An alumni's quest to keep children warm
Shirley Messaros grew up in Elyria during World War II, attending McKinley and Franklin Elementary Schools as a youngster and graduating from Elyria High School in 1954. She forged many friendships that have stood the test of time. She's been the keeper of her high school class memoirs, and continues to gather her classmates up every five years for meet ups. In 2024, the Class of 1954 will celebrate its 70th reunion! It's these fond school memories and deep friendships that's kept Shirley tied to Elyria Schools all these years. About 13 years ago Shirley started a coat collection for Elyria students. It began humbly with a small donation of coats after Shirley learned of the need while visiting a now shuttered elementary school. Shirley's coat drive has grown over the years to a collection of hundreds of brand-new coats, hats, gloves and scarves. The drive is held the first weekend of every November. Shirley's coat drive will take place Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 4 and 5, 2023, from Noon to 3 p.m., at the Elyria American Legion housed at 393 Ohio St.
Thank you, Shirley, for your deep care, concern and kindness toward Elyria's children!
It's a great day to be a Pioneer! Thanks for listening. Find Elyria Schools on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube!
#79 - The history of your favorite school supply brands from the 80s and 90s!
Thank you for tuning in! On today's show, we will be taking a look back at some of the most well-known and beloved school supply brands from the 80s and 90s including Mead, Lisa Frank, Five Star, Trapper Keeper, and JanSport. You will learn about the early days of the companies, what they are known for, and where they stand in the current school supply market. It was a really fascinating trip down memory lane and I think you will love it as much as I did!

Mind Your Business - 2023 Back 2 School Festival
The 11th annual Back 2 School Festival is coming up Saturday, August 12th, benefiting school-aged children and families in Watauga County.
On this week's Mind Your Business, we visit with members of the Back 2 School Festival organizing team to get the latest details on this year's event, including distribution schedule, details on shoes and haircuts, and how community members can support this project throughout the year.
Mind your Business is produced weekly by the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce. This podcast is made possible each week by Appalachian Commercial Real Estate and sponsored in part by Appalachian Regional Healthcare System.
14. Battle of the Brackets: Worst School Supplies
Today's episode is a very special recording of the podcast. In celebration of our summer break, I came up with a ridiculous game called "Battle of the Brackets." We pick a topic (like worst school supplies) and create a set of playoff brackets where we argue each item head to head until we've declared a winner for: The Worst School Supply Ever.
Western Conference:
1. Safety scissors vs. mechanical pencils
2. Bottle glue vs. mini pencil sharpeners
Eastern Conference:
1. Cheap crayons vs. school paper towels
2. Pens with caps vs. glitter
WINNER!
Today's entire episode is a classroom story. ;)

Teacher Potlucks: The Good, The Bad, And The Inedible
Buckle up for a wild journey through the world of "Teachers Potlucks", staff discounts, and school funding. Let's just say, things get real, real fast.
We kick off the discussion with Vinny laying down the law on when it's okay for teachers to post their wishlists online. Spoiler alert: influencers, you're not off the hook! Then Jess chimes in with her views on platforms like Donors Choose and how they aren't universally accepted.
Next, we dive into the dark depths of the school supply struggle. Vinny paints a hilariously grim picture of the quality of schoolroom supplies, with a special focus on the dreaded Chromebooks. Who would willingly choose them? No one, that's who. And we know you've all been wondering - do teacher discounts actually exist? We put this question to rest as Vinny muses on the elusive perks that aren't as publicized as we'd like.
From there, we launch into a discussion about staff potlucks. Brace yourselves, as Jess and Vinny avoid "death by crockpot" and questions of why this is considered a reward. And Vinny breaks down the school supply funding disparity in our US vs. UK segment.
It wouldn't be a Hot Mess Teacher Express episode without our Grind My Gears session. Get ready for rants about creators asking for money and the maddening phenomenon of people asking easily Google-able questions.
Lastly, we shine the spotlight on the unsung heroes in the Underdogs segment - the teachers who sign up for extra duties outside their contracts.
So, whether you're a fan of potlucks or loathe them, whether you Google every question or ask away, join us in this hilariously relatable journey through the challenges and oddities of teaching life.
Choo! Choo!

Remember Back to School?
It's late August and that can only mean one thing: Back To School! In this this special episode, Vanessa and Jonah recall their visceral memories from that time which include picking out the perfect school supplies, shopping for the previous year's hottest fashions at Marshalls, and the oh so important task of planning an outfit for the first day of school. We also get deep into our former high school's current website on our new segment "Congratulations, You Played Yourself" and make a compelling argument for why Jonah should be included in the "notable alumni" section alongside Vanessa, former HDWGW guest JD Samson (Le Tigre) and, amazingly, the original bassist for Filter who would probably tell Jonah, "Hey man, nice shot" when it comes to his chances for inclusion. We also discuss how wild it is that high school class presidents have a lifetime appointment and our dad chimes in with his own personal history when it comes to the McDonald's Snack Wrap and its enduring influence on the fast food franchise. If you DON'T listen to this episode, well, then congratulations, you played yourself (meaning you should listen).
