    • Expressing gratitude to mothers and caring for the earthThis Mother's Day, express gratitude to mothers and contribute to environmental causes, as small donations can make a big impact.

This Mother's Day, we should express our gratitude to all the mothers in our lives by giving back to them. 1-800-Flowers offers various ways to celebrate with handmade bouquets, sweet treats, gourmet food, and unique gifts. For a limited time, save up to 40% on Mother's Day bestsellers at 1800flowers.com/acast. Another meaningful way to give back is by caring for the earth. Jimmy Donaldson, also known as MrBeast, and his team inspired millions to donate their "tooth fairy money" to plant trees through Team Trees. They raised $20 million in less than two months, which led to the planting of one million new trees. Similarly, they raised $30 million for Team Seas to remove 30 million pounds of trash and plastic from oceans and rivers within two months. These initiatives show that everyone can contribute to making a difference, no matter how small the donation may seem. The ultimate goal is to inspire young generations to care about the earth and create a shift in their hearts and minds, which will eventually lead to policy changes for lasting environmental benefits.

    • Two organizations, The Ocean Cleanup and Ocean Conservancy, work towards ocean preservationThe Ocean Cleanup prevents ocean pollution by intercepting plastic waste, while Ocean Conservancy focuses on beach cleanups and removing harmful fishing gear. CrunchLab, a subscription box, inspires kids to explore engineering through hands-on projects.

There are two organizations, The Ocean Cleanup and Ocean Conservancy, dedicated to preserving the environment in different ways. The Ocean Cleanup focuses on preventing ocean pollution by intercepting plastic waste in rivers, while Ocean Conservancy concentrates on beach cleanups and removing harmful fishing gear from the ocean to protect marine life, particularly large organisms like whales. Whales, the largest organisms ever existed on Earth, are gentle giants that continue to fascinate us. Another key takeaway is the introduction of CrunchLab, a subscription box designed to inspire young children to explore engineering concepts through hands-on projects. Each month, subscribers receive a new project, along with a dedicated video tutorial from Mark Rober, teaching them about the science behind the project. This innovative approach provides an engaging way for kids to learn about engineering principles while having fun building their creations.

    • A tool for kids to learn problem-solving skills and embrace failureThe Crunch Labs kit, designed by Mark Rober, is more than just a science experiment for kids. It's a tool to help them develop problem-solving skills and learn to embrace failure as part of the learning process.

The Crunch Labs kit, created by Mark Rober, is more than just a fun and engaging science experiment for kids. It's a tool designed to help children develop problem-solving skills and learn to embrace failure as part of the learning process. The kit, which sold out in less than a week and will be back in stock for the holidays, has received positive feedback from parents and encourages kids to think like engineers. The hands-on, multi-sensory experience not only provides entertainment but also subtly instills valuable life lessons. Rober's goal is to inspire kids to persist in the face of challenges and not give up easily. The kit's success demonstrates the need for more tools that encourage critical thinking and creativity in children. By making learning fun and engaging, Rober's Crunch Labs kit is an excellent example of how to foster the next generation of thinkers.

    • Considering different perspectives for a better understandingExploring various viewpoints can lead to improved understanding and challenging assumptions. Practicing empathy and active listening can enhance communication and learning from diverse perspectives.

Approaching problems from various perspectives can lead to a better understanding of the situation and potentially challenge initial assumptions. This is true in both engineering and politics. When we find ourselves becoming overly outraged about an issue or unable to understand an opposing viewpoint, it may be a sign that we're being influenced by biased information. To gain a more well-rounded perspective, it's essential to consider what a reasonable person on the other side of the issue might argue and be able to articulate their position accurately. This skill, often referred to as empathy or active listening, is not only crucial for engineers but also for anyone seeking to engage in meaningful dialogue and learn from diverse perspectives. If you're interested in helping your kids develop this skill, consider checking out Crunch Labs, where they can learn engineering concepts through engaging and accessible content. You can sign up for the waitlist on their website, crunchlabs.com. Remember, understanding others' viewpoints is a valuable tool for growth and effective communication.

Ep65: The Power of Being Seen & The Spiral Path with Amy Simpkins

Ep65: The Power of Being Seen & The Spiral Path with Amy Simpkins

I’m excited to share this episode of the Mother’s Quest Podcast with someone I deeply admire and whose recent book “Spiral: A Catalyst for Innovation and Expansion” was a revelation to me... speaker, author, thought leader, homeschooling mother, and CEO of the renewable energy start-up muGrid Analytics, Amy Simpkins.

Before a self-described identity crisis brought her to the work she’s doing today, Amy was quite literally on the path to becoming an astronaut. After pursuing a degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics from MIT and a masters in Astronautical Engineering from USC, she began a 10-year tenure as an aspiring Spacecraft Systems Architect designing, integrating, and operating spacecraft at Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company. How she determined she no longer wanted to become an astronaut and the power of being truly seen by someone else, which led to her becoming a coach, are just a few of the topics we explore during our conversation.

I first came to know Amy when I was facilitating a virtual “Power Circle” for the organization Emerging Women and Amy was a participant. Right away, I knew she was someone special, as she brought the insight of an engineer’s brain, a poet’s heart, and an alchemist’s life journey to every session.

Using her unique gifts, Amy lights the way for so many of us with how she explains and embodies the iterative spiral path to life, motherhood, and entrepreneurship. And in this conversation, as we explored her wisdom and lessons learned along all the E.P.I.C. guideposts, it felt like we revealed together the creative genius, a quality she most admired in her mother, that is also inside of her.

I left feeling more at ease than when I arrived, noticing the places and ways that I can bring more integration and awareness about the spiral processes in my life, and committed to making space, as Amy challenged me to do, to put down my phone, and sit in the pause and exploration of a question in my life, rather than rushing to a solution.

I invite you to do the same right now...to push pause, really listen to this conversation, and create space for integration, curiosity, iteration, and creativity in your E.P.I.C. life.

    Much appreciation,

    This Week’s Challenge:

For this week’s challenge, Amy challenges us to invite more space and exploration for something that we are trying to find the solution for. She encourages us to put down our phones, invite in some meditation and mystery, and allow ourselves to be in a state of pause before rushing to resolution. Amy also shared about a float therapy tank experience she has done to quiet her mind and I decided to say “yes” to trying this as well. I’ve identified one to test out not far from my house and think this may be a great way to welcome in some pause.
