Humza Yousaf Resigns: The Opposition Reacts

Humza Yousaf Resigns: The Opposition Reacts

Humza Yousaf's resignation as First Minister of Scotland has sparked discussions about the future of the Scottish National Party (SNP) and the leadership contest that will follow. The conversation explores the personal and political reactions to Yousaf's resignation, the mistakes made during his tenure, and the need for change within the SNP. The potential candidates for the next First Minister, including John Swinney and Kate Forbes, are discussed, with an emphasis on the importance of unity and a focus on the people's priorities. The role of other parties, such as Labour and the Conservatives and the Greens, in the next chapter of Scottish politics is also examined.

We hear from Scottish Labour leader, Anas Sarwar; Scottish Lib Dem leader Alex Cole Hamilton, Scottish Conservative Chairman, Craig Hoy and Scottish Green MSP Gillian MacKay.

A listener writes in to ask, "Is there any risk of a Conservative - Reform coalition?"

    Labour and SNP Draw Level

    Labour and SNP Draw Level
New polling by Survation for True North (Geoff's Strategic Advisory firm) is out - how does it compare to what Humza Yousaf told us on last week's live podcast? We listen back to some of his answers and compare them to the polling which suggests the SNP and Labour are neck-and-neck on seat projections at the general election. Plus, we reveal the details of Geoff and Andy's election bets; and answer some of your questions. Also we look at Sir Tom Hunter's calls for changes on tax - does it feed into current political conversation in Scotland?

Interest rates have reached the highest level for 15 years but don’t worry because Rishi Sunak says he’s: “totally, 100% on it”. Is he? Or is that totally, 100% rubbish? The panel gives us their thoughts. And we get the latest mutiny news from Doomsday Watch’s Arthur Snell as tempers flare in Russia. Francis Fukuyama’s case against identity politics

Francis Fukuyama’s case against identity politics
Is all politics identity politics? And if so, then what does it mean to condemn identity politics in the first place? That’s the subject of my discussion with Stanford political scientist Francis Fukuyama. In his new book, Identity: The Demand for Dignity and the Politics of Resentment, he builds a theory of what identity means in modern societies and how spiraling demands for recognition are tearing at the fabric of our politics. "The retreat on both sides into ever narrower identities threatens the possibility of deliberation and collective action by the society as a whole," he writes. "Down this road lies, ultimately, state breakdown and failure.” Yikes. Fukuyama’s book revolves around a question I’ve become a bit obsessed by: When do we see political claims as identity politics, and when do we see them as just politics? What’s obscured in the passage from one boundary to another? Whose agendas are served by it? And in a country whose narrative of progress and perfection is inextricably bound up in the success of past moments of identity politics, how did this come to be such a vilified term today? So I asked Fukuyama on the show to discuss it. This is a great conversation with one of the foremost political thinkers of our age.
