    Enough

    Enough

If we get quiet with ourselves we can ask ourselves "Who Am I?"... God says some wonderful things about who we are. None of us are alone in wondering who we are and if we're enough!

In this episode, Melissa and Bishop Wright have a conversation about the notion of enoughness. They discuss the traps of striving for the elusive standard of being enough and the truth that only God is enough. Psalm 34 reveals the comfort of presenting our not-so-perfect selves to God, and that God is able to make us whole. Listen in for the full conversation.

Psalm 34 - The past is the past, keep looking forward

Psalm 34 - The past is the past, keep looking forward

I will extol the LORD at all times;  his praise will always be on my lips.
I will glory in the LORD; let the afflicted hear and rejoice.
Glorify the LORD with me; let us exalt his name together. Psalms 34:1-3

Charles Spurgeon describes this Psalm this way...
The title of this Psalm is, "A Psalm of David, when he changed his behavior before Abimelech (or, Achish); who drove him away, and he departed." It relates to a sad scene in David’s life when he had to feign madness in order to escape from his enemies. But I notice that although the fact is recorded, yet David does not dwell upon it in the Psalm. He had acted as a fool or a madman, but he was not fool enough, or mad enough, to glory in his shame! I have heard some men, whose past lives have been very disgraceful, who, after their professed conversion, have seemed to make a boast of their sin. David does not do that, nor will any other right-minded person. Let us always be ashamed of our sin, even while we magnify the Grace of God which has saved us from it. Though we may feel that it is necessary to mention it in order to encourage others to hope in the mercy of God, yet we must take care that we never even seem to dwell upon it with any kind of gusto.

Our past does not define our future with God. While we can't always forget it, we know we're a new creation because of Christ's sacrifice on the cross. AW Tozer has some very appropriate thoughts around this and we'll explore those today, too.

Taste and See - Psalm 34

Taste and See - Psalm 34

The book of Psalms is one of the most beloved books in the Bible. Believers throughout history have found wisdom, strength, and encouragement in the pages of this collection of the hymns of ancient Israel. As New Testament Christians, we can see the Lord Jesus Christ in the messianic psalms – those giving us a clear picture of Jesus.

Day 118: King Saul Despairs (2023)

Day 118: King Saul Despairs (2023)
Fr. Mike reflects on King Saul's despair in the face of trial, and how he seeks other means of comfort when he feels like God has abandoned him. God never abandons us, especially in the midst of danger. Fr. Mike invites us to place our trust in God's promise, instead of resorting to sinful acts. Today's readings are 1 Samuel 27-28 and Psalm 34. For the complete reading plan, visit ascensionpress.com/bibleinayear. Outward strength through internal compassion and unity

Outward strength through internal compassion and unity

1 Peter 3:8-9 - Finally, all of you should be of one mind. Sympathize with each other in brotherly love. Be compassionate, and keep a humble attitude.  Do not give back evil for evil or insult for insult but, on the contrary, give blessings, since you were called for this, so that you may inherit a blessing.

For us to be truly compassionate with others, we should be operating from a base of harmony with one another, and recognizing one another’s needs sympathetically. Once we are able to show brotherly love to each other through humility and compassionate actions, we can then have a united purpose with those outside the faith.

Peter's direction to maintain humility and compassion among each other could not come at a more needed time in the history of society. However, he was only building on the teaching of his master. Yeshua taught, "Blessed are the humble, for they will inherit the earth," (Matthew 5:5), and, "Take up my yoke and learn from me, because I am lowly and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls," (Matthew 11:29).

Peter says that the believers have been called by God to consistently swim upstream against the current of wickedness around them.  We must maintain righteous behavior, not to be congratulated for doing so, but because it is simply the right thing to do. And when we do so collectively as believers, we demonstrate a unity with one another that can be recognized by others. We create a firm foundation to then stand united in the face of opposition and evil. Not only that, but more than just standing firm against opposition, it is the believer's obligation to turn away from evil, to provide blessings in return for insults, and to seek and pursue peace with all others. We have no other alternative approved by God; we must always stand for peace and righteousness with one another and with all others.

    Devotions S4 | Heard with Kevin Kung'u

In Psalm 34 David chooses to extol and praise God while is on the run from Saul. At the point of this Psalm’s inception, David was literally acting insane in order to draw mercy from his enemies and escape death. Why would he praise God in the midst of what seemed like the epitome of God forsaking him or letting him down? It is because David felt heard by God. He had tasted of God and he knew that even though he was afflicted, God had heard his cries and that means, God was working out good.

SNS 062: How Do You Know God Is Good? Psalm 34, Psalm Tuesday

SNS 062: How Do You Know God Is Good? Psalm 34, Psalm Tuesday

In this episode, the Psalmist is praising God for his goodness. But how does he know God s good and worthy of praise? Well, the Psalmist states it rather plainly at a little less than halfway through the psalm. He says it’s all about perceiving this through actual experiences with God. Isn’t that rather profound? Perceiving through and understanding based upon actual experience. A beautiful way to build a relationship, don’t you think? And, well, let’s take a listen to this psalm, number 34, and then we can chat.

For now, my name is Charles, Charles Yerkes and this is Psalm Tuesday here on the Simple Not Shallow Podcast. This is a podcast for those who want a deeper faith and not an aggressively mediocre one. Psalm Tuesday is series in which, each Tuesday, we will listen to a Psalm being read in a manner that honors their original use as part of a worship service.
