Embracing Morning Routines: Transformative Self-Care for Caregivers

Embracing Morning Routines: Transformative Self-Care for Caregivers

Six years ago, a moment of utter vulnerability amidst the chaos of caregiving led me to a breakthrough in self-care and managing stress. In this episode of the Caregiver Cup podcast, I invite you to journey with me as we explore the power of morning routines, not just as a list of tasks, but as a transformative practice for those of us dedicated to the care of our loved ones. Through my own experiences, I'll guide you in embracing those first critical moments of the day to establish habits that can ripple positive change throughout your life.

We'll unpack the concept of "habit stacking," where small wins in the morning can lead to impactful momentum, helping you navigate the daily challenges of caregiving with renewed energy and focus. I'll share the personal rituals that have seen me through seasons of busyness, normalcy, and extreme stress, providing insights into how carving out time for yourself can significantly uplift your well-being. By prioritizing self-care before the day's demands, we set the stage for a healthier, more balanced life as caregivers.

Finally, I'll walk you through the practical steps to build your morning routine, from gratitude journaling to 'Embracing the Suck,' and how to avoid common pitfalls like overcommitting or choosing stress-inducing activities. I encourage you to assess your day in "zones" and experiment with these small changes. Let's embark on this empowering change together, one morning at a time, as we aim to foster the strength needed to support both ourselves and those we care for.

Ep 15: Navigating Personal Goals and Health Challenges with Jodie Hall-Holit

Ep 15: Navigating Personal Goals and Health Challenges with Jodie Hall-Holit

Jodie Hall's story emphasizes the importance of putting oneself first and seeking support when facing health challenges. Her experience with congestive heart failure at a young age sheds light on the significance of early diagnosis and proper medical care.

At 19, Jodie discovered that she had congestive heart failure. Despite this diagnosis, she continued with her daily life, not fully understanding the seriousness of her condition. It wasn't until she was in her thirties that she noticed the symptoms and sought medical attention. This delay in recognizing the severity of her condition highlights the importance of early diagnosis and regular check-ups.

Jodie's journey also emphasizes the significance of seeking support from loved ones and medical professionals. When she was initially diagnosed, she faced the challenge of not being able to see her newborn son due to hospital regulations. However, her mother provided significant support during this time, ensuring that her son knew her identity and maintained a connection despite the physical separation

Throughout her journey, Jodie emphasizes the importance of putting oneself first and taking care of one's own well-being. She recognizes the significance of rest, stress management, and proper nutrition in managing her condition. By prioritizing her health and needs, she is better equipped to care for others and face the challenges that come her way.

In conclusion, Jodie Hall's experience with congestive heart failure at a young age highlights the importance of early diagnosis and proper medical support. Her journey showcases the resilience and determination of individuals facing health challenges. It serves as a reminder that it is possible to overcome adversity and live a fulfilling life with adequate support and mindset. By putting oneself first and seeking help from loved ones and medical professionals, individuals can navigate the challenges of a health diagnosis and find strength in their journey toward recovery.

How to Preview the Week Ahead - 5 Tips for Preparing Your Mindset to Succeed

How to Preview the Week Ahead - 5 Tips for Preparing Your Mindset to Succeed

    Show Notes:
I used to have this weird mindset where I didn’t want to think about the week ahead too much because I was afraid of jinxing it or manifesting something bad happening. But I had no idea what manifesting was, so it wasn’t thought about like that. But it was just so odd to fear looking at the week ahead. I think it was because I was enduring so much pain & trauma on the regular that I didn’t want to know what was coming.

And maybe you haven’t endured any pain or trauma that relates to fearing what is coming next or have to deal with anxiety, but if you find it difficult at all to prepare your mindset for the week ahead, I am here to share with you why it’s important & integral to your week & how you can do it in the most beneficial way.

Taking a little bit of time to preview the week ahead will help you make any decisions on what needs to change based on last week, what you want to do differently to have a different type of week and to make sure you feel prepared, mentally & physically, for what you need to accomplish and work on. We can only do what we have control over, which is ourselves, but we can still make a difference on our week with ourselves. Also, you need to prepare your mind for ways to pump yourself up when the days get tough and feel unbearable.

In the last episode, we chatted about the best way to review and reflect on the past week to gain more clarity and direction in what needs to improve and what HAS been improving but we didn’t notice in the moment. Check out that episode if you haven’t already listened to it. It will help you learn to review, which will couple well with today’s episode on how to preview and then you’ll be able to put those together for a great practice of self-awareness & mindset flexibility.

Today, we are going to chat about how to preview the week ahead to be as prepared as you can for what you know is going to happen. But it’s still all about being flexible in our mindset and knowing we can do our best to prepare for everything (which shouldn’t be the goal, really) but still have to deal with unexpected difficulties.  But as always, we can only control what we can control.

Here are 5 Ways to Preview the Week Ahead:

    1. Review Anything You Know Will be Difficult or Anxiety Inducing
    2. Prioritize What Needs the Most Attention
    3. List at Least 3 Things You Will Do to Practice Self-Care
    4. List 3 Ways to Stay Energized & 3 Ways to Stay Focused This Week
    5. Practice Self-Awareness By Knowing When You’re Taking On Too Much or Could Do More

    Toxic Teacher Environments

    Toxic Teacher Environments

Last week we chatted about how to handle it when you’re struggling with one specific coworker or team member.

Today, we’re going to go a little bit deeper and discuss what to do if the environment you’re in becomes too toxic. Maybe it’s too much negativity, or maybe your environment is swinging the other way to toxic positivity!

Cattiness, bullying, gossiping, and retaliation are the kinds of things I’m referring to in this episode.

In this episode of Real Teacher Talk, I’m sharing five tips for how to handle it when you’re in the thick of it, and some advice for how to move forward.  As difficult as it can seem, when you’re in a toxic working environment, you’re in the perfect position to really think about what you want your next steps to be.

How To Manage Your Time As A Caregiver

How To Manage Your Time As A Caregiver

Have you said:  I have no time.  I can't manage it all.  My to-do list is never ending.  How do I get this all done?

In this episode, I'm breaking it all done:  What is time management?  Why don’t caregivers have enough time?  What the root cause is?  And most importantly, how do you management your time?

Time management is making the most of the time you have.  You have 24 hours in the day.  These are the times you have to work your job or business, this is the time you have to take care of my loved one’s care whether that be doctor's appointments, nursing needs and finances.  You also have to get in cleaning the house, laundry, grocery shopping and more.   How can you get these done effectively?  How do you utilize that time?  That’s what time management is in your busy caregiver life.

Time management and feeling behind is actually a symptom or a sign of the condition.   symptom, it will keep coming back.  Treating the symptom is a great option for now and can help us get through a hard season but it’s not a long term solution. The long term solution happens over time and takes work, effort and sometimes is frustrating because all we want is it to be fixed now.

But when you really look at the root cause of your stress, it’s not really a time management issue - is it?    You have to start with a core foundation of making your care a priority.   When you put yourself first and love yourself you can be more productive, a better caregiver and find more joy.

When you focus on you it’s going to give you more energy.  It’s like a well oiled machine, like a car.  When you take care of yourself, everything will go smoother, faster and easier.

    Steps to managing your time:

    1. Who do you really want to be?  How do you want to show up as a caregiver?
    2. Start managing your calendar and put yourself down as a priority.
    3. Find efficiencies
    4. Ask for help
    5. Find your focus

I would encourage you to set a goal each month.  Then lay out a plan for each week.

How a caregiver is similar to being an olympic athlete

How a caregiver is similar to being an olympic athlete

This past week brought lots of news from the girls gymnastics team with Simone Biles pulling herself out of the group and individual round competition due to mental illness.

This news story got me thinking about how this story relates to being a caregiver.  NY Times Article - Published July 27, 2021Updated July 30, 2021, 7:50 p.m. ET

When she twisted fewer times than she had planned in the vault, she knew she was not herself, having lost her usually uncanny sense of where her body is in the air and failing to complete the kind of daring skill she is known for.

Biles, the most decorated gymnast in the world, walked off the mat and left the competition, saying she was not mentally prepared to continue.

“At the end of the day, we’re human, too, so we have to protect our mind and our body rather than just go out there and do what the world wants us to do,” she said. “With the year that it’s been, I’m really not surprised how it played out.”

Think about how much practice and dedication it takes for gymnastics competition.    As caregivers, we dedicate our time and energy by managing the household, finances, working our job or business plus doing all the caregiving tasks.

Athletes  practice multiple times a day plus practice proper nutrition and sleep.

What about you?   If you go back to episode 42 and  episode 28, I share my morning routines and the benefits of having a morning mindset.   Getting up early isn’t easy but it pays huge dividends when it comes to your health.   You can’t be at your best if you don’t pay attention to your nutrition, hydration, sleep and exercising your mind and body.

I think about what these athletes have to  give up.

Instead of focusing on what you give up.  Think about it as delaying your time.  Simone’s Mom told her your dreams are just delayed when she didn’t make the USA team to go to the London Olympics.  You can still have the dream.  You may have to slow down, but it can still happen.

As much controversy and negative feedback Simone is getting, I personally am glad that mental illness is being talked about.

When’s the last time you told yourself

    • I just can’t focus
    • I just can’t function today
    • I am in a fog
    • I just can’t work today or I can’t caregive today

These are all signs of caregiver burnout or compassion fatigue.     Get this free resource:  caregiver stress.

It's important to take a break.    If you're in the hospice stage, it may be a nap, a walk or a drive for an hour.  If your loved one is dealing with a chronic illness, it’s a long haul and you NEED to take respite care for yourself.  In Episode 40 is more details of respite care.

Ask for help.  It’s important to do what Simone did and say no, I can’t do it.  Your health and mental well-being are the most important.

My action step for you is to reflect on your health and well-being.    On a scale of 1-10.
