How to Learn Science from a 15-Ton Jello Pool with Mark Rober
Welcome to Here’s Where It Gets Interesting! To kick off our new show name, Sharon sits down with one of the most interesting people she knows: Mark Rober, a former NASA engineer who has since amassed over 22 million viewers on his YouTube channel. If there was ever an episode of Sharon Says So that will make your kids think you’re cool for listening, it’s this one. Learn about what motivates Mark to create, and how he hopes his platform will motivate others to both have fun while learning new concepts and care a little bit more about the world’s natural resources. (Pssst…Mark also dishes up some insider info on his good friend and Late Night host, Jimmy Kimmel!)

#59: 2020 Jumped the Shark But Will We Stick the Landing? (Bret Weinstein & Heather Heying DarkHorse Livestream)

In this 59th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we discuss the state of the world through an evolutionary lens. In this episode, we discuss the CDC recommendations to engage in race-based vaccine distribution, the New England Journal of Medicine jumping the shark on sex and birth certificates, and the role of markets in journalism. We also pay attention to this moment in time: Chanukah, Christmas and the solstice, plus a reading from Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. We begin the episode by making a few corrections from episode 58, on the subjects of ligands and adaptive immunity.

Butterflies Have Hearts In Their Wings. You'll Never Guess Where They Have Eyes
Adriana Briscoe, a professor of biology and ecology at UC Irvine, studies vision in butterflies. As part of her research, she's trained them to detect light of a certain color. She also explains why they bask in the sunlight, and why some of them have 'hearts' in their wings.

Plus ... you'll never guess where their photoreceptors are.

She's written about the importance of teachers and mentors in diversifying the STEM fields.
