Sorrow | Stored - with Paul Stephenson

Sorrow | Stored - with Paul Stephenson

Go on. Press the button. Paul Stephenson guides us through a choice of his varied, formally diverse and moving elegies in his Carcanet collection Hard Drive -- written in the years following his partner's sudden death -- and find a curiously life-affirming  exploration of grief and its aftermath.

Robin and Peter also make their way across Europe (simultaneously in both the 21st and the 19th Centuries) in the company of Janet Sutherland whose The Messenger House  (Shearsman Books) is a highly-ambitious  weaving of history, poetry and travelogue. At the border, we flag down Charlotte Gann to examine her  Cargo  -- a characteristically brilliant new pamphlet by  published by Mariscat Press.  And, tugging at the long roots of prosimetra, we find Boethius, Dante, David Jones and a 12th Century bloke called Hugh of Bologna.

Crossings | Christmas - with Jane Clarke

Crossings | Christmas - with Jane Clarke

Psssst! Here's a moment of reprieve from the festive frenzy... Follow Jane Clarke wobbling on an oak log slick with frost, then she smooths us down a butter path to a place of poetry. Here we revel in the beauty and quiet authority of Jane's collection  A Change in the Air shortlisted for the T.S.Eliot prize among others.

Peter finds listening to a Christmas carol to be a slippery slope to goblin greengrocers and secretive Christina Rossetti, while Robin rouses the old possum and revisits Journey of the Magi by T.S. Eliot. And, as if that weren't enough, we neatly put a bow in the red ribbon of the show, with Congregation, a Christmas poem from Jeremy Page

Thanks so much for listening to Planet Poetry in 2023. Merry Christmas and happy holidays everyone. Here's wishing you a Peaceful New Year!

Bridges | Broken - with Martyn Crucefix

Bridges | Broken - with Martyn Crucefix

Go on. We dare you to reach across the gulf to Planet Poetry. This time you'll find Martyn Crucefix, reading poems from his Salt collection Between A Drowning Man. This ambitious, timely work depicts  the isolation and polarisation brought about by Brexit, Populism, social media and more.  A deep and subtle work that reflects these troubled times, and yearns towards empathy.

Then let's delight in a poem from Clare Best’s new book Beyond The Gate   and gaze into the mutable future: reporting back from a first encounter with Changing by Richard Berengarten, a magnum opus inspired by a lifetime of association with the I Ching  --  the ancient Chinese text used for divination.

But there's one thing you can be 100% sure of: the usual banter from your pals Robin and Peter as they grasp another prickly poetic nettle.

    S4 Ep4: Pre-Race Pranayama - Guided Meditation

    S4 Ep4: Pre-Race Pranayama - Guided Meditation

In this episode, I take you through a breathwork practice that many athletes have said saved their race day performance. I give a few universal tips on meditation and meditative posture to assist in stillness practice.

These are a series of tried and true, time-tested, practical breath exercises to physically prep the muscles of breathing for performance, balance the nervous system, and soothe feelings of anxiety while grounding us in the present moment.

You will feel calm, connected, and powerful after practicing this meditation, which is the perfect state for walking back into your day.

S4 Ep7: Do You Want Safer Roads?

S4 Ep7: Do You Want Safer Roads?

I love riding my bike. And I am not afraid, but that is not how it's always been for me. I used to be scared, and in this episode, I share about a time when I felt fearful every time I got into the car and how I overcame that fear.

I share a technique to heal fear and to make things right because the safety we desire comes from within first. And don't be afraid to look within; we have to let the trauma shake out, and when we do this, we shift our point of attraction and take control of the energy we are living and creating from.

Be sure to stick around for the next episode, a guided meditation using this healing technique.

    S4 Ep3: Power Of Breath

    S4 Ep3: Power Of Breath

The power of breath is a remarkable and often overlooked force in our lives. Although the world of athletics is steadily discovering its power for physical and mental performance, I believe the masses are merely scratching the surface of its true power.

Each inhale fills us with life-giving oxygen, while each exhale releases not just carbon dioxide but also stress and tension. Breath is the bridge between the mind and body, capable of calming a racing heart or energizing a tired spirit.

It's the perfect tool for mindfulness, helping us stay present and find inner peace. By harnessing the simple act of breathing, we can unlock profound physical and mental benefits, making it a fundamental key to well-being and self-awareness.

And it may, as it has with others, just save your race day performance!

    S4 Ep10: Yoga Nidra - Guided Practice

    S4 Ep10: Yoga Nidra - Guided Practice

Yoga Nidra, often referred to as "yogic sleep," is a deep relaxation and meditation practice that promotes profound physical, mental, and emotional relaxation.

It's typically done in a comfortable, lying-down position, and the aim of Yoga Nidra is to reach a state of conscious awareness between wakefulness and sleep, where you can access deep inner peace, reduce stress, and unlock your subconscious potential.

It's a powerful tool for relaxation, self-discovery, and healing. Enjoy the healing benefits of this 20-minute practice.

    S4 Ep1: This Contrasting Life

    S4 Ep1: This Contrasting Life

Welcome to season four of the Awake Athlete podcast. I am thrilled to be traversing this life with you, and I am grateful for your attention as we dive into another season of mind training. This season will be more experiential as I have weaved in corresponding meditations and yoga nidra practices to assist you in deepening the messages of the episodes ahead.

In this season opener, I dive into the contrast of life, precisely the contrast of racing Ironman 70.3 Oceanside and the following Saturday sitting for an eight-hour meditation. The confirmation that I pulled away from these two very different experiences is that the inner work required to make these endeavors successful was the same.

I also share about my healing journey and what I think about my ayahuasca experience in 2010.

I go into the most advantageous time to train the mind and cultivate calm as a spacious anchor for life. I hope you enjoy this kick-off episode and that you put at least one nugget into action in your life today.

S4 Ep5: Do You Need A Mental Vacation?

S4 Ep5: Do You Need A Mental Vacation?

In the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, it's essential to remember the value of taking a mental vacation. Just as we need physical rest, our minds crave moments of escape.

A mental vacation is a planned break devoid of the distractions of everyday life. It can look many ways, but it is a powerful technique to be at your best and to know when you're at your best.

In this episode, I share a profound experience from the past when I was moving very fast from the energy of anger and how I terrified someone because of my actions. Combined with other things that I was learning at the time, this moment woke me to a commitment to slow down.

Everything uses bandwidth, even the joyful days, so mental vacations are not just for hectic times; they are for every time you remember to give to yourself.

    S4 Ep11: Never Give Up!

    S4 Ep11: Never Give Up!

Since the last time I fired up the mic, I published Awake Athlete: When Mastery Is Your Only Option, and in this episode, I let the book decide the teaching, so tune in and let's learn together.

As we dive in, we find that the work is always the same; it's zooming out and seeing that there are limitless solutions for every problem and that every turn in life gives us opportunities to grow. And that dedication trumps motivation as it lends longevity to our experiences.

The overarching message is that in a world where most will support you going back to sleep, I urge you to stay awake and lean into robust neutrality that allows for more ease in life.
