Ultra-Distance Running on Low-Carb with Dr. Mark Cucuzzella 025

We had such a fun chat with Dr. Mark Cucuzzella! Dr. Cucuzella is a family medicine doctor working in West Virginia. He discovered the low-carb diet in 2012, and has been using it successfully in his practice since. His amazing and free PDF program teaches people how to successfully execute the ketogenic diet on any budget. He has also used the diet to help himself and others in applying the diet to endurance sports! Dr. Cucuzzella has run over 100 (wow!) marathons and ultra-marathons in his career, including this 100 mile race earlier this year! As a Lt. Col. in the US Air Force, he writes the USAF Efficient Running Program. He is also the author of the book "Run For Your Life", which he wrote in 2018. He owns the running store Two Rivers Treads, which focuses on minimalist shoes. We could go on and on. He was an amazing guest, we are so grateful for all the work he does and shares freely, and we had a blast!

“In life, you have to start your own adventure. You have to be the instigator of your own story.”—Toby Tanser

So many times, we focus on the results of a success story. And we miss the “small” but monumental life lessons in the day-to-day experiences.

In this episode, Jon and Bryan are captivated by the unexpected exploits of Toby Tanser. He shares multiple accounts of “seemingly insignificant” crossroads he faced. And you’ll learn the unbelievable series of events that eventually led to Shoe4Africa and the realization of Shoe4Africa Children’s Hospital in Eldoret, Kenya.

    Show Notes

(3:07) When a theater is your personal playground…  Toby shares about his early childhood and teen years.

(9:43) “It was miserable because now I didn't know where food was coming from...we budgeted ourselves one cheese sandwich a day, and we didn't have money for anything over that.”

(12:03) Gaining an understanding of how an immigrant feels…

(15:16) From banjos and soccer balls to quitting the cross country team, Toby tries to find his own identity.

(28:33) A blast from the past—Sebastian Coe and his impact…

(33:47) “It’s time to actually change.” Toby began to run.

(35:25) Negative influences were all around.

(41:30) Police motorbikes, spectators, a big win, and a Nike rep…

(48:06) A millionaire’s lifestyle without the money and a move to Sweden.

(52:00) An “Irish Leprechaun,” Noel Berkeley strikes a deal for a Swedish wife, and two friends plan to go to Kenya.

(59:43) Getting dumped, lost bags, and judging cabbies by their teeth…

(1:06:15) How a 40-minute run achieves a lifelong dream of running with Kenyans.

(1:13:18) Not being able to sleep turns into producing a bestseller.

(1:21:37) “And I'm standing next to a guy who can't even get the pair of shoes, but you know, can run ten times faster than me. So I started to think like maybe my position in life is not to be the runner that I wanted to be. Maybe I can be the person that helps you.”

(1:27:03) A picturesque run on the beach almost cost him his life.

(1:35:06) “And it was very strange because it felt like somebody was coming with a bullhorn and screaming get up, you're not supposed to end here.”

(1:41:58) A wooden bench, a Somali nurse, and no fluorescent lights… Toby’s 1st experience with an African hospital.

    (1:53:46) Brain surgery 11 days later…

(1:59:38) Running with Martha Stewart’s assistant in New York on 9/11…

(2:02:30) “And I said, I need to stop doing races, and I need to put time on this shoe program and health program.”

    (2:05:32) The problem with charities…

    (2:11:30) Empowerment, education, and health…

(2:15:02) “The best gift you can give a nation is healthy citizens.”

(2:25:03) What does Go Be More mean to Toby?

(2:29:21) “So a hundred dollars donation was what turned into a hospital that's treated over 500,000 children. So don't ever think that anything is, you know, insurmountable. It's standing up, to go be more.”

Deena Kastor Asics Ambassador talks Running and Running Shoes

Deena Kastor Asics Ambassador talks Running and Running Shoes

It is difficult to know where to start with our guest on this episode of SHOEphoria.

She honed her distance running craft as a cross country champion winning two silver medals (2002 Dublin, long race; 2003 Lausanne, long race) in the IAAF World Cross Country Championships.

She then switched focus to the marathon distance and set her best time of 2:19:36 at the 2006 London Marathon.

This time stands to this day as the American record.

She is an Olympic Bronze medallist.

She holds or has held numerous other American distance records, including the women’s road 10 mile, women’s road 15km and women’s road 8 km, and formally the women’s half marathon and women’s 10,000 metres.

Track and Field magazine named her the Best female marathon runner in the world in 2006.

Deena Kastor is quite simply one of the best female distance runners of all time, and I have been privileged to have know her for many years.

Deena has a unique insight into athletic footwear, as a long term ASICS sponsored athlete and Ambassador, a role she has performed with great distinction and grace.

In this fascinating episode of SHOEphoria, Deena shares her knowledge of what it is to be an Olympian, how much difference footwear can make to an elite athlete…and what happens when you get injured. She also shares with us the role of mental toughness for the endurance athlete, something.. she has written the book on (link below).

Dr Martyn Shorten - Pronation and Motion Control in Footwear is Pure Marketing

Dr Martyn Shorten - Pronation and Motion Control in Footwear is Pure Marketing

Part 1 of a 2 part podcast with Dr Martyn Shorten

It is not often one gets the opportunity to chat with someone who has worked with Nike Founder Phil Knight AND the legendary Nike innovator Bill Bowerman. Or for that matter with Mark Parker and Tom Clarke, both of whom started in the Nike Sports Research Laboratory and rose through the ranks to become CEO’s of the entire shebang!

My guest today on Shoephoria episode 6 is considered one of the true legends of the world of footwear and footwear biomechanics and with a career spanning 42 years, there is not a lot he has not seen or done.

    Dr. Martyn Shorten

He joined Nike the year after a young college basketballer named Michael Jordan was snapped up as an endorsed athlete by the company, a relatively new concept at the time. It is fair to say this turned out to be an Ok investment for Nike!

Martyn sharpened his teeth on the very first of the visible air shoes, natural successors to the very first Nike Air running shoe, the Tailwind.

After a very successful stint at Nike, eventually as director of the Sport Research Laboratory, Martyn moved to the global body of Puma, to take on the role as Director of Research, Design and Product Development.

Martyn is not short of an opinion, however that opinion is invariably followed by hard evidence to back it up.

He is scathing of some of the trends that have, and continue to drive the athletic footwear industry, not  the least the concept of overpronation, motion control in footwear and analysis of footwear by heel angle.

This is a fascinating and at time challenging interview, one of the best, and not to be missed.

Such is Martyn’s knowledge,  and the depth of his experience, that this is part 1 of a 2 part Shoephoria podcast. Enjoy!

Thanks you for listening to SHOEphoria Podcast and we hope you will find the time to leave a little review.

Paul Griffin & Simon Bartold - Motion Control vs Running Retail & Referring Clinicians

Paul Griffin & Simon Bartold - Motion Control vs Running Retail & Referring Clinicians

Motion control features in running shoes are a thing of the past but we can't seem to shake it in retail or clinician referrals.

Paul Griffin and Simon Bartold discuss the disconnect that exists between running shoe development and what is being advised to consumers via running retail and referring health clinicians.

We discuss some results from a recent Bartold Clinical running industry survey where 200 responders, mainly made up of referring health practitioners, told us what we already knew.... the landscape is a 'dogs breakfast'.

The message is clear, It's time to move on and talk a new evidence based language and those who do not adapt can expect to have poorer outcomes and risk losing the most valuable thing to us all, consumer and patient trust.

Education is the key and we hope to provide Bartold Clinical listeners and followers with the tools to stay on top of the latest evidence based developments from brands and segue this to retail and health clinicians.

As always, we would appreciate if you could subscribe to our SHOEphoria Podcast channel and place a review.

Jim Monahan - From Asics Corporation to 361°, A Lifetime in Athletic Footwear

https://www.bartoldclinical.com/podcasts/James Edward Monahan III (Jim) was always going to have a career based on sport. His father was a professional baseball coach, and say a bad word against his beloved NY Yankees at your peril! As it turns out, Jim Monahan has had a distinguished career in sports footwear, one that I have been privy to witness first hand.

Jim’s entry into the athletic footwear industry commenced with ASICS in the USA, and remained there for over 20 years. Starting as an underprepared tech rep at the NYC Marathon, Jim rose through the ranks to become Vice President, Footwear, ASICS America, a role he executed with distinction. Jim Monahan oversaw what can only be described as the golden era of technical brilliance from ASICS, and was a key (if not THE key) player in an exception team of individuals from around the globe that stamped ASICS as the brand of choice for athletes. During his tenure as VP footwear, Jim had a direct hand in such exceptional product as the iconic Gel Kayano, the 2000 series, the Gel Nimbus and the fabulous Gel Kinsei, to name but a few. In 2016, Jim was hand picked to head up the USA operation of the Chinese footwear giant 361 degrees, a role he holds today as President of the company. In this tour de force interview you will get a fascinating glimpse into the power years of ASICS, and the challenges of leaving a multi-billion dollar company, to establish what essentially was a start up in the USA.. and.. succeed!

Episode 4 - Dr Codi Ramsey - Do Shoes Prevent Injury?

Episode 4 - Dr Codi Ramsey - Do Shoes Prevent Injury?

Codi Ramsey is a loud and proud scientific fence sitter, and refuses to be pigeonholed into one profession or another. Although her expertise crosses sports and exercise science, biomechanics and even clinical sports medicine and physiotherapy, she identifies only as  a scientist. And this may be one reason she has been able to achieve a lot in her relatively short time since completing her PhD at the University Of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand. Her pragmatic approach to footwear science and research may also stem from her upbringing in rural Northwestern Montana, U.S.A.

Dr Ramsey has an enviable CV including a swag of publications, but her greatest passion is to explore the topic of footwear from a complex systems perspective and try to help bridge the gap between the athletes, footwear retailers, manufacturers, researchers, and governing bodies. And this, is EXACTLY what is needed in this space right now. I am sure you will enjoy this fascinating insight into how, or if athletic footwear can influence injury in runners.

Episode 3 - Jeff Dengate & The Running Landscape During and Post COVID-19

Jeff is Runner-in-Chief for Runner's World, guiding the brand's shoes and gear coverage. A true shoe dog, he's spent more than a decade testing and reviewing shoes. In 2017, he ran in 285 different pairs of shoes, including a streak of 257 days wearing a different model.

In this 30 minute podcast episode of SHOEphoria, Simon Bartold from Bartold Clinical talks with Jeff all things surrounding the current state of play with COVID-19 and its direct effect on the running industry as a whole.  We also look into how the landscape looks post COVID19.  Don't worry, we also talk about shoes!

THE RUN LAB 003 - How to Start Running

THE RUN LAB 003 - How to Start Running

In the 3rd episode of THE RUN LAB, host Brendon Ip, a Registered Physiotherapist, Gait Analyst and an avid runner himself, dives into the mindset of a runner and how to start running.

Along the way, Brendon shares some of the experiences he has had which contributed to his love of the sport and he highlights the 5 principles that help build a healthy and longterm approach to running, 1) Setting goals and defining purpose. 2) Making it EASY, 3) Enjoying the little moments, 4) Celebrating achievements and 5) Consistency.

"Learn to live for the moments – not the events and activities of your life but for the breaks in between. Learn to love the process of pushing yourself, of hearing the rhythmic pace of your feet striking the asphalt or gasping for air as you race to make a pedestrian light. Learn to love solitude and the last rays of sun as it sets behind the trees or the smile your partner gives you as you both jog along at whatever speed your legs want to. Just learn to love being in the present."

Episode 2 - Alex Hutchinson on Athletic Performance. Physiology? Shoe Tech?... or something else!??...

Episode 2 - Alex Hutchinson on Athletic Performance. Physiology? Shoe Tech?... or something else!??...

Right now we are negotiating many interesting aspects of athlete performance. Not the least of these is performance enhancement, either by drugs, blood doping  or even with the new “Super Shoes”.

We have seen stunning performances in recent times, with world records falling, and even one of the most enduring and challenging records in athletics, the sub 2 hour marathon, falling. Almost exclusively, the finger has been pointed at the shoes these athletes are wearing, especially in relation to carbon plates, construction and geometry. Are they “EPO for the feet”? Or, are they masking something else?

When we see personal best times with elites falling by many minutes, when traditionally improvement is measure in seconds, it may just be that the new shoe technology is providing a smokescreen for something a bit more sinister.

Today’s guest on Shoephoria is esteemed sports scientist and sports journalist Alex Hutchinson, and we explore these issues and others in today’s episode.

Alex is a fearless reporter on the science behind athletic performance and what it might mean. This is a must listen interview with one of the best brains in sport.

If you are interested in performance, sports footwear, and the state of play of athletics right now, you must tune in!

THE RUN LAB 002 - Shoes, Shoes, Shoes!

THE RUN LAB 002 - Shoes, Shoes, Shoes!

In the 2nd episode of THE RUN LAB, the host, Brendon Ip, a Registered Physiotherapist based in Vancouver, British Columbia gives his thoughts on the landscape of running shoes, where to start looking and shopping and the infamous minimalist shoe debate.

In this episode, we learn about the components that go into a running shoe and what makes each shoe ideal for each situation which is something every runner needs to know before they get themselves on the road.

"Because once again, we come back to the notion of improvement. And that every single time I lace up my shoes to go run, I have the chance to better myself and beat a previous time. "
