Copshop & Mr Bean: The Animated Series

Copshop & Mr Bean: The Animated Series

Welcome back to another flavourful episode of Bad Dads Film Review! Pull up a chair, fellow Dad cinephiles, as we pour over the dynamic world of servers and explore action-packed precincts, all the while indulging in some animated nostalgia.

Top 5: Waiters/Waitresses in Film & TV: Serving isn't just a job, it's an art form. We start off by paying homage to the most iconic waiters and waitresses to grace our screens. From the sassy Diane Chambers of "Cheers" to the endearingly clumsy Amelia Bedelia, we'll rank, debate, and toast to the ones who've added the perfect touch of spice to their roles. We might also toss in a few memorable, albeit cringe-worthy, serving faux pas that had us rolling with laughter or hiding behind our popcorn.

Movie of the Week: Copshop: Directed by Joe Carnahan and starring Gerard Butler and Frank Grillo, "Copshop" is a gripping dive into the world of crime and betrayal, with a precinct holding cell as its battleground. We'll unravel the film's intense action sequences, its intriguing character dynamics, and whether it passes the Dad test of providing a perfect blend of thrills, plot depth, and popcorn-munching moments.

Kids TV - Mr Bean: The Animated Series: Ah, Mr. Bean. Few characters have the universal, timeless appeal of this bumbling Brit. As we delve into the animated adventures of Rowan Atkinson's iconic character, we'll discuss how Mr. Bean continues to captivate new generations without uttering a single word. We Dads will reminisce about our favourite Bean moments and chat about the life lessons – intended or otherwise – our kids might glean from his antics.

So whether you're in for the cinematic service, crime capers, or cartoon chuckles, we've got your table set.  Bon appétit!

We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. If it hasn't been completely destroyed yet you can usually find us on twitter @dads_film, on Facebook Bad Dads Film Review, on email at baddadsjsy@gmail.com or on our website baddadsfilm.com.

From WJPZ to Broken Arrow, Face Off, and Veep, with Chris Godsick, '87

From WJPZ to Broken Arrow, Face Off, and Veep, with Chris Godsick, '87

Chances are, Chris Godsick has been chewed out by more Hollywood A-listers than you've met in your lifetime.  But we'll get to that.

As a member of the Class of 1987, Chris was a sophomore when WJPZ moved to the FM dial.  He really captures the enthusiasm and excitement of that moment.  The radio station's passionate staffers could now be heard in the market, and soon they were pulling ratings away from 93Q, "The Bagel Station."

During this episode, we also remember the late Larry Barron, and what an influence he had on the radio station at that time.  Chris tells us about the year that WJPZ was able to secure the exclusive announcement of when to buy SU Basketball tickets, and the entire campus was listening, waiting for Larry to make the announcement.   Then, if you know Chris, he follows that story with one that Larry would probably rather forget, may he rest in peace.

Following his time at Syracuse, Godsick went out to LA, where he started in the mailroom at William Morris, working his way up to messenger, dealing with everyone from Bea Arthur to Richard Simmons. Eventually he was at one of the premiere desks for the co-head of the motion picture department. He was yelled at by Si Maslow (Tom Hanks' agent), Sir Sean Connery, and Mel Brooks.  But let's be honest, who among us wouldn't want to be roasted by Mel?

When he became an agent, Chris went after some untapped markets.  He found Rowan Atkinson (aka Mr. Bean) in the UK, and eventually formed a company with a man he met in Asia.    That would be director John Wu.  He and Chris did Face Off and Broken Arrow together, along with (Chris's words) "some really horrible" stuff.  We press him on that.

Throughout his career, Godsick spent time behind the scenes with the US Military and other organizations, and it was an invitation to shadow the US Marshals that spawned the idea for his latest project, a true crime podcast called Chasing Evil, which we highly recommend.

We wrap up talking about Chris's time working on HBO's Veep.  He tells us about Julia Louis-Dreyfus nailing her audition, and we hear about Chris's invitation to then-Vice President Biden's home that the writers were able to turn into this scene in the show.    Oh yeah, and he won some Emmys too.

YNFA 037: Love Actually, or Do They Know It’s Curtis?

YNFA 037: Love Actually, or Do They Know It’s Curtis?

Lock up your daughters (especially if Colin Firth is moping around with some loose papers), and keep an eye on that randy PM, as we immerse ourselves in the Christmas overindulgence that is Richard Curtis’s Love Actually. Can we please stop calling totally normally proportioned Martine McCutcheon chubby? Did Mark, aka the Cue Card Guy, deserve the hate he got for his visual proclamation? And are the porn couple the only healthy relationship in this whole film? Or is it Bill Nighy’s aging rockstar and his manager? We’re too busy tearing up over the actual people welcoming each other home at Heathrow to come up with any answers.

    The Witches (1990)

Based on a children's book by Roald Dahl, with puppet master Jim Henson as Exectutive Producer, and star Anjelica Huston how could anything go wrong!? Jason Furie and Adam Roth dive into The Witches (1990) and see how this 90s classic stands the test of time. We didn't bother with the Disney+ 2020 remake. It looks kinda like hot garbage. Happy Spooky Season everyone!

    Moonfall & Man Vs Bee

    Moonfall & Man Vs Bee

A frequent highlight of putting the podcast together is reading Reegs' episode notes. He really does have a gift fir that kind of thing. Anyhow, he's off on holiday for a few days a left the notes to me. I can only apologise.

The topic for discussion for our top 5 is INSECTS. Reegs has a particular dislike of wasps, but I think we can all agree that the real idiots of the insect world are mosquitoes. Sadly none of those feature in the segment, but we do find room for spiders, praying mantis and the occasional cockroach.

Sidey (me) has already declared his love for MOONFALL. This is an example of real filmmaking joy. Have a stupid/outrageous idea. Then double down on it. No one wants a half baked disaster movie, you have to go all in. MOONFALL is absolutely guilty of doing just that and I for one and glad. You could say that the movie is stupid, poorly acted and a boring soulless CGI fest. You'd be wrong.

We round things off by looking at MAN VS BEE. It's like JAWS with without the need for a bigger boat. And it's not as funny as Jaws either.

Episode 319: "Scooby-Doo" The Right Thing

Episode 319: "Scooby-Doo" The Right Thing

The masterpiece that solidified Matthew Lillard as a national treasure. "Scooby-Doo" is a fun and mostly stupid visit to the world of the Scooby Gang set in the early 2000s. The cast is actually pretty ridiculous. Did they all nail it? No. But the effort is appreciated. We pair it with Ridgeback from Lion Hound. It's a red blend of shiraz, merlot, Grenache, cab sauv, and mourvedre. It was definitely red.

    Metacritic Score: 35/100

Movie Sync Notes: We rented "Scooby-Doo" on Amazon Video. We start "Scooby-Doo" 9:15 into the pod and push play on part two 1:04:49 into the pod.
