Day 328: Stephen Is Martyred (2023)

Day 328: Stephen Is Martyred (2023)
Fr. Mike reflects on Stephen's heroic martyrdom and points out how those around him refused to hear him and hardened their hearts, something we too can do with the Word of God. In the book of Romans, Fr. Mike also highlights the importance of offering our bodies as a living sacrifice, responding to the call to love and to not be conformed to this world, and remembering that Christians have been grafted onto the tree of Israel. Today we read Acts 7, Romans 11-12, and Proverbs 27:13-14. For the complete reading plan, visit ascensionpress.com/bibleinayear. Bible Study: Romans 11:25-36

    Bible Study: Romans 11:25-36

In this episode of our podcast, we conclude our study of Romans 11 by exploring verses 25-36 and its message and theme.

In the previous episodes, we have seen Paul present various "witnesses" to demonstrate that God's plan for Israel is not yet finished, even though they have rejected Jesus. These witnesses have included Paul himself, the prophet Elijah, the Gentiles, and the Patriarchs.

In this episode, we will focus on the final witness, God Himself, and how all the evidence presented by Paul points to a future for Israel in God's plan. Join me as we gain insight into the biblical concept of Israel's "fullness" and how it will bring about the riches of God's grace as never before.

    Romans 11 - God's ways, not ours

    Romans 11 - God's ways, not ours

For from him and through him and for him are all things.  To him be the glory forever! Amen. Romans 11:36

Charles Spurgeon describes this last verse of Romans 11 during his sermon in May of 1864 this way:
"My text consists almost entirely of monosyllables, but it contains the loftiest of sublimities. Such a tremendous weight of meaning is concentrated here that an archangel’s eloquence would fail to convey its teaching in all its glory to any finite minds, even if seraphs were his hearers. I will affirm that there is no man living who can preach from my text a sermon worthy of it.
Our great God alone can expound this verse for He only knows Himself and He only can worthily set forth His own perfections. Yet I am comforted by this reflection that maybe, in answer to our prayers, God Himself may preach from this text this morning in our hearts. If not through the words of the speaker, yet by that still small voice to which the Believer’s ear is so well accustomed. If thus He shall condescend to favor us, our hearts shall be lifted up in His ways.
As Spurgeon says as only he can do, God still talks to us, but we have to be prepared to hear it and be familiar enough with Him to know it's His voice. Join me in reading Romans 11 and be encouraged!

    Bible Study: Romans 11:12-24

In this episode of our podcast, we continue our exploration of Romans 11 by studying verses 12-24. In this chapter, Paul cites five additional examples or "witnesses" to show that there is still a future for the Jews in God's plan. This section is a continuation of the previous episode, in which we focus on the role of Gentiles and the Patriarchs in this plan and how Paul uses them as evidence of God's ongoing purpose for Israel.

Being Protected From Your Bible - Romans 11:28-36

Being Protected From Your Bible - Romans 11:28-36

If I were a betting man, I would say that most of us have been sheltered from our Bible.  What does it mean to be sheltered/protected from our Bible and why is it happening?  Paul tells the Roman people that the non-believing Jews were "enemies" to the Gospel, mostly for their condemnation and suppression of Christians and the story of Jesus Christ.  What happens when the people who are suppressing the Bible are the very people who claim to believe it?

Taking It For Granted - Romans 11:23-27

Taking It For Granted - Romans 11:23-27

Is the grass really greener on the other side?  Or have we been fooled into thinking that life without God is good?  As we survey Paul's letter to Rome we can see that Israel took for granted the promise and status they were given as God's covenant partners.  We can fall prey to this same complacency if we are not careful.

The Fear of God - Romans 11:18-22

Today we explore what it means to fear God.  Depending on who you ask, the "fear of God" means different things.  Paul warns the gentiles in Rome to not be arrogant of their new-found status in Christ, but rather to "fear".  How should we view the "fear of God"?  Lets find out!

Finding the Tree of Life - Romans 11:16-18

Finding the Tree of Life - Romans 11:16-18

We've done it. We have found the Tree of Life! If this claim sounds odd to you, I promise after this episode you will agree with me.  Paul gets into some beautiful imagery regarding grafting and the branches that are brought in and tossed out.  We are those branches and the fruit we bear is essential to our status in this imagery.  Speaking of Trees, do we as the branches have a right to look down on the root (foundation) that we feed off of?  Modern culture tends to view itself as morally superior to the generations past, but is that really the case?  Do we have a right to belittle those who made the foundation we take for granted?

Reading The Bible Correctly, and Rejecting Israel - Romans 11:1-10

Reading The Bible Correctly, and Rejecting Israel - Romans 11:1-10

Was the bible handed down from heaven by God, or did man have a hand in its creation?  How did the ancient Israelites read their scripture and how should we read it today?  These are questions that are often overlooked in our typical church gathering, but they are all too important in our ability to correctly read the Bible.  Paul utilizes important strategies when reading/quoting scripture in his letters and the letter to the Romans is no exception.  Paul touches on an important topic namely, Rejecting Israel.  Let's discover what gems Paul has left for us in Romans 11.
