    Psalm 66 - We will be tested

    Psalm 66 - We will be tested

    For you, God, tested us; you refined us like silver.  You brought us into prison and laid burdens on our backs. Psalms 66:10-11

    Psalm 66 is a Psalm of praise and at the same time, it's a reminder that we will be tested. Chrles Spurgeon reminds us in his sermon from 1863, that God tested the Patriarchs: Abraham, Issac and Joseph. He also points out that Jesus was tested, "God’s dear Son, the Captain of our salvation, was, Himself, tested and tested in all things, too! He was thrust into the hottest part of the glowing coals and tested as you and I have never been tested — tested to such an extent as our heart has not conceived! And among the professed followers of Jesus, all the sons of God are witnesses to this Truth, "You, O God, have tested us"

    Are you being tested today? Join me in reading Psalm 66 and be encouraged!

    We Recognize, We Remember, We Reach Out - Psalm 66 (Summer of Psalms)

    We Recognize, We Remember, We Reach Out - Psalm 66 (Summer of Psalms)

    Shout for joy to God, all the earth;
        sing the glory of His name;
         give to Him glorious praise!
    Say to God, “How awesome are Your deeds!
         So great is Your power that Your enemies come cringing to You. Psalm 66:1-3

    In Psalm 66, there are several themes we can isolate and pull out and apply to our daily lives in Christ.  Two of those themes are just recognizing Who He is and remembering what He has done.  A third theme is to take all that we know about Him and reach out to a lost and dying world around us.  These 3 R's:  recognizing, remembering, and reaching are the basis for this week's episode and help to shape our understanding of this very worshipful, praise-inspiring passage.

    Psalms | Lectio Divina of Psalm 66

    Psalms | Lectio Divina of Psalm 66

    Welcome to our journey through the Psalms.  Today's Meditation is a Lectio Divina (scripture meditation, see the very first podcast for an explanation of Lectio Divina) of Psalm 66.  This is a beautiful reflection of David's encounter with God's presence.

    In this moment, David is gratefully reminding himself that God's presence is available in the highs and lows, that God's love was present before he was even born, and that God cares about him dearly.

    Psalm 66

    Shout joyful praises to God, all the earth!
    Sing about the glory of his name!
        Tell the world how glorious he is.
    Say to God, “How awesome are your deeds!
        Your enemies cringe before your mighty power.
    Everything on earth will worship you;
        they will sing your praises,
        shouting your name in glorious songs.” Interlude
    Come and see what our God has done,
        what awesome miracles he performs for people
    He made a dry path through the Red Sea,
        and his people went across on foot.
        There we rejoiced in him
    For by his great power he rules forever.
        He watches every movement of the nations;
        let no rebel rise in defiance. Interlude

    Let the whole world bless our God
        and loudly sing his praises.
    Our lives are in his hands,
        and he keeps our feet from stumbling.
    You have tested us, O God;
        you have purified us like silver.
    You captured us in your net
        and laid the burden of slavery on our backs.
    Then you put a leader over us.
        We went through fire and flood,
        but you brought us to a place of great abundance.

    Now I come to your Temple with burnt offerings
        to fulfill the vows I made to you—
    yes, the sacred vows that I made
        when I was in deep trouble.
    That is why I am sacrificing burnt offerings to you—
        the best of my rams as a pleasing aroma,
        and a sacrifice of bulls and male goats. Interlude

    Come and listen, all you who fear God,
        and I will tell you what he did for me.
    For I cried out to him for help,
        praising him as I spoke.
    If I had not confessed the sin in my heart,
        the Lord would not have listened.
    But God did listen!
        He paid attention to my prayer.
    Praise God, who did not ignore my prayer
        or withdraw his unfailing love from me.

    Across four different words in two different languages, from the prophets to the Book of Revelation, the process of refining is important for God's people to have a baseline understanding of.  Together we RE:examine tough questions revolving around suffering and purification... while also learning how the Canadian govt refines gold.  Thank goodness for hydrochloric acid and titanium cathodes!  And thank God for the sacred purposes behind our faith-refining process.
