3.14 - When Bacon is Bad

3.14 - When Bacon is Bad

The guys wrap up the walk-through of the history of biblical interpretation in this episode.  It is beneficial to understand where the church has been throughout the centuries in relation to doctrine and what was considered "orthodox".  This is an important step in understanding why some Christians face a crisis of faith when their "foundations" are shaken.

3.13 - Biblical Interpretation - Too literal, or just right?

3.13 - Biblical Interpretation - Too literal, or just right?

This week the guys continue to engage the "anti"-testimonies of Rhett and Link and the issues that led them away from faith.  This episode is unique as they spend little time walking through Scripture and instead embark on a walk through the history of biblical interpretation.  How did we get to the traditional, literal interpretations of Scripture that are considered orthodox today?

3.12 - The Importance of Adam

3.12 - The Importance of Adam

This week's episode continues the interaction with Rhett and Link's publicly shared "anti"-testimonies.  Here the guys discuss the importance of Adam and how his story functions in God's big picture redemption story.  Is he central to the redemption story or not?

3.10 Rhett, Link, and Young Earth Creationism

3.10 Rhett, Link, and Young Earth Creationism

This week finds the guys interacting with the shared testimonies of YouTube comedians and fellow podcast hosts Rhett & Link.  In their podcast, Ear Biscuits, Rhett & Link discuss the challenging questions that ultimately pushed them away from the Bible and away from their faith.  Listen in as the After Class guys respectfully offer some answers to the challenge of how to understand creation accounts and biblical genealogies.

Episode 126: Not the "Zombieland" Review You Were Expecting

Episode 126: Not the "Zombieland" Review You Were Expecting

Ever since the original "Zombieland" debuted in theaters way back in 2009, fans of the film clamored for a sequel.  Finally, thier patience was rewarded this fall with "Zombieland 2: Double Tap".

But what a lot of folks forget is that long awaited film is not the only sequel the franchise has spawned.  In 2013, Amazon Prime had an experiment in which they presented their audience a batch of pilots, leaving the viewers to decide which one would be picked up for series.  And sure enough, one of those shows up for selection was a television spin-off of "Zombieland".

Listen in as Jake and Tom go over that pilot, discussing why they they think it failed, as well as what they wish they could have seen more of.

And as always, be sure to help Jake and Tom in their quest for world domination by rating them highly on Apple Podcasts, spreading the word for them on social media, following them over on Twitter, joining in on the conversation over on their Facebook page, "Jake and Tom Conquer the Group", checking out Tom's sorta side-project, "Someone's Favorite Movie Podcast" (hosted by friend of the show Randy Perkins), and by supporting all of the other great podcasts brought to you by their partners in internet radio, Geeks Worldwide!

    Rhett Butler | Mongabay

Rhett Butler is the founder and CEO of Mongabay, one of the largest, longest running and most important environmental news sites online.

Rhett started the site just 20 years ago when an area of rainforest he had visited and enjoyed in Borneo was cut down just eight weeks later, logged down for woodchips to supply a paper pulp plant.

He spent the first ten years of the project operating Mongabay entirely on his own, publishing thousands of stories and tens of thousands of photos. Today, Rhett serves as editor-in-chief and CEO of Mongabay, which is a non-profit media organisation with more than three dozen staff across four bureaus and a network of around 250 correspondents in 50 countries.

In today’s podcast we talk about his journey setting up and growing Mongabay and where he plans to take things next. We also talk about the importance of journalism in environmental conservation, alongside practical tips on how to craft a compelling story. If you’re interested in news, media, journalism and communications, it’s a must-listen episode. Enjoy.

    I just fell asleep!

    I just fell asleep!

The New York Football Giants won a game! Rejoicing is in order. Zach and Willys discuss the adjustments made to get Big Blue's offense moving, the offensive line passable, and Eli back on track. They also revel in the suddenly excellent play of Kerry Wynn, the sustained excellence of Odell Beckham, and the defense's competitiveness through three games.

As usual, they take a look around the league, focusing on the increasingly controversial roughing the passer penalties against Clay Matthews and Green Bay.

The episode wraps up with a preview of Week 4's game back home against the New Orleans Saints, and the classic signoff we know you expect.

RHETT WALKER: Artist, Songwriter, Preacher's Kid, and Family Man

RHETT WALKER: Artist, Songwriter, Preacher's Kid, and Family Man

“My biggest thing, since I was a kid, has been authenticity. I think you can write a song that means something to just you, and that, most of the time, will end up relating to most people. They might not have lived that story, but they can relate it to something in their own life. ”

In this episode, John sits down with Grammy-nominated artist, Rhett Walker. Rhett is a down-to-earth family man, who grew up as a preacher’s kid in South Carolina. While he was raised in church, Rhett shares about his personal journey of recognizing the need to find Jesus for himself. As a worship leader, songwriter, and touring artist, Rhett has a well-rounded experience in music.

“So many times with music… we spend a lot of time adding things, and not sharing the space that a song actually needs… It’s important to be authentic in how we play the songs.”

Rhett formed the Rhett Walker Band in 2011, after moving to Nashville to pursue his passion for music. In 2012 his song, “When Mercy Found Me,” was nominated for Best Contemporary Christian Music Song. Throughout this episode, Rhett gives practical and profound advice in regards to songwriting and musicianship. The underlying message is authenticity, being true to who you are, and letting that resonate in the music that you create.

“Don’t just try to write pretty words… Don’t say something cliche just because it sounds cool… It might be just one song out of a hundred that has success, but that one out of a hundred will be the most ‘you’ song, that only you could write.”

Is Deadpool the Key to Rebooting the X-Men Franchise?

Is Deadpool the Key to Rebooting the X-Men Franchise?

In Episode 78 of the Crooked Table Podcast, Robert Yaniz Jr. takes a long, hard look at Deadpool 2 and whether the Merc with the Mouth actually serves as the perfect opportunity for Fox, Marvel or both (depending on how Disney's acquisition of Fox turns out) to finally launch into the long-rumored top-to-bottom reboot of the convoluted and splintered X-Men film franchise.

After all, Ryan Reynolds' anti-hero is already the biggest audience draw within the X-verse. So it stands to reason that he would serve as the launchpad for new interpretations on other mutant mainstays of Marvel Comics.

Scoop up those chimichangas, and let's take a closer look, shall we?

Deadpool 2 synopsis courtesy of Fox (yes, seriously):

After surviving a near fatal bovine attack, a disfigured cafeteria chef (Wade Wilson) struggles to fulfill his dream of becoming Miami's hottest bartender, while also learning to cope with his lost sense of taste. Searching to regain his spice for life, as well as a flux capacitor, Wade must battle ninjas, the yakuza, and a pack of sexually aggressive canines, as he journeys around the world to discover the importance of family, friendship, and flavor - finding a new taste for adventure and earning the coveted coffee mug title of World's Best Lover.
