for, Anyway?

    476. What Are the Police for, Anyway?

The U.S. is an outlier when it comes to policing, as evidenced by more than 1,000 fatal shootings by police each year. But we’re an outlier in other ways too: a heavily-armed populace, a fragile mental-health system, and the fact that we spend so much time in our cars. Add in a history of racism and it’s no surprise that barely half of all Americans have a lot of confidence in the police. So what if we start to think about policing as … philanthropy?

    The Transformation of Ralph Northam

    The Transformation of Ralph Northam

In 2019, it seemed to many that Gov. Ralph Northam’s career was over.

That year, the Democratic governor of Virginia became embroiled in a highly publicized blackface scandal centered on a racist picture in his medical-school yearbook. There were widespread calls for his resignation.

Two years later, Mr. Northam has emerged as the most racially progressive leader in the state’s history. How did it happen?

Guest: Astead W. Herndon, a national political reporter for The New York Times.

    Background reading:

    • When a racist picture was discovered on his yearbook page, Ralph Northam refused to resign. Now he’s leaving office with a widely praised progressive record on racial justice.
    • Virginia’s governor survived a blackface scandal with the help of Black Democrats, who saw a chance for policy concessions. Both got more from the relationship than they could have imagined.

Ep. 714 - If BLM Is 'Afraid' Of The Police, They've Got A Funny Way Of Showing It

Today on the Matt Walsh Show, a woman called internal affairs to complain that an LA County Sheriff’s Deputy “harassed” her during a traffic stop. But body cam footage shows a completely different story. Also Five Headlines including outrage at Rick Santorum for claiming that Europeans built our civilization. But isn’t that simply an indisputable historical fact? And Caitlyn Jenner comes out against men playing in women’s sports, but does that mean we can trust him as conservatives? Plus, the Gates' are getting divorced. And in our Daily Cancellation, the Disney classic “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” is finally being called out for its promotion of rape culture. It’s about time.

Ep. 711 - Daddy Government Wants Your Child

Ep. 711 - Daddy Government Wants Your Child

Today on the Matt Walsh Show, President Biden delivered a long, rambling, and at times barely intelligible speech to congress last night, but if you could stay awake and decipher it, there was plenty to be concerned about. Especially the part where Biden unveils his plan for “universal preschool.” I’ll explain why that is a horrible, dystopian idea. Also Five Headlines including the parents who are volunteering their babies for COVID vaccine trials. What sort of parent would do that? And a track runner in Oregon collapses on the track after being forced to run with a mask. Plus, is the No Fly List being politically weaponized by the Biden Administration? Finally in our Daily Cancellation, we’ll discuss the outrage over comments Steve Harvey made claiming that men and women cannot be platonic friends. Is he wrong, or exactly 100 percent correct?

Jeremiah Ellison: The Artist-Activist On Forging Real Change

Jeremiah Ellison: The Artist-Activist On Forging Real Change
This month, events in Minneapolis captured the world’s attention. The recent death of Daunte Wright and the conviction of Derek Chauvin sound a significant shift in the civil rights movement and the country at large. Today, artist, activist, and politician Jeremiah Ellison is here to help us make sense of this historic moment. As some of you may know, I spent the week of April 13th, 2021 (pre-Chauvin verdict) in a very tense Minneapolis. Motivating my visit was an intention to better understand the events and circumstances that brought the world’s focus upon this city—not from what I read online or saw streaming endlessly on cable news—but rather from a first-hand, experience-based perspective. In addition, my objective was to conduct meaningful, nuanced conversations with Minneapolis civic leaders who are grappling with the important issues that have recently dominated national news coverage. Issues that include police misconduct and public safety reform; the roots of civil unrest and the purpose of protest; and of course the role social activism has played in all of this. This conversation, the first in a series of Minneapolis-themed episodes that I will be releasing over the coming weeks, is one powerful result of that good faith inquiry. Representing Ward 5 on the Minneapolis City Council, Jeremiah sits at the vortex of the many complicated issues that concern his community, and from the start has been one of the leading and most prominent voices calling for the reimagination of public safety. On the one hand, Jeremiah is a very unlikely elected official. An artist at heart and painter by trade, he’s both a muralist and a comic book illustrator. He’s into Silver Surfer. And Batman. On the other hand, he is the son of former 6-term Congressman Keith Ellison. Currently Attorney General for the state of Minnesota, the Ellison elder was also in charge of the Chauvin prosecution. In other words, it’s fair to say that Jeremiah was born for the role he currently inhabits. My week in Minneapolis was extraordinary. There were so many experiences I will never forget. I learned much. I’m better for the trip. And my time with Jeremiah has much to do with that. I’m grateful that he took the time to share his truth and for his trust in my ability to share it. FULL BLOG & SHOW NOTES: bit.ly/richroll597 YouTube: bit.ly/jeremiahellison597 This is a powerful exchange. My only ask is that you welcome Jeremiah and his testimony with an open mind and an open heart. P.S. – Special thanks to talented Minneapolis local photographers/videographers Bennie Wilson and Jordan Lundell for portraits & an upcoming video we are working on. Peace + Plants, Rich
