    Nervous System 101

    Nervous System 101

In this episode, Lauren walks through the basics of our nervous system. Whether you have more sympathetic or parasympathetic nervous system activation, it is helpful to know how to recognize when your nervous system is dysregulated.

The goal is to stay within your Window of Tolerance and to get back into it as quickly as possible after becoming dysregulated. Lauren shares tips and ideas for preventing nervous system dysregulation and restoring regulation.

Lauren answers this week’s listener question during the episode: What do we do with students or children who have behaviors and we don't understand what's going on (and we don't either!) because they are too young?

    Try-at-home tip:  Read for pleasure!

Episode 292 - Aundi Kolber, "Embracing Strength and Vulnerability"

Welcome to another episode of Restoring the Soul with Michael John Cusick. Today, we dive into the depths of emotional and psychological healing with Aundi Kolber as we explore the intricate interplay between somatic experiences, Internal Family Systems, and the transformative power of embracing our emotions with grace and strength.

In this episode, we delve into Aundi's remarkable insights on somatic awareness, the body's intuitive sense of safety, and navigating challenging emotions with curiosity rather than criticism. Aundi shares how her bestselling book, "Try Softer," has influenced the lives of many and how her journey continues in her latest work, "Strong Like Water," an exploration of strength as a dynamic and adaptable force, much like the nature of water itself.

Join us as Aundi takes us through a compelling conversation about validating emotions, employing grounding techniques, and understanding trauma's impact on our perception of safety. Together, Michael and Aundi discuss how podcasts like ours serve as a beacon of connection and healing, how faith intertwines with psychological well-being, and the importance of integrating our whole selves for a compelling journey toward healing.

Glimmers - positive triggers to feeling peace and safety

Glimmers - positive triggers to feeling peace and safety
In this time of increasing challenges and uncertainty, we are all needing to do more to look after our feelings, mental health and wellbeing. Self regulation – or self management - is a critical part of this. 'Glimmers' is a term coined by social worker Deb Dana, whose work centres around polyvagal theory – or how our daily feelings result from the state of our nervous system. This new concept helps us to regulate our minds and feelings, to feel calm, reassured and safe. So tune in this episode as I discuss all things Glimmers - what they are and why it's important to recognise these positive triggers more than ever before, plus ways to notice and gain these positive experiences in your own life.

A Conversation About… Climate Change and Mental Health – Part 2

A Conversation About… Climate Change and Mental Health – Part 2

A ‘conspiracy of silence’ around climate change might be present in any conversation, even within mental health practice. In fact, this ‘elephant in the room’ may be bigger than you realise.

Tune in as our experts share their top techniques for supporting conversations about climate distress in sessions with clients. Drawing on theories such as Attachment Theory, Polyvagal Theory, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, they demonstrate how practitioners can better understand a client’s relationship with nature and how to respond if they express distress about climate change.

This is the second episode in a four-part podcast series featuring Developmental Psychologist, Ann Sanson, Clinical Supervisor and Psychotherapist, Merle Conyer and Environmental Psychologist, Susie Burke, as they explore and explain the nexus between climate change and mental health.

    Happy Satiated Saturday!

While the field of somatics is the study of the body, we cannot understand the body without its connection and integration with the mind.

The field of somatics has evolved from what we have discovered from neuroscience.

In this week’s episode, we explore some fascinating realms of neuroscience such as affective neuroscience, somatic markers, polyvagal theory, and much more and how they have informed and shaped somatic approaches.

Zuzka Light - How to Adjust Your Mind and Identity to Be Pain-Free

You have to change from the inside out to see the results that you desire.

Many years ago, I came across a type of workout that gave me really fast results in a short period of time.

It was in 2009 when I found Zuzka Light on YouTube (this platform was barely 4 years old and very few people even knew about HIIT.)

And although my own training and ways of movement changed a lot over time (I still do HIIT from time to time, though), I kept track of her as she also grew to become a published author, a movement and mobility specialist, RTT therapist, and I’m happy to be sharing her knowledge on this episode.

In our interview, we covered a lot, including her own personal story of how she finally got rid of chronic pain. After years of dealing with this condition, she was pain-free within a month when applying a different kind of approach to healing.

And as you’ll discover, we touched on everything from movement and motivation, to hypnosis, RTT, the power of the mind over the physical body, and the importance of imagination in adjusting your identity from believing you are someone living in pain, to enjoying your body again.

Regulating the Autonomic Nervous System - Emotional Eating Recovery

Uncover the psychological and physical issues behind comfort eating and learn how to start your journey to recovery with Stephen Porges' Polyvagal Theory, in the latest episode of Underground Confidence with Shelley Treacher.

In this episode, we look at ways to regulate the autonomic nervous system and how to start a journey of recovery from comfort eating. We discuss Stephen Porges’ polyvagal theory, provide a polyvagal exercise to kick in the parasympathetic response, and explore topics such as the difficulty of stopping eating, the psychological and physical issues behind it, the self-critic as the number one reason for comfort eating, and the inner child. We also talk about the physiology of triggering, the window of tolerance, and how to regulate the parasympathetic nervous system response.

(0:09:17) - Self Regulation and Comfort Eating Recovery

    Chapter Summaries
(0:00:02) - Regulating the Nervous System (9 Minutes)
This episode focuses on ways to regulate the autonomic nervous system, which is split into the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems. The sympathetic system is active when assessing threats, while the parasympathetic system is active when resting and digesting. Laughing, humming, singing, and dancing can all help to kick in the parasympathetic system and indicate that there is no danger. Stephen Porges's polyvagal theory is also discussed, and a polyvagal exercise is provided to help listeners get back into the parasympathetic response.

(0:09:17) - Self Regulation and Comfort Eating Recovery (6 Minutes)
Underground Confidence with Shelley Treacher' is discussing the topics of self-regulation, emotional eating, and how to start a journey of recovery from comfort eating. The episode provides an overview of the topics discussed throughout the year, such as the difficulty of stopping eating, the psychological and physical issues behind it, the self-critic as the number one reason for comfort eating, the inner child, and how to start having a good conversation with it. Additionally, the episode explains the physiology of triggering, the window of tolerance, and how to regulate the parasympathetic nervous system response.

Burnout is a state of physical, mental and emotional exhaustion that often occurs as a result of prolonged stress. It can interfere with your ability to perform physical activities, as well as impact your social and mental wellbeing. Fortunately, understanding the physiology of burnout is the first step in managing your stress and leading a healthier life.

The most common symptoms of burnout include tiredness, irritability, difficulty sleeping, difficulty concentrating, and a lack of motivation. It is believed that burnout is the result of a combination of excessive workload, lack of job control and low reward for performance, often compounded by shortages of resources, high pressure, challenging deadlines, and more. All of these can lead to physical, mental and emotional exhaustion.

At a physiological level, burnout is characterized by increased levels of cortisol and adrenaline. Cortisol is a stress hormone that is released when an individual experiences increased levels of stress. As cortisol levels rise, they can increase blood pressure, heart rate and glucose levels, as well as decrease serotonin production. Decreased levels of serotonin, which is an important neurotransmitter, can lead to feelings of sadness and/or apathy.

Fortunately, there are steps you can take to reduce your risk of burnout and its physical effects. The key lies in balancing stress levels with effective coping methods, such as regular exercise and healthy eating, getting enough sleep and relaxation, and seeking out social support. Additionally, you should make sure to take time off from the workplace, prioritize tasks, and manage your time wisely.

Though I am a physician, this is not medical advice. This is only a tool that physicians can use to get ideas on how to deal with burnout and/or know they are not alone. If you are in need of medical assistance talk to your physician.

Les Aria, PhD - Neuroplasticity and Training Your Brain for Pain Recovery

Les Aria, PhD - Neuroplasticity and Training Your Brain for Pain Recovery

It takes real mastery to develop effective and simple solutions to complex problems like chronic pain.

That’s why I enjoyed sitting down with Les Aria, PhD so much – he’s worked with over 50.000 patients through the course of his career, and the way he explains the pain process and recovery is at the same time incredibly deep, and so easy to understand, as well as implement.

In our age of growing opioid crisis, and conventional medicine that often still tries to fix human bodies like they were machines, the kind of mind-body interventions that Les teaches are absolutely necessary for moving us forward.

Les is a pain psychologist who specializes in treating psychophysiological disorders, persistent pain, functional neurological disorders, and medically unexplained problems.

In episode 7, we dive deep into mastering the skills to calm the nervous system down, how to create pain recovery habits, the 3 Ns of neuroplasticity, and how to train your brain into pain recovery in 90 seconds.

    Yin & Somatics: Stress Support

    Yin & Somatics: Stress Support

Chronic stress is linked to many of the most pernicious chronic diseases that plague modern humans. Managing stress is of critical importance for health, memory, learning and quality of life. We can't change the stressful times that we live in. But there are simple, evidence informed strategies that you can use to reduce your stress in the moment, and with practice, manage your responses to stressors in the long term. In this practice we actually explore three of these strategies.

I've also focused our movement on the areas in which most of us hold our stress; the shoulders, neck and adductors (inner thighs).

This practice is a go to in your stress management plan.
