A Recruiting Kickoff Process for a High-Performing Top of Funnel with Natan Fisher, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of SingleSprout

A Recruiting Kickoff Process for a High-Performing Top of Funnel with Natan Fisher, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of SingleSprout

In this episode of Offer Accepted, Natan Fisher, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of SingleSprout, shares his unique perspective on the hiring process, emphasizing the importance of understanding what a job is not and what failure looks like in a role. He believes that mismanaged expectations often lead to employee turnover, and that success should be clearly defined in terms of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and goals.

Natan highlights the importance of identifying non-negotiable must-haves for a role. These can range from compensation and skills to culture fit and location. He advises hiring managers to limit their non-negotiables to four key points, with the rest being nice-to-haves. This approach, Natan argues, helps to create a clear and realistic picture of the job.

Natan's hot take on recruiting is that understanding customers and their needs should be directly connected to the recruiting process. He encourages companies to align their hiring process with their business process, ensuring that the people they hire can effectively meet their customers' needs. Natan's insights offer a fresh perspective on the hiring process, emphasizing the importance of clear communication, realistic expectations, and customer-focused recruiting.

What to Expect on the Visit

    1. Meeting with the Coaching Staff: This is typically the first stop. It's an informal introduction where the coaching staff will talk about their program's vision and where they see your son fitting in.

    2. Campus Tour: This isn't just about baseball. Your son is potentially choosing a home for the next few years. The tour will cover classrooms (where he'll spend a good chunk of his time), the cafeteria (essential for those growing athletes), and the dorms.

    3. Baseball Facilities: Expect a comprehensive tour of the baseball-specific facilities. This includes the locker room (a player's second home), the state-of-the-art weight room, and of course, the field where all the magic happens.

    Should Parents Come Along?

Absolutely. Your perspective as a parent is invaluable. You'll have questions and observations that might not occur to a young athlete.

    Dress Code for the Athlete

While there's no strict dress code, being presentable is key. A clean polo shirt or button-up with slacks or khakis and closed shoes is a good choice. It's a balance between casual and making a good first impression.

Questions Your Athlete Should Consider Asking

    1. Academic Support: "How does the team support academic endeavors? Are there tutoring programs available for athletes?"
    2. Team Dynamics: "What's the team culture like? How do you handle conflicts or challenges within the team?"
    3. Training and Recovery: "What's the off-season training program like? How does the team handle injury prevention and recovery?"
    4. Future Opportunities: "How do you support players looking to play at the professional level or seeking opportunities post-college?"

Remember, this visit is as much about the college choosing your son as it is about him choosing the college. It's a two-way street.

As always, I'm here to support you through every step of this exciting journey. Feel free to reach out if you have further questions or need more guidance.

In today's episose, we are going to focus on a crucial aspect of the recruitment process: what do college coaches look for in a high school hitter? Here are the 5 things:

    1. Hit-ability: Coaches love a player who can consistently get the ball in play. They are looking for players who have the hand-eye coordination to make regular contact with the ball and the ability to adjust to different pitch types and locations.

    2. On-Base Ability: The importance of this cannot be overstated. The more often a player can get on base, the more opportunities their team has to score. Coaches appreciate players who demonstrate patience at the plate, the ability to work counts in their favor, and the knack for finding ways to get on base.

    3. Plate Discipline: This is all about a player's judgment at the plate. Coaches look for players who know the strike zone well and are disciplined enough to avoid chasing poor pitches.

    4. Swing: The swing itself is vital. Coaches look for players with a technically sound, quick, and compact swing that can produce consistent line drives.

    5. Game Power: Coaches are always in search of players who can change the game with one swing of the bat. A player's power can be a huge asset in the recruitment process, especially if they can combine it with the other elements listed above.

Players can generally be classified into three categories based on the level of interest they receive from coaches: cold interest, warm interest, and hot interest.

In today’s episode, I would like to outline some strategies to help you transition through these stages and ultimately secure a spot on the best college fit for you.

    1) Cold Interest:

    * At this stage, players have not yet caught the attention of college coaches. Two reasons for this are 1) They are winging it and hope to be found at travel tournaments. 2) They are not targeting schools that are a good fit athletically and may not be recruiting for their position. It is essential to take proactive measures to put them on the radar of college coaches.  a. Find schools that are a good fit for you athletically and academically. b. Reach out to coaches directly: Players should express their interest in the program and provide a brief overview of their skills and accomplishments.

    2) Warm Interest

    * At this level, players have generated some interest from college coaches, but they need to continue developing their skills and marketing themselves effectively. a. Enhance communication: Ensure that players maintain regular contact with coaches, providing updates on their progress, academic standing, and any new achievements. b. Ask questions: Players should ask questions about what they are looking for in their position and if they could be a possible good fit.c. Develop strong relationships with coaches: Players should work closely with their coaches familiar with college baseball, who can serve as valuable resources and advocates in the recruiting process.

    3) Hot Interest:

    * Players in this category have garnered significant attention from college coaches with personal phone calls, texts, Facetimes, and campus visits. It is crucial to help them navigate this stage effectively and make informed decisions. a. Leverage other interests: If other schools are interested in the player, leverage that with other schools  b. Conduct campus visits: If the player hasn't been invited yet for a campus visit go visit campus personally and let coaches know when you will be there.  c. Maintain high performance: Players should continue to excel both on and off the field, demonstrating their dedication and work ethic to prospective coaches.

By implementing the strategies discussed in today's episode, you can attract and maintain the interest of college coaches, increasing your chances of securing a spot on a college baseball team.

I look forward to discussing these ideas.

5 Common Mistakes In College Recruiting

5 Common Mistakes In College Recruiting

As a former college baseball coach and recruiter, I have seen many talented players get overlooked in the recruiting process because of common mistakes.

But don't worry; I'm here to help!

Here are the top five mistakes to avoid in the recruiting process.

    1. Sitting back & hoping to be found (not having a plan) - Don't wait for coaches to find you. Take control of your recruiting process by recruiting coaches and having a plan.
    2. Starting too late - Don't wait to start the recruiting process. College coaches start recruiting early (as early as freshman year in some cases), so make sure you're on their radar.
    3. Depending on your travel team - While there are some good travel teams out there. They are becoming fewer and fewer, unfortunately. Going to a random tournament hoping to be seen when there aren't many college scouts (or any) doesn't work well.
    4. Targeting the wrong schools - Make sure you target schools that are a good fit for you academically, athletically, and geographically. Don't waste your time on schools that aren't a good match.
    5. Getting a "no" from a school and quitting - Don't give up if a school says no. Keep working hard and connecting with coaches. You never know when another opportunity might arise.

Avoiding these five common mistakes can help you stand out in the recruiting process and increase your chances of playing college baseball.
