Episode 311: Don't Tell Mom "The Babysitter" is Dead

Episode 311: Don't Tell Mom "The Babysitter" is Dead

This week we watch "The Babysitter," the first installment of Netflix's Horror/Comedy film series. It's a fun ride with a great cast of young-ish actors from an array of popular franchises that deliver some funny moments while still keeping a decent amount of gore. Where the story really shines is in the exploration of the friendship between the two lead characters: the babysitter and the babysat. We pair it with  When & Where presents The Kids Are Finally Asleep. It's a 2020 Chardonnay that we found to be very light and accessible.

    Rotten Tomatoes Score: 72%

Movie Sync Notes: We watch "The Babysitter" on Netflix. We start "The Babysitter" 6:18 into the pod and push play on part two 54:40 into the pod.

    Nine Perfect Strangers

    Nine Perfect Strangers

Our resident reviewer Annabel returns in this season 3 premiere to take on the pilot of Hulu's newest Liane Moriarty adaptation 'Nine Perfect Strangers'. Starring Nicole Kidman as Russian retreat leader Masha, the show tracks nine incredibly wealthy LA residents looking to aid their first world problems at wellness centre 'Tranquilum' - a self indulgent pity party that is more insidious than it first appears. Will an all star cast, questionable accent work and exploitative, potentially drug induced hijinks be the winning recipe worthy of a glowing review? Stream now to find out.

    Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins

    Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins

Yo, Joes, we know the G.I. Joe film franchise has been on leave since 2013, but the wait is finally over. Paramount just deployed Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins, a reboot prequel centered around everyone’s favorite silent ninja, played here by a not-silent Henry Golding. Directed by Robert Schwentke (Red) with a screenplay by Evan Spiliotopoulos (Charlie’s Angels), this new origin story resets the character with his own solo feature. The cast includes Andrew Koji, Haruka Abe, Úrsula Corberó, Samara Weaving, Takehiro Hira, and Iko Uwais.

Intro Music: The main theme from G.I. Joe: The Movie, composed by Robert J. Walsh and Jon Douglas.

    Episode 32 — Mayhem

    Episode 32 — Mayhem

Horror crosses a lot of boundaries that go beyond the typical splatter fest, ghost movie or slasher extravaganza because there are a lot of films that can fall into this particular category.

Director Joe Lynch definitely agreed with that ideology when he was plotting the course for his 2017 movie “Mayhem,” which was written by Matias Caruso. Inspired by films like “Die Hard” that is the ultimate action movie, which can also sometimes pass as a Christmas favorite, Lynch decided to check off as many boxes as possible while making this particular movie.

When an outbreak occurs in an office building with a virus that essentially lowers inhibitions and dismantles morality in those infected, a mid-level attorney made out to be the fall guy in a corporate blunder decides to take matters into his own hands to get revenge on those who wronged him.

The result is a bloody, hilarious thrill ride that would definitely make John McTiernan proud.

In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to grab our nail gun and find that level 3 key card as we review the 2017 horror-comedy “Mayhem.”

What if a virus caused you to become violent and murderous?  The Crazies and Mayhem both explore this topic but in very different ways.   Knowing what we now know about how a virus can disrupt the entire world, there seems to be no more fitting horror scenario than the threat of a global pandemic potentially ending life as we know it.  We also close out the show with a fun Head2Head selecting the Best Horror Masks!

Ready or Not (2019): "A New Scream Queen Rises"

Ready or Not (2019): "A New Scream Queen Rises"

Is your family empire even a dominion if you haven’t made an actual deal with the devil? In Ready Or Not (2019), the Le Domases put the rich in ritual goat sacrifice, and Grace is about to find out just what it costs to be one of them… or, uh, not. When the mysterious Mr. Le Bail reveals she’s in for a game of hide and seek — and therefore next for the slaughter — she has to find a way to stay out of sight all night or die trying. This week’s Spooky Tuesday is a love letter to Samara Weaving’s final girl grit, her unearthly scream queen wail, and the incomparable way with words she has when delivering a string of filthy phrases.

Ready or Not (aka Furious Girl Seeking Depressed Guy) with Justina Ireland

Ready or Not (aka Furious Girl Seeking Depressed Guy) with Justina Ireland

Fear Level: Spooky (a little scary)
Trigger Warnings: Gaslighting, violence, moderate gore, demonism, rich people

    • Directors: Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett
    • Writers: Guy Busick, R. Christopher Murphy
    • Stars: Samara Weaving, Adam Brody, Mark O'Brien, Andie MacDowell

It's a Progressively Horrified All-Stars episode as both Samara Weaving (from Mayhem) and Adam Brody (from Jennifer's Body) play hide and seek with our hearts in the amazing 2019 horror comedy "Ready or Not". We are joined by horror author and all around great person Justina Ireland to discuss the most complicated contract that the demon lawyer has written up yet.

Grace (Samara Weaving) has just married in to a very rich family with a board game empire and she finds out there's just one catch: that family got all their money as part of a deal with the devil and if she wants to be part of the family, she has to play a game. When she pulls the card that says "hide and seek" it means that the rest of the members of the family have until dawn to sacrifice her. It's wild. It's funny. Hopefully you don't have a thing about trauma involving hands.

    This discussion includes some favorites:
-How does Samara Weaving make smoking look so cool.
-Adam Brody = Always Bi and always Byronic
-Andie MacDowell with a bow is some real queen shit. Can we get her a horse to ride on?
    -Rich people really are different
-Being offered something by an old woman or in a fairy tale is a lose/lose situation
-When is it acceptable to punch a child in the face?
-It's so hard to keep good help these days.
-Is furious girl / depressed guy our favorite ship type?
-What do you even call that?
-Is it just Percy and Mary Shelley? Is that ship "Shelleys"
-Is Shellies also a term for furies, but with turtles?
    -Be gay, eat people
-The vengeance of the demon lawyer
-Wait, is that Alexi's Rose's old boyfriend Art?
